My Bargain Find
That Special Table
A Quick Stop?
We were browsing in the Hancock Fabric Store. This is a relatively new location for them and it had been awhile since I had been in the store. My Mother-In-Love was enjoying a quick turn through the store with me when she suddenly remembered that she needed some curtains. She headed in one direction and I went the other.
I love to decorate and Hancock Fabrics has some unique items. They carry lamps, pictures, table decor and small side tables for entry halls and end tables. If you are looking for an accent piece, this is the store for you. It was a great time to see what they had.
While walking the isles, I remembered my Mom's expressed wishes for a small lamp and end table in her living room. We had had several discussions on the matter and I didn't think she needed one. As I pondered the decorative items, the idea began to dawn that Mom could use a very small table and short lamp in that corner. It would quiet the intense discussions and make Mom happy. Why not? Walking down the main isles, I spotted this hand painted table in light wood. It would be perfect for Mom's place!
Studying the table intently, I opened the front drawer to find a price tag for $300.00. Gasp. I stepped back and continued down the isle to search further. I now had a mission to check out all of the tables. It turned out that there was nothing else I was interested in.
Returning to the decorative table, I studied it again. The memory of the price tag continued to sting my conscience. No way was I going to spend that kind of money on an end table. I went to find my Mother-In-Love so that she could check out my find. Of course, she loved it and thought it would be perfect for that small corner in my Mom's living room. Sigh. Maybe it will go on sale in the future? She gasped when she heard the price.
Against my better judgement, I began to entertain the idea of purchasing the pricey table. We searched for a lamp and previewed several before selecting a perfect match for Her living room! The lamp did not have a shade, but the sales clerk located one in just a matter of minutes.
With my better judgement long gone, we headed for the front counter to check out. As we joined the line, a kind lady handed me a coupon for fifty dollars off purchases over $200.00. I certainly qualified for this one.
As we approached the check out, I asked the clerk if she would approve some amount of discount because of the small spots we had noted. She paged the manager on duty who agreed to discount the table ten percent. I was feeling better about my decision as I realized that the table price would be reduced by ten percent and I had a great coupon to apply to my purchase.
The clerk began ringing up the items. My first surprise was that the lampshade quoted at over $25 was free with the lamp. The lamp rang up at half-price! As I retrieved my checkbook, she rang up the next price. "No, that can't be right", she said. The manager came over and read the numbers on the tag to her as she re-entered them. The same price appeared again. Once again, the manager rattled off the numbers on the price tag to the clerk. Once again, the same sales price appeared on the register. My Mother-in-Love dropped her jaw in amazement. The price of the table was reduced to $39.99.
With a gasp, I grinned and proclaimed the purchase a heavenly bargain. My Mom was supposed to have that table. My conscience was immediately healed as we headed out to deliver our famous purchases of the day to their rightful owner. Mom loved our find and the table fits perfectly in its corner, warming the room with its unique qualities. I think she will enjoy it for a long time! Smile.
