My Experience with Aquashield (Protex Thermal/Energy Solutions)

Updated on September 6, 2012

Aquashield are Franchises - Correction WERE Franchises as many have now liquidated!

Although Aquashield advertise as a UK national company, beware that it is actually a collection of many small franchises, each individually owned an managed. This lens is about my experience with Aquashield Glasgow North Ltd although there are four different franchises regitered with Companies House to the same address as this franchise - including Aquashield Glasgow South Ltd. All franchises seem to use shared promotiona material; flyers, folders, business cards, contracts all have one of two website addresses: www.aquashieldcoatings.com or www.aquashield.co.uk. However if you experience problems with your franchise and try to contact them via either of these websites you are likely to be told that "it was not their office who carried out your work".

Update Feb 2011 : Several if not all of these related franchises are now in liquidation, however, the same people may still be operating other different franchise names.

These people are seriously SICK!

22nd July 2011

I have had SEVERAL phonecalls from PROTEX THERMAL SOLUTIONS / PROTEX ENERGY SOLUTIONS now. The last four times I have told them that I firmly believe the company is run by the same people as Aquashield (funny, both operate from the same business address huh?). Both times the salesgirls have said "no, I don't think so". Second to last time they called, I told them outright to take my phone number off their list - guess they didn't. Last time I told the girl outright (after saying that I believe they ARE Aquashield under a new name/company no.) that I was conned by Aquashield who did a terrible job with a crap product - lets see if they call back! If they do, I may sue for harassment! Protex Thermal/Energy Solutions operate out of the exact same address at 565 Shettleston Rd, Glasgow as did Aquashield. The promotional photographs on their website are the same ones as those used by Aquashield.....they ARE Aquashield - the last phonecall I had the female canvasser pretty much admitted that they are Auashield. They called me from telphone number 0141 554 0731. Another of their numbers - from a free advertisement for job opportunities as canvassers is 07821432036. Their facebook page is rather empty at the moment, but for info, here is the link Protex

Aquashield Franchising Limited changed it's name to Thermahome Ltd around the time the franchises themselves went into liquidation so it's another company to be very wary of.

April 2011 UPDATE

New Operating Names for Aquashield

As many Aquashield franchises are now being sold on or going into liquidation, it's only right that consumers are made aware of new ventures being undertaken by these greedy, unscrupulous people. These include to the best of my knowledge: FreeElectricity4U, PV Solar, Protex Thermal coatings/Solutions and Roofstyles. Please be very careful and do your homework if you are planning to get quotes from any of these firms!! If you have elderly relatives that may be susceptible to the tactics of the unethical sales teams, please warn them!!

Hiring Aquashield

In the middle of October 2009 when a representative of Aquashield knocked on my door I agreed to an appointment with a salesperson to give me a quote for repairing and recoating my roof. I had known for a while that the roof was in a terrible state with several missing tiles and with winter fast approaching I knew that I had to bite the bullet and pay someone to fix it. I was also hoping t sell my house before summer 2010 and so a 'new' roof seemed like a good selling point.

The salesman came (the Sales Manager Iain Davidson no less), gave me the speil and his quote, telling me about the benefits of the coating and how it would increase the value of my house by 8%. It seemed fairly reasonable when he added that he would give me an "advertising discount" if I would agree to have an Aquashield board placed in my garden for one month after the work was completed. I accepted the offer and signed the contract; though I declined hid offer to fraudulently complete a credit agreement whereby payment would be deferred for a year - I was unemployed due to ill health and he offered to complete the credit agreement paperwork with my former employer's details as though I was still working there. Nice to know that you have absolutely no morals Mr Davidson.

Shoddy Workmanship

Around 10 days after signing the contract an Aquashield "Surveyor" Joseph Bradley arrived to measure up my house. That took less than 2 minutes as all he did was run an old style tape measure from one side of my house to the other. When I asked if he needed to go around the rear of the property he said "no" and that was it, he left. The following week workmen arrived to begin the work; pressure washing my roof to remove any dirt and moss, and replacing missing and damaged tiles. That seemed to go okay and I was told that they would return "on a dry day" to complete the work. The next day however I noticed that they hadn't cleaned all of my roof; I live in a mid-terraced property and at the front of my house, to one side they had missed a strip from the ridge tiles right down to the guttering, about 18-24 inches wide. I called the office and was told that the workmen would return to assess the problem. Eventually they arrived and straight away said that they couls see what the problem was. The house to my left is a council-owned property and when council workmen had painted the guttering on my neighbour's property, they had inadvertently overlapped 18-24 inches onto my property. When Aquashield washed my roof, they used the painted guttering as a guidline for where to stop. The workmed tried to tell me that it "would look stupid" if they coated that strip of roof because the guttering was a different colour to my own and that it would be better to leave it as was! I pointed out that the strip of roof was mine, it belonged to my property, it was my house below that piece of roof and I was paying to have it washed, treated and coated. They agreed to wash the missed section when they returned to complete the work.

Another week passed before they returned, but true to their word they washed and coated the section of roof they had missed first time around. I inspected the work and pointed out a couple of broken tiles they had failed to replace, refusing to pay until it was done. I was told that they had no more tiles in the van but after a phonecall to the office I was told tha they would return the next day with replacement tiles.

The next day I had two job interviews and although I wasn't overly happy paying the company without being there myself to inspect the work, with the pressure of the interviews I rather stupidly left a cheque for payment with my neighbour and asked her to pass it on to the workmen if they should arrive while I was out. When I arrived home, my neighbour greeted me and confirmed that the workmen had indeed been. I checked my roof and the broken tiles had been replaced.

The next day my sister came over to visit. Although it was raining very slightly, I took her outside to have a look at my 'new roof'. You can imagine how shocked I was to see that, just two days after the coating was applied, it had almost completely washed off of the section the workmen had failed to wash when they came initially. I telephoned the Aquashield office straight away and was told that someone would call me back. After waiting several hours, and being that it was a Friday afternoon close to 5 O'clock, I called back myself to ensure that I got to speak to someone and voice my complaint before the weekend. Finally I was told that the workmen would be sent to assess the problem. Over the next several days I took photographs of my roof - putting the photos onto my laptop revealed more areas where the coating had been missed, was patchy or was wahing off and it was getting worse each time that it rained.

Getting Repairs Done

It took several phonecalls to Aquashield, asking to speak to managers, waiting for callbacks, and around two weeks waiting before any workmen came back to rectify the problems with my roof. I had expressed my dissatisfaction with the original workmen and so they sent a different team. Since having taken photographs of my roof I noted several more broken tiles and was told that these would be replaced. I had also requested that my roof be re-washed to remove any loose paint coating prior to the new work being done but was told that this wasn't necessary. So the new workmen spent less than one hour re-spraying my roof and allowed me to inspect it before leaving - all looked good. The next day however it rained and once again, the paint began washing off. After several more phonecalls to Aquashield and recorded delivery letters to the Managing Director, I was told mid-December that they were waiting for "several dry days" before sending anyone back out. A week before Christmas, I noticed that the workmen were at a neighbour's house cleaning the roof. I wewnt to speak to them and again was told that they were waiting for several conscutive dry days before coming back to work on my roof. Later I spoke to the neighbour and warned her of the problems I had had. I also found out that she had been given the same advertising discount that I had been given - despite Aquashield's claim that only one house per neighbourhood can receive this - so it's simply a sales ploy designed to make potential customers believe they are getting a good deal.

Sometime during the second week of January 2010 Aquashield came and completed work on my neighbour's house - I wasn't home at the time otherwise I would have enquired as to why they could do that roof with the current weather conditions yet they couldn't complete my work. The weather has been up and down temperature wise but has been dry most days since January so when I called Aquashield on Monday 15th March 2010 I made sure that I pointed that out. I asked to speak to the Remedials Manager but was told that he was not in the office and he would call me back (still waiting for that 2 days later). I asked the girl I spoke to (Deyna) why my roof had not yet been fixed and was informed that it "was down for March) when I pointed out that we are already mid-way through March, I was told they were waiting for warmer weather (there had been snow on the ground when the company worked on my neighbour's roof - although I was cut off before I could point that out).

Signed Contract October 2009

still waiting for repairs March 2010

Be very cautious if you are considering hiring any of the Aquashield franchises to do work for you. Consider hiring a private roofing firm who will likely be considerably cheaper and only perform treatment to your roof under optimal conditions. Aquashield rely on branding, private contractors rely on reputaion so they care more about the quality of their work.

Since signing the contract with Aquashield, I discovered that they were on the television programme "Rogue Traders" and that the expert opinion was that you would be as well to paint your roof with reqular masonry paint as have Aquashield coat your roof, for all the good it does.

May 2010 ...... still waiting

Despite telling me that my 'job' was on the books for repairs to be done in March, nothing happened. The Remedials Manager did not return my phonecall as I was told would happen. I used an online form to contact The Judge from the Sunday Mail Newspaper, and almost 3 weeks ago got a letter back saying that he had contacted Aquashield - still nothing. The hand-painted sign "Aquashield bodged my roof" shown a little way up the page, is on A1 paper, that's pretty big; it actually takes up the whole of the rear windscreen of my car as I drive around, and it's a permanent fixture in my car until Aquashield return to fix my roof. They have one more week to comply with The Judge from the Sunday Mail, if they do not then I have to contact him again. I will also be getting a quote from a local builder for repairs which I will be including in a case in the small claims court.

Please feel free to leave your comments, be sure to mention how long you have been waiting for repairs and which Aquashield franchise did your work.

June 2010

Four weeks after contacting the Sunday Mail, when I hadn't heard anything from Aquashield, I contacted "The Judge" again, and again he/they wrote to Aquashield, telling me this time to give them 3 weeks to get in touch. Well, three and a half weeks later, I got a letter from Aquashield Thermal Coatings Ltd telling me that they had been made aware of my complaint (as if this was something new to them and not something I'd been telling them for 8 months!). The letter stated that I would be contacted within 28 days to arrange a date to start the work. The letter was signed by someone with the same name as the girl whom I have spoken to on the telephone over a dozen times, coincidence? Later the same day, an Aquashield workman turned up at my house to redo my roof. Again, when they finished, I inspected the work and all looked okay, though I pointed out that it had looked okay the last twice it had been done. That was today so I shall be keeping a close eye on my roof over the next few days/weeks to see what happens the first time it rains. Wish me luck, I need it! As I said to the workman, hopefully it's third time lucky (but I still think their product is a load of rubbish).

January 2011

So, the coating is still on my roof - Great!!! BUT, we had heavy snow December/January and a couple of tiles have come off my roof; broken tiles that have clean breaks, most likely snapped when the workmen walked along the roof but only dislodged by the weight of the snow or the high winds we had a few weeks ago. Again, this is one of the major reasons legitimate tradesmen say they don't like to treat my type of roof tile. So if you have ROSEMARY tiles then beware. I highly doubt that my "guarantee" will cover broken tiles and I have no way to prove how/why they broke. Sadly I noticed 3 neighbours in a nearby street are also having their roofs cleaned in preparation for coating though I didn't manage to see whether it was Aquashield or the new company going around that uses a very dodgy looking Disney's Donald Duck design on their vans.

February 2011

So, I just had yet ANOTHER Aquashield canvasser at my door - some of the local franchises may have gone into liquidation but others are clearly still very much active in my area.

let's put a stop to companies like these!

I put together an ePetition on the new, Government run website calling for changes to be made to who/how limited liability companies are formed - hopefully it will gain enough signatures to be debated in the House of Commons. It's too easy and all too common for companies to liquidate in this way, only to reappear under a different name and with no liability.

We signed up for Aquashield in October 2009 and have had problems ever since. The property was left in a filthy state, broken tiles not repaired and our roof is still leaking. We have made several phone calls and written several letters - still waiting ........

@anonymous: oh dear!! Maybe you could try contacting trading standards for advice? The work MAY go okay, but I'd read the fine print of the credit agreement too incase the finance company can back you up in the event of problems. If they do go ahead with the work, make sure that they let your roof dry FULLY after washing it before they move on to the next stage.

@anonymous: Dont do it, just had a saleswomen round and she would not go without a yes. She was pushy and was not happy with a maybe. Trust me her sales technique was s**t. It annoys me because i bet that companies like this pressure elderly people into buying. Its wrong. Trust me, she gave me dirty looks when i said to her i will think about it because it's a lot of money and plus i would have to ask the neighbours first about their opinion (its a semi-detached) hence as we are neighbours and get on well, its only right they have a say. She said 'whats it got to do with them', hehe oh and gave me another dirty look. When i told her i felt like all she wanted was a yes, and didn't like her approach, she gave me a sob story about her boss penalises her because the boys do better than her in selling. HAHA!! Well luv.. you don't do it like that. HONESTLY DON'T BUY OFF THEM, SOUNDS REALLY DODGY! Companies like this need stopping. Sorry to those who have had bad experiences..

I am roofer based in Southern U.K. I have been removing moss from roofs (as well as other roofing jobs) for the past ten years. I always advise my customers against applying any coats of paint or sealants to the tiles as it is totally unneeded and an utter waste of money. Paint does not stop roof leaks, replacing the broken tiles that cause leaks does (and its cheaper). Contrary to the claims on the Aquashield website, painting your roof will not improve the "thermal efficiency" of your home (perhaps as much as painting your ceiling?) Neither will it extend the life of your roof, it's paint, nothing more and nothing less. Just paint. Please don't expect the roof to look good in 5 - 10 years. There is a property near to where I live that was coated in 2006 and it looks dreadful with patches of washed out paint in several places. I have seen many like this, as I just wrote, it's paint... so it will wear off with heavy rainfall. Yes Aquashield have appeared on BBC's Rogue Traders program, they were heavily criticized for the hard sell, OTT prices and the dubious claims that their salesman made to the homeowner. If anyone is concerned about the condition of their roof, then my advice is to contact three reputable roofing firms and ask them to have a look and supply you with a written quote to replace any broken tiles, re-point loose mortar and clear out your gutters. Moss can (if you wish) be removed with a trowel and a fungicide can be applied to prevent early re-growth, its a cheap and effective way to control moss growth, no need for paint/sealants which are just a rip off gimmick.

Sorry to hear you have fallen victim to these sharks, For what its worth I wouldn't let them near the roof again, instead I would get an independent surveyor to supply a report on the entire job then I would take legal action - those photos you have taken are very damning and you have been extremely patient, they however are taking the piss out of you.

I applaud you for detailed article, lets hope lots of would be customers get to see it.

      hi there,

I have been having the same trouble wit yourself, my roof was done in october. when the job was done i had patches all over my roof plus my next door neigbours new windows were covered in paint. so i called and voiced my complaint and they said they would send someone out to fix the roof and put another coating on. just to say they never came out. the problem with this company is that they are full of broken promises and crap communication. so now were on june......roof still not fixed. i had them out today and they said that my roof was too wet to work on which i understand, but they never knew about the complaints about the windws and they wer to get covered up this time and never brought anything with them. i was told i need to wait another week becaue they are very busy. also the fact is we are tring to sell the house and they have devaluated the rice of my house as it stannds which doesn't seem to bother them. do u think i have a legal right?? or wait till friday and just get it done and just pay them for the crappy job?

@anonymous: If I were you (sounds like you may not have made the final payment to them??) I'd call trading standards - you'll be able to get your local office's phone number here: http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk

I'd say that until you are SATISFIED with their work you don't need to pay them. If you really don't want them to finish the work you can send a recorded delivery letter saying that you have given ample opportunity to rectify the problems but have now lost faith in the company. You'd need to take them to a small claims court for a refund (if my coating washes off again then that's the route I'll be taking).

I have had my roof done with aquashield. And done is the right word. it started in Feb 2010. Hard saleman, poor workman ship took about 4 months as they had to keep coming back to re-do there work, and now I find out it will not make any diffrence in my heating bill. I wouldn't tell anyone to use them.

      @anonymous: Hi Laura

My mother was silly enough to sign a contract to have this coating applied and hid the fact she had been conned by a pushy salesman st her home. Mum had only paid a £500 deposit for a £2500 job. I contacted trading standard and they confirmed that the terms and conditions on the contract mum signed breached the 2008 selling from a customers home or workplace act and the contract was basically illegal and therefore couldn't be enforced. I told them to whisle for the rest of the money which they turned aggressive about and police had to be called. Anyone who has signed a contract but wished to get out of it, check your terms and conditions against this policy and you may be able to walk away. It clearly states that the company can be fined for using out of date terms and conditions, hope this helps

Mum signed a pink contarct with the terms and conditions on the back but they are illegal if you check it against this act. Mum walked away from the contract and I told them to whistle for the money

I very nearly signed a contract this week but changed my mind. Thank goodness I did! I wish I'd researched and found these comments earlier. Since I cancelled I have been inundated with phone calls which I have not answered. I did, however, answer one this morning and got bombarded with reasons why I should go ahead and how I could finance it. When I still said no the girl simply put the phone down on me!!

It is about time trading standards closed this company down!!

@anonymous: Thanks for adding to the comments Irishhils.

I actually had yet ANOTHER door to door canvasser from Aquashield at my door last week asking if I wanted a quote to have my walls done. I told the gentleman that I had requested that Aquashield don't send any canvassers to my door again, but that the message was never passed on to the canvassing teams. He gave me an interesting bit of info: Aquashield are *considering* not doing Rosemary Tiles any more as this is the type of tile where they have the most problems. MANY, MANY council properties in the UK at one time were tiled with Rosemary tiles and MANY of these homes are now privately owned. It will cut Aquashield's potential client base drastically if the stop treating Rosemary tiles, but to me that would simply mean fewer homeowners get fleeced!!

      Hi every one

, well am glad am not the only one who has had crap work done by the so called Aqua shield.

We have had nothing but trouble, we have had them out three times, from signing the contract in January 2010, up to date, August the 29th 2010, our roof is defaced because , of the crap coating that was painted on our roof, we didn't actually get the work started until march 2010, as the weather was bad in the beginning of 2010 we live in South Shields Tyne and Wear, we have taken pictures of our roof, and forward them on to Aqua shield and head office and the finance company. They coated our roof with a product that peeled off after just few days, and they painted over moss, dirt, and damaged tiles, they replaced only 9 tiles, we later learned that they had actually missed 19 tiles.

We have had them out so far 3 times and have now told them we do not want them out again, missed appointments, cancelled ones as well by them, and promising to phone us and them not bothering.

We are refusing to pay, as the product peeled off, and the ridge of the roof, had cement coming away and falling on to our patio, back and front. The company have lied to their finance company by saying, we were the ones refusing them access, we have taken some interesting pictures of the shabby work provided by Aqua shield, our roof looks as if it has bad case of peeling sunburn.

They wanted us to pay £3000, and we have said we are going to expose the company to watch dog and the papers, they have offered us a discount of £1461, to to settle the complaint, if that's not t more or less admitting that they have damaged our roof then I don't know what is. We are refusing to pay a penny, and am willing to go to court if need be, we saw customers views on Aqua shield and have printed them off to send to Aqua shield, to show what other people have had to say about them and the poor quality and poor customer service they have provided to other people.

They have blamed the fact that they haven't turned up on couple of occasions to rectify the problems, and believe me there's been lots.

This company needs bringing down to their knees, as they have the dam cheek, to charge a ridiculous amount of money, and apply and expect people to pay a fortune for a product that's faulty, that' what we got told. and doesn't do what they say it does, and show every one a video of a house that's looks lovely, well our house doesn't look nothing like the house in the film, far from it. We got told that the paint was faulty and now apply an undercoat in white before they actually paint the roof, when they came out to point the roof and the ridge of the roof, and paint it, they painted on top of moss, and dirt, they came out a second time, to re wash the roof, as the paint was peeling in chunks, and had bits of broken tile and pieces of concrete falling on to our patio, we thought that the gutters was blocked at first, we contacted trading standards and explained the problems we were having with Aqua shield, they asked why we keep believing them every time they say they will do it properly time after time.

We have refused to let them come out a 4Th time as we have been put through so much stress and am sick and tired of sweeping up bits and pieces off the patio, we are now in August and am still sweeping up pieces from our garden.

PLEASE DO NOT LET AQUA SHIELD NEAR YOUR ROOF AND THERE'S NO DISCOUNT FOR YOU IF YOU DISPLAY THEIR BOARD IN YOUR GARDEN IT'S A SALES TACTIC

Just about to send a letter off to them on after speaking to Consumer Direct. We had the work done last December and despite thecoating coming off within days they eventually turned up a fortnight ago (after many attempts to get myself or my wife to sign that we were happy) then said they couldn't do anything because it was too windy. No word to say they were coming. They just turned up when we were at work and spoke to my son.

Then they turned up last Friday (again unannounced) while we were at work and started to do something. Then one of the workmen answered his mobile phone while on the roof and fell off, breaking his leg. If it hadn't been for concerned neighbours and a note from the police put through the door we wouldn't have had a scooby as to why half the guttering was in the back garden and red paint was covering various parts of our wall.

Have we heard anything from Aquashield? Hell no.

We took the finance option of 12 months interest free as we had been hoping to sell the house in the interim and pay for it with the proceeds. However I'm sure that the 12 months only startsonce we sign that we're happy with the work. Does anyone know if my assumption is correct?

@Growl3th: I'm not sure about that. If I were you I would contact the finance company directly. I would also check with your bank if you set up a direct-debit mandate to pay it and possibly cancel that for now until the work is completed. I only got any success with the company after repeatedly having 'The Judge' from The Sundal Mail Newspaper contact them on my behalf so that is an option you could try - I'm wondering if AS intend to repair your guttering and fix the mess made on your wall, and thinking probably not unless you MAKE them fix it.

@ArtformTheHeart: Going to look at the contract tonight to see if I can figure that out.

The letter I'm sending them today states that we want the guttering repaired and the roof work done correctly within the next 14 days under the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 and Common Law Scotland. Once those 14 days have passed, according to Consumer Direct, we can walk away from the contract and request compensation for the damage caused and for the shoddy workmanship.

@Growl3th: I also got advice from consumer direct/trading standards and sent formal letters recorded delivery, but it didn't do me any good. I live alone and am quite a nervous person so really couldn't push the point on my own. I do hope that this letter has the desired reslut for you - and I'm very glad to hear you took the finance as it may help your case - they already had my money and had no intention of doing a thing for me until the intervention of "The Judge". Best of luck, please do come back and leave a message saying if/how you managed to get a resolution - it may help others in the future.

@anonymous: Unfortunately we hadn't read these comments before the sales rep called but we did, thankfully, change our mind and cancelled within 3 days of signing. However, six weeks later we are still trying to get our deposit back. We haven't given up yet.

We've been told on each weekly phone call that Jacqueline is waiting for the Managing Director to come in with the cheque book and sign a cheque. Most national companies would have cheques computer produced or cheque books held by an accounts department. It would then take just seconds for the signatory to sign. The refund has been authorised twice by branches: in the early weeks by the now apparently defunct Stevenage office and again on 24.08.10 by the Essex office. Thank goodness we changed our minds.

@Growl3th: hi growl3th, we hired aqs back in oct 2009, all that's been done is the roof washed, after endless canceled appointmets (due 2 th weather ect) phone calls and letters. we were under the assumtion the payments were 12 months free AFTER the work was complete and we were satisfied., but thisis not the case, its 12 months from when u sign the loan agreement, we are ment to start paying next month for a job that has not been done. Im thinking of canceling it altogether now with the finace company,as it states on the loan agreement, IF YOU RECEIVED UNSATISFACTORY GOODS OR SERVICE PAID FOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT YOU MAY HAVE THE RIGHT TO SUE THE SUPPLIER, THE CREDITOR OR BOTH. as aqs were paid in nov 2009 for a job not done and all the bad reviews id rather have a new roof.

I too have had the veryunfortunate experience of Aquashield roofing, they left a mess, cleaned, left another mess, missed Tiles that were broken, after four visits, still have a hole in roof I can see daylight through. unfortunately i did not discover the hole or should i say holes ( there may be more!) until after i signed to say job done. Now i am on to finance company and then Trading standards. BE WARNED STAY CLEAR.....

@Growl3th: check your finance agreement but the finance will only pay out to aquashield once you sign the satisfaction note that the fitter asks you to sign on completion of works do not sign if unhappy and notify the finance company in the first instance this will ensure aquashield to compete works to your satisfaction.

aquashield, what a joke i have read ur comments and different problems n they all boil down to bad management the owners/directors only focus on their own earnings n sales from hard working class people, they use the franchise as a way of passing the buck basically there is various companies linked to two sole directors who focus on sales rather than good workmanship. contact finance company in first instance as they will only pay out to aquashield once you as the customer is happy, if you have already paid take them in full consult the judge as they are a company who think they can get away with anything they like and believe me when i say this company is run by two persons who think they can talk or buy there way out of anything however the bad publicity is hitting them hard they are now starting to struggle in with us as genuine people looking to upgrade our properties these people think they can take us for a ride an have us paying for there lavish life style in balmore outside glasgow

@ArtformTheHeart: Got a call from AS on Thursday saying that they will be coming today to re-coat the roof and afterwards replace the guttering (part of our letter insisted that they inform us when they were going to visit). So now I'm sitting waiting to see what happens.

I certainly won't be signing any satisfaction form today waiting at least a week to see if it comes off again. Plus my little brother (building inspector up north) is down visiting the family for the weekend so I'll get him to have a look at it as well.

      Will keep you informed.

Phoned three times today to be told that the site manager would call me back to explain. Still waiting.

Was interesting though when I first called and was asked if it was a new installation. Said "No it was a botched job from December." "Oh was that last year?" Looks like these things take a while to fix.

I too have had dealings with the awful Aquashield and dealt with the Liverpool depot.

Their representative called at my home in September 2008 and led me to believe that there were various things wrong with my roof that could be put right if I allowed them to treat it with their "wonderful" coating. It was very expensive at £3,150, especially as I am retired and on a very small fixed income, but their representative went on and on about it and in the end I signed the contract agreeing for them to do this.

In October of 2008 they came out and washed my roof in readiness for the coating. When they left we noticed that they had blown 9 holes in our plastic carport roof with their power washer. We phoned them to inform them of this damage and were told that someone would ring us back, they did not. Between October 2008 and January 2009 we phoned them endlessly and also wrote to them. We were fobbed off, spoken to rudely or generally just ignored.

On the rare occasion that we actually managed to speak to anyone in authority we were promised several times that they would come out and look at the damage and several appointments were arranged. They never turned up to any of these appointments and we were left to sit in waiting for them.

We repeatedly told them that we no longer wished for them to coat our roof and would pay them just for washing the roof but we were told that we had signed a contact and had no choice in the matter. On one occasion their Project Manager at Liverpool told me that we had signed a contract and they would be coming to do the work âwhether we liked it or notâ. We felt intimidated and bullied.

Finally after countless calls and several letters they came to coat the roof (whether we liked it or not) on January 26th 2009. They also told us that they would replace the carport they had damaged at the same time. After this work had been done they left a dreadful mess with the roof coating they had used all over our front door and windows. They also broke our hose pipe and when we asked someone to look at the new carport roof we discovered that it was just a botched job and they hadn't even used the correct materials. We made further countless phone calls and wrote letters of complaint.

After several months of being largely ignored some of their staff turned up in May 2009 and actually told us that the roof had not been coated correctly and they would have to do it again. We were beginning to think this nightmare would never end. We were told that they would return and redo the roof but since then we have heard nothing. I have made countless phone calls, only to be fobbed off or told the person I need is not in and will call me back but they never do. I have written many times to the depot that did the work and also to their Head Office in Glasgow but have had no reply.

I have since been told that this company may have featured on BBC1's Rogue Traders last year and I am contacting the BBC to see if they can assist me.I have also reported them to Trading Standards who have attempted to speak to the company about this but at the date of writing this are being thoroughly ignored by Aquashield. We all know what that is like. Interestingly, shortly after I reported this company to Trading Standards they turned up at my property with no notice at all and tried to intimidate me into having the roof redone. I managed to get them to leave the property when I told them that nothing would induce me allow them to touch my house again and give them an opportunity to do more damage

I noticed that several of the comments on here mentioned that one of the newspapers tried to help and I'd be grateful if you could let me know which paper it was in case they are able to help me. I have spoken to Penman and Somerlad of the Daily Mirror regarding this company and would urge other people with complaints to contact them. If they receive enough information about this company it might interest them enough to run an exposure on Aquashield in the Thursday Sorted Column of the Daily Mirror.

Can I also ask that people add comments on Blagger.com under the Aquashield listing that I have added. The more people that know about this dreadful, unprofessional company the better.

      @Growl3th: Ok a further update.

Got a text on Tuesday from my son to say that there were roofers at home. Phoned AS to speak to the Mysterious "Jim" who was to call me back on Monday but never did. Spoke to a different receptionist who told me that Jim had been informed and that the team were at my house today. "Yes i know that!! But we asked to be informed when they were coming so that I could be there." "I'll get Jim to call you." 3 calls to get to this stage.

Got home and what we were presented with a nightmare! the front facing roof is two tone. There are still cracked tiles front and back. the tiles that the roofer took out when falling off and taking the guttering with him are green (our roof is reddy/orange). the guttering will be "sorted at the end of the week" the roofer said to my son.

Phoned AS this morning and asked for jim. He was on the road in Ayrshire. Finally spoke to another installation manager who said he would arrange to get the "boys" out on Thursday as it was forecast to be fair. I said no since I wanted to be there to make sure and saturday was the first day I was off work. He said he would have to try to arrange that so would call me back.

Not holding breath at this point.

Lo and behold he phoned back. Said the guys would come out on Saturday sometime after 9:30. By this time I was not inclined to agree and told him to cancel while I took advice. He protested so I agreed to them coming subject to me phoning to cancel on friday after I've contacted Consumer Direct.

Fortunately i have photos of the mess that we came back to on Tuesday.

To think we agreed to this to help us sell the house. Anyone looking at the roof now would run a mile.

We have taken Aquashield to the small claims court and won. They have been ordered to pay us £1685.00. They have ignored us, and the court. No payment has been forthcoming. We are now consulting solicitors in Scotland to send bailiffs to their head office. Rubbish firm, rubbish workmanship. We wish we had never heard of them..

Had a Aquashield sales man round today and he was so aggressive i thought he was going to slot me. No amount of asking him to leave worked, eventually he screamed like a hiena and tried to frighten me in to closing my door agressively charged up and down my garden path. I called his bluff and acted the hard man myself he quietend down and left but came back with 3 other guys and beckend me to come out on the street. By then the police were already on there way but arrived too late as the sales men left again soon after.

Aqualise manager GARY CAMPBELL defended his sales men and said he would call back as soon as he had spoke to his team. He has not called back.

The sales man who came to my house i would describe him as looking like a junkie and acting like he had just taken something.

Well done Aquashield. Hopefully they will leave my street alone as they are here every few months, i fear they will soon be back.

I had the same deal and introudction to Aquashield as everyone else mentioned here i.e. the discount. They did my roof in March 2010 and by August 2010 my roof was leaking into the bedroom very badly. I called Aquashield and they sent to guys round to look at it. In their words it was the worst job they had ever seen. Tiles were broken and just coated over, there was no re-pointing and only one coat instead of two had been applied. I was then told the office (Tamworth) that did my job had closed down but don't worry as I had a ten year guarantee. Its not worth the paper its written on. After three months of making constant phone calls, emails, letters I have still not had my roof fixed. I have been given at least six appointments when they would be round to do it but surprise surprise they didn't turn up because it was raining, too windy, too cold, etc. I even spoke to Trading Standards and was guided by them sending a recorded 14 day letter but as usual they irgnored it. I finally spoke to head office over the last month as I was getting nowhere with the Stone olffice which had taken over my area and they assured me the work would be done and that a cheque would be sent within a week for the repairs to my bedroom. Again after numerous phone calls asking where the cheque was I finally had a call and was told the company had gone into liquidation and I would not be getting any work done nor payment for the damage repairs that they had caused. I have had no problems with my roof for over 25 years that I have been in this house and after six months of Aquashield doing work its leaking. This company should be avoided at all costs and if anyone has a guarantee for work done by the Tamworth office its not worth a thing. My argument is the guarantee just says AQUASHIELD and assumed the company as a whole would be responsible for the guarantee but no it seems each individual franchise is responsible for their own work. How many more of these companies will be closing and people left with shoddy workmanship problems and not even able to claim off their building insurance because of it. I think this company should be investigated fully and people warned of the likely problems they could have. At the moment I am too sickened to do anything more after battling for three months but maybe when I have collected my thoughts I will contact Rogue Traders because that's what they are.

@anonymous: hi we had asked aquashield to paint our house but after speaking to an architect was advised not to go ahead with this at that time, we sent them notice to cancel the job and told them we be going away next week on holiday, but while away they turned up and painted the house, they never jet washed it and painted in extremely wet weather, now the paint is peeling off in various areas, they have been back three times to fix problem but still peeling off drainpipes which were not meant to be painted in first place, and all window sills. just wondered if any advice what do next, i wrote to them in november explaining all the problems but had no response from them as yet.

I had the work done in 2008 and paid in fully 2009, the same month I paid them I phoned them to tell them that the colour was coming off and the grouting was falling out, it took them 7 months to come back after dozens of phone calls and letter writing, eventually contacting the Glasgow branch, Have tried ringing them again though because I have noticed the colour coming off again, guess I now know why they arnt answering the phones. I am so angry with myself for being tricked into parting with my money.

My parents in Stirling have had the Aquashield treatment - a DISASTER! The roof leaked badly afterwards and the inside ceiling collapsed two months ago, causing chaos. Aquashield's 10-year guarantee isn't worth its name. The staff seem to be incompetent or crooked. The Operations Manager, a Mr McCracken, never returns calls, is always in a meeting, on the phone or out of the office. His superior, a Mr John Gorman, has the same meeting-itis illness and lacks the courtesy to contact customers. There are no direct contact details to anyone in charge, just to the telephonists who promise to get their boss to phone back. Telephonists Anne-Marie and Julie are either scared of losing their jobs or are as incompetent as their bosses. They're very 'nice' until you start to make demands - then they're rude.

NEVER, EVER use them on your roof. If your roof needs looked at, get a local company to do it. Forget painting on any kind of extra substance. It's a sure-fire way of losing your money.

At the moment, we're still struggling with them. Wish us luck!

Called Head Office this morning and both girls i spoke to were very pleasant. Mrs V Happy, while you may be happy with your roof there are clearly some unhappy people out there, I couldn't see a problem with there workmanship either and was happy with there work, unfortunately after a few months that wasn't the case as i had leaks in my roof, so while your opinion is welcome and I am sure there are happy customers out there, calling other peoples experience rubbish is uncalled for, they are merely stating there experience with aquashielf the same as you have yours.

Although some may question do you work for the company as you seem to be on the defensive?

@anonymous: Obviously from my photographs this is not rubbish. I could also publish photographs of houses in my town that have been treated by Aquashield and then 1-2 years later have moss covering their entire roof. Nor is it rubbish that the sales manager encouraged me to commit fraud on the credit agreement. How about the "Showhouse Discount" (one per area) that both my neighbour and myself apparently received??? And I also believe that if BBC television's 'Rogue Traders' show tells me that the Aquashield coating is useless, that they are telling the truth. The company is not well established - they have gone into bankruptcy in several of the franchises and re-opened new franchises so that they do not have to deal with customers ongoing complaints. ANd of course there is the fact that I have had 3 quotes from established, reputable private contractors, all of whom were at least £500 cheaper than what I paid to Aquashield. Maybe Mrs V Happy is one of the lucky ones, maybe she will not be so happy after the first heavy rain or maybe she's an Aquashield employee?

Does anyone have any more information as to their whereabouts please ??

Waited all day for roofers to arrive (mug) but this is the first trouble I've had in 3 years since the roof was done, got a feelin' I'm in for a kick in the n*ts, as we all are. Aquashield was run by Managing director Rob Skillen and associate Dug Wilkie. Managed to obtain their mobile numbers and they were very helpful. The company (Aquashield) was sold to Mr Tommy Dean and Mr John Gorman in 2009/10 who are running another company which we will chase up and post info.

Ever customer apparently should have received an I.W.A (INDEPENDENT WARRANTY ASSOCIATION) guarantee, hmmmm ! don't remember getting that, which is supposed to protect deposits and 10yr guarantees.......Good luck to all (suckers, including me)

i think i was the only tradesman that worked for aquashield.what can be done for all the elderly folk who ain't got Internet access or are to ill to get out or have no one to help.its a disgrace cos if they didn't receive a guarantee they ain't got a leg to stand on or the eyes to look into it cos they were taken out the day the sales rep turned up.in the tees side area there is a new firm same people under the name of ROOFSTYLES the sales manager(NAS YAKUZA) from aquashield has set this up taking all aquashield staff with him.yes the people who pray on the elderly people such as SIMON BENSON,PAUL WALSH,JOY CONNELL,MICHAL LONERGAN,ADAM BARSH,MARIA SNOW,REBBECA SILETOE and many others who themselves were selling aquashield coatings to later return as ROOFSTYLES to then explain about aquashield going bust but while were there sing them up for a roof styles contract how convenient.THAY DO NOT HAVE ONE SINGLE TRADESMEN INSTALLING THE COATING AND SHOULD NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO CLIMB ON A ROOF.the contract ain't worth anything as you wont receive a guarantee.i myself have contacted aquashield customers from a year ago and they never received a warranty.if u ain't got one you have to claim on your house insurance that is the info from the warranty company and if that's the case aquashield are still costing you money if u have an excess to pay.i hope justice will be done for all these victims of heartless gready selfish status seeking big car driving parasites.one sales rep named above sold a wall coating to a 92 year old pensioner for ten grand it didnt need doing as it was tyralened and SHE called the customer a SUKER i hope she gets what is coming to her prefrably a highspeed train.sumthings got to give and i think it should be all the vultures that pray on the elderly.c**ts.

@anonymous: I am suing Hitachi Capital it is in the hands of my solicitor, the crap coating doesn't work, I had two roofing company's come out and look at my roof, I have a leak coming in the loft window, where the pressure washer has blasted the pointing a way. Aquashield have gone bust, but you can sue the finance company, under the sale and goods act, I know as I am doing it, if the coating has come off, like mine

Peeled, flaked, and washed off, also they put some black tiles on our roof as they ran out of Rosemary ones, I have been sorting this out for over 18 months now.

We agreed to pay £3000 on finance, no more than a week later when it rained it started washing off, also the roof was coated over a dirty roof roof, not cleaned properly.

NOW to all of you, you paid for a product that was supposed to do what they claimed it does, well, if it hasn't done all the things so call Aquashield claims it does, and expect you and me to pay thousands of pounds for, then you don't have to pay.

They showed us a video of how they do all the work in a process order, no safety equipment was worn, no safety harness, nothing, also they are miss selling a product as it hasn't done what they claims it does.

NO PRODUCT NO PAYMENT simple as that, we have a good solicitor we have a family protection on our house insurance so we are lucky, we gave the company 3 chances to re do the work, still not done properly, the product does not work.

If you bought something and it didn't work you would take it back, well under the sale and service rights you can sue Hitachi Capital as the finance company.

Hitachi have tried to say they will get another company to do the repairs, my solicitor said he is suing for the damage done to our roof and Aquashield had 3 chances to put it right more than enough.

We had murders getting them to come out, we sent emails to watch dog, we had lead blasted from round our chimney stack, tiles be came loose, pointing blasted, over spray on to next door roof 2 foot at least, all moss and leaching remained on the tiles they just sprayed over the top, you could still see the tile underneath it was so thin, it was a hell of a mess.

We were told by a good company that it was not water proofed like their web site claims, nor does it reduce your heating bills, or protect your roof, HOW CAN SOMETHING THAT WASHES OFF OR PEELS OFF HELP KEEP HEATING BILLS DOWN WHAT SHIT, WELL WE ARE NOT LETTING GO NO WAY.

Hitachi even had the cheek to put charges on to the £300 bill for non payment, tough they are not getting paid, on PRODUCT NO MONEY, PLEASSSSS done give up, if you are paying on finance STOP NOW and tell Hitachi you are taking legal action, since they know we are suing them they have stopped asking for payments.

Here is my email address if you want advice on Aquashield, I even got threatened by a member of the so called bunch of cow boys rip offs I recorded the conversation and took down the mobile number of the man who claimed was a director of the company, I let the head office in Glasgow listen down the phone they said it was not a director of the company, so I phoned Hitachi and let them listen too, but they still stick up for them.

DO NOT PAY A PENNY AND IF YOU ARE STOP NOW IF WE ALL STICK TOGETHER WE WILL STOP THEM

I have just had a salesman at my front door claiming to be from a company called Roofstyle. Very glossy brouchure, chatty and charming salesman etc and the work he was offering seemed to be good value for money...too good to be true in fact. He advised me someone would phone within the next hour to discuss a quote for work. Thankfully I am quite savvy and went straight online to check the website and look for some reviews of this company. Thank goodness I did! Apparently they appear to be the old Aquashield but trading under a new name - the work is exactly the same and a majority of people appear to have been ripped off. I shall be informing the person who rings back that I do not want them to call at my house again and to remove my contact details from their system. So if anyone in the North East gets a cold call from Roofstyles or Roofstyles Coatings - stay clear!

IMPORTANT - If you get a cold call from a 'thermal roof coating' firm, ask if they use a high pressure washer to clean the roof. If they say 'yes' then they are cowboys. High pressure cleaning damages and dislodges roof tiles. Legitimate roofers use low pressure systems with special solvents for cleaning. A neighbour had his roof treated last year - and then had to spend thousands more in repairs months later. Another neighbour was quoted £10,000 for the treatment. A brand new roof works out at £5,500 ffs!!! Beware of cowboys in white vans weilding Karchers! (No reflection on Karcher - who make great products)

I had the same problems with Aquashield. My roof was "coated" 3 times in 6 months and now my roof is green even though it was coated rustic!!. Aquashield were to come to see the roof on 6 occasions and they didn't turn up at all. The Customer Service Manager was most arrogant and ignorant and totally uncaring so not a good advert for a Customer Service Manager. I wrote to "The Judge" and Trading Standards and I am now aware that Aquashield are in liquidation and that the owner has another company. I wish I had never let them in my house and talk me into getting my roof done. Dalgety Bay franchise did the work the three times and not only did they cover my roof my car got covered along with my windows and the neighbours walls and windows. Useless company who are only interested in getting money for shoddy workmanship. The guarantee is not worth the paper it's written on either!!!!! Beware anyone thinking about getting their roof coated that's what I say and also beware any Glaswegians selling you it too. They can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk!!!!!

@anonymous: As noted above and in the comments, the company went into liquidation so that they didn't have to fix their mistakes or refund customers and the unscrupulous owners have moved on to new cons. I believe that your only hope is if you took out a finance agreement, which I did not. If you did, try contacting your finance company.

@anonymous: Low pressure roof cleaning only works on roofs that are only discoloured. This method it popular in America. Here in the UK roofs are blighted with thick moss. High pressure is the preferred method to shift this. No damage is caused if done by experience people.

I clean roofs for a living. We're a small company and take pride in what we do. Companies like Aquashield give us a bad name.

Protex Thermal Solutions - Glasgow - Warning

Got job quoted last week and had good price from them. Roof got washed down on Tuesday and repair work was due to start on Wednesday. No show Wednesday.

Called them. They say more repair work needs doing and they have ordered the materials, roofer due out Thursday - no show!

Friday morning, call them again. The amount of repair work has now got bigger it seems and my roof is not suitable for them to repair and coat. They proceed to try and up sell me a new roof.

So, to summarise. Product sold as a flat price and they will do all repair work not matter how much work needs done (obviously not). Their estimator/sales man did not do his job right and quoted too low I would surmise. They then see they are going to make no margin on the job and bail out leaving me with a clean roof granted, but with more damage to the tiles from the cleaning process.

Unprofessional service. I've had to make all the calls to them to find out what is going on. They say they have tried to call me - hmm, you have my mobile, home and work numbers, no messages. Plus I've been at home when they say they called.

Please feel free to spread news on this supplier and make people aware of them. Thank you.

      PS. know any good roofers?

Mr Gorman and Mr Deans took over during the months that I was trying to battle depression and get the work 'fixed'. They are all 4 equally liable and are all 4 equally SCUM.

I have updated my site as you requested. I have included information about Aquashield and their new names on each of the three pages where I displayed your images. I have also kept the links back to Squidoo in place.

      Example - http://www.roofapex.com/blog/2011/07/contact-aquas...

You may want to print off this page as it is proof that at least one of the companies you mentioned is owned by Aquashield.

Just come home from my mother in laws, she`s 76, and she`s got some damp in the corner of one of her rooms. I looked all over and couldn`t figure out why, until I ran a hose pipe over the roof. I thought the gutter must be blocked and it was overflowing back into the soffit and flooding out down the wall. When I got up the ladder to take a look the gutter is fine so the water is running through the tiles and straight into the soffit. Then the old girl pipes up with "I only had that roof done a little while ago"!!!!!! Guess who!!!!! You got it, Aquashield. I wish she`d talk to us before she does these things, if only because we have so many contacts in the building trade ourselves. Now i`m looking forward to long telephone calls with Hitachi Finance. Let`s hope they stay around longer than Aquashield, but then she`s paying them a lot of money every month so I reckon they will.

@anonymous: To the best of my knowledge, they are not the same people, however, having had my roof coated and seen others done by other companies, it is not something I would recommend no matter who the company is. @anonymous: Whatever they say about the product, at the end of the day it's only paint. The pressure washing they do can also be a problem depending on the type of roof tyles your mother has. I would honestly recommend NOT having it done by any company. Better to hold off, save up and have a new roof later in time. I have seen many of these coated roofs (now that I've been looking) that are patchy and covered in moss and they could not all have been done by Aquashield. I'm seeing lots of signs for "Thermal Coatings" crop up where my own mother lives and I honestly pity the poor people for wasting their money.

@anonymous: The only thing I have that is underwritten is a 90 Day Deposit Protection. The guarantee itself is just a sheet like a home-made certificate with the AS shield and rubber duck on it. The deposit protection states that it finishes when the full contract value is paid, or 90 days after the payment of the deposit, whichever is earlier. However, if you want to try, the underwriter on my paperwork is: Elite Insurance Company Ltd, 913 Europort, Europort Road, Gibraltar. As I say, the 'Guarantee' is a piece of homemade rubbish with no contract number, nothing legal or insurance-like whatsoever.

@anonymous: Aquashield are a scam company and like most other roof coating companies they used fishy sales tactics. Concrete tiles will last over 100 years before the whole roof needs to be replaced. Any roof coating will last 5 - 10 years before it wears off, so it's just a waste of money and won't protect your roof long term from the most common causes of leaks - broken tiles, dislodged tils, loose cement, cracked lead or the like.

Suggest you get in touch with a real roofing company to diagnose the leak and give you a written quote to fix it - probably just a broken tile.

A man called Gavin called to inspect the damage in January 2011 and said he could not repair the roof as there was snow on it. He said I would be compensated for the damage in the front bedroom and it would be made good. I have tried to contact Saul Joicey who gave me a business card but he appears to refuse to take my call and the wall gets more damp every day. I have contacted the Independent Warranty Association who told me that they cannot issue a guarantee. I was told that IWA are administrators and managers for Elite Insurance Company who insure home improvement Products. Can anyone give me a telephone number that has not been cut off so that I can try to contact John Gorman and see if he will send some one to repair the leaking roof and pay for the damage to the bedroom walls as it has now spread. I live in Teesside hence my reply to Pro Roof Coater. Thanks

@anonymous: Hi, as far as I can tell, the directors of that company are not associated with Aquashield or any of the new companies. However if I were you I firstly seek out other homes in the area that have had work done by this company and secondly consider what real benefits a coat of paint on your roof will have - my neighbour's roof is COVERED in moss after less than 2 years. Several of my tiles were snapped clean in two but were only disturbed and fell off in high winds after Aquashield liquidated.

Hi Folks! Have signed a contract in July 2011 with THERMAL COATINGS LTD, Sandpiper Way, Strathclyde Business Park, Belshill, Glasgow and paid a Deposit of £50 to have my roof coated. No work has been carried out as i told them i wouldn't have money until beginning of next year. They stated that as long as i had it done before end of March 2012 i could have it for £1,450 (not to tell anyone i got it for that price!) Is there any legal way they could force me to have it done? I am a single parent on low income and every penny is precious and now don't want to get involved with them after reading that they are linked to Aquashield Ltd. I don't want to be in a position of having to try and find money to rectifiy a possible nightmare of a stituation with this Company.....PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Here are the first few lines of the web registration for Protex.

      Results for protex-solutions.co.uk :

      Domain name: protex-solutions.co.uk

      Registrant: Aquashield Glasgow

      Registrant type: Unknown

Registrant's address: 539-553 Shettleston Road Shettleston Glasgow G64 1JF United Kingdom

So, not connected with Aquashield at all!!!!

Also I compared the customer recommendations on the aquashield web site (archived on http://www.archive.org/web/web.php) and the similar page on the protex site (link now removed but still available at http://www.protex-solutions.co.uk/Customer_Reviews... The letters are exactly the same except that "Aquashield" has been replaced by "Protex", and oddly they have all been apparently written by different people.

I paid £535 deposit to Aquashield in September 2010 and cancelled within 7 days but never got my money back.

Just had another roof coating company call at my house... Roof Save - DORKING, Surrey business is run by a little idiot called Gilbert Thompson and his son. Claims to be a master roofer but I bet he has never even been on a roof. They offer thermal roof coating and even say its the same as thermal coatings, just cheaper. Avoid this like the plague sounds so dodgy.

Thermal Coatings came round to my elderly parents this morning after a doorstep visit earlier in the week. My mum doesn't do well under pressure so agreed to it. I wish she'd just tell these type of folks to get lost.

Anyway the guy turned up this morning for his 20 mins, which turned into 45 mins and would have been a lot longer had I not intervened. His original quote to wash the roof and paint it was £4,300!! I had to say it out loud twice and ask him if he was serious!!

He said he could get 10% off that if we became a 'show house' and said he would work out the new price. I'd heard enough by then, fancy claims about this and that. I told him not to bother and be on his way (my exact words were shut your book and do one mate!!).

He protested but said he wasn't prepared to argue with me to which I replied 'Good cos you will lose'. He said he was just doing as he was told by his bosses and wasn't deliberately scamming people yet admitted we didn't have any leaks, moss, lichen or broken tiles!! (so why quote then??).

I stood up to physically remove him and he said 'whoa whoa I don't want any trouble', grabbed his shoes and hopped it.

Ive never heard such rubbish and have now stumbled across this page so am glad I was justified in doing what I did. As he left he said it wasn't his fault if we were too poor to buy it!!! Man I was fuming but I noted that he jumped in his car and roared off so not that brave.

She had an alarm company try a similar thing last year, they wanted 11 grand!! What the hell is this world coming too??!!

We live in Buckinghamshire by the way, near Aylesbury

Please do not listen or take into account any of this propaganda you are reading on here about Thermal Coatings Ltd, there is an ongoing investigation into this which will hopefully be resolved soon and legal action will be taken. A lot of ex employees who are bitter and companies who envy Thermal Coatings Ltd success adopt scare mongering tactics such as this website to give the company a bad name, as you will notice all of these derogatory comments are anonymous and unfounded. If you take the time to look into the correct Thermal Coatings you will find that they are Trust Marked company and registered with Fair Trades you will find this info on the website www.thermalcoatings.co.uk. If you have any issues with the company then do not hesitate to contact their Head office in Scotland or Woking on 0800 138 9401 and any issues will be looked into and resolved.

There are both positive and negative reviews on this lens, if I were instigating propaganda then surely I would have deleted the positive reviews?? The web address I have given above shows an interesting connection and people can draw their own conclusions from it. I I am neither an ex-employee nor a rival; I am a previous Aquashield customer who was totally conned, subjected to shoddy workmanship and given the complete runaround until the company dissolved. I have no experience with Thermal Coatings Ltd and make no claim to have had. I still say that paint is paint is paint and if you want your roof to be sound then invest in getting the tiles replaced - it's what I would do if I could go back and change things. Again, people are free to form their own opinions on that.

They oversold the product but after we had paid the deposit I did a background check on them since their documentation was appalling and I didn't believe their figures. They had registered as a business only 3 weeks before they saw us (despite stating otherwise on their blurb) and there were so many other Protex liquidations on the list it was crazy. I cancelled and went with Icon who did an excellent job for us (& more for less). When we cancelled, Protex staff were rude and defiant. We are still chasing the deposit through our lawyers despite cancelling well within the cooldown period. If it has a Protex label - BURN IT!

I worked for aquashield for a short time 4 years ago and have worked in roofcoating eversince. I have my own company now (which has absolutley no connections with aquashite or any of the other companies that are tied to it) whilst your lens is informative its also taring us all with the same brush. Its right that aquashield persistently had problems with installations and have done there best to give us all a bad name but there are good companies out there. We pride ourselves on customer satisfaction, our fitters are EMPLOYED and time served roofers who are monitored regularly all our customers are called after installation to make sure they're happy, we ONLY use the best coatings. Sales wise were happy for a customer to call us back and take as long as they need to decide if its for them. People of a certain age are asked if they want a family member present and because that's not always possible for them we never take a deposit. Were proud of the way we do business, so please remember there are good and bad out there. Im not here touting for business, just thought it was right to explain that in many many industries theres good and bad. Just choose wisely!!!

Roof coating is cosmetic and will not prevent wind uplift storm damage or stop any adverse elements penetrating a roof area..

Plain and simple if your roof needs to be renewed then you will know about it and no lick of paint will stop the rot

I have seen the company's working in my area

Ie. the famous aquashield Aqua seal and Thermal coatings ltd

All of the aboves work shows signs after a couple of years of fading if not completely washing off

The workmen take 2 days maximum to carry out the work

      Efficient I hear you say???

Speaking to my neighbours in the area there has been price ranging from 4000-£12000 quoted for this service average 2 bed bungalows ( most of the houses are the same size ) and furthermore over £20000 yes twenty thousand pounds quoted for full strip and re-tiles of property's

Only for them to say but our coating is this much and it's as good as a new roof!!

      Very clever tactic

And I urge people to be on there guard against these company's who will take your hard earned cash with a great big smile

Try get the same level of respect and care when something goes wrong With your shabby painted roof

These sharks will leave you out of pocket and out of your depth as they will backtrack on guarantees and hide behind the fact they are members of organisations they think help give them the right to make a shambles of peoples property's ( putting it politely )

Try them at your peril I say but that's just my opinion

Oh and just had a local well established for over 30 years in my town roofing company survey my roof to quote me for a newly tiled roof

What was that £6000 materials and labour

But The roof coating salesmen said the paint was £5000

      Hmm who to choose

@anonymous: Paint is paint can you be as kind as to explain why you think your paint will last longer than ( aquashites ) paint and why if your business is so successful are you trying to distance yourself away from aquashite so much..??

The previous director of Aquashield is now director of "Thermal Coatings Ltd".

It would seem that his new company isn't just applying the same crap useless paint to roofs but also using "hard sell" tactics such as refusing to leave a customers home on request.

Office of Fair Trading report - http://www.oft.gov.uk/OFTwork/consumer-enforcement...

It would appear that this is also a nasty company to deal with. I wonder how many elderly people have fallen victim to these sales tactics but are too afraid to complain?

      @anonymous: Daniel.

A tiled roof DOES NOT last 100 years, and to suggest it does is dangerous. People need to keep a very close eye on concrete tiled roofs after 40yrs or so. The tiles will become porous, and sarking can begin to show signs of damp. It is universally suggested that the average lifespan of a concrete roof such as Marley is between 50 and 60 yrs. More for slate obviously. A roof coating is pointless once a tile gets past about 40yrs, as the coating will simply soak into the tiles, as the water does.

@ArtformTheHeart: True roof coating companies do not use paint. Check out nutech. Their roof COATINGS are great, do what they say, and have never been used by aquashield. Also, no reputable roof coating company will guarantee against moss, this is not what the product is designed to do. Short of standing in your garden with a gun, there is nothing you can do to stop birds dropping moss seeds on your roof
