My Experience with Aquashield (Protex Thermal/Energy Solutions)
Aquashield are Franchises - Correction WERE Franchises as many have now liquidated!
Although Aquashield advertise as a UK national company, beware that it is actually a collection of many small franchises, each individually owned an managed. This lens is about my experience with Aquashield Glasgow North Ltd although there are four different franchises regitered with Companies House to the same address as this franchise - including Aquashield Glasgow South Ltd. All franchises seem to use shared promotiona material; flyers, folders, business cards, contracts all have one of two website addresses: www.aquashieldcoatings.com or www.aquashield.co.uk. However if you experience problems with your franchise and try to contact them via either of these websites you are likely to be told that "it was not their office who carried out your work".
Update Feb 2011 : Several if not all of these related franchises are now in liquidation, however, the same people may still be operating other different franchise names.
These people are seriously SICK!
22nd July 2011
I have had SEVERAL phonecalls from PROTEX THERMAL SOLUTIONS / PROTEX ENERGY SOLUTIONS now. The last four times I have told them that I firmly believe the company is run by the same people as Aquashield (funny, both operate from the same business address huh?). Both times the salesgirls have said "no, I don't think so". Second to last time they called, I told them outright to take my phone number off their list - guess they didn't. Last time I told the girl outright (after saying that I believe they ARE Aquashield under a new name/company no.) that I was conned by Aquashield who did a terrible job with a crap product - lets see if they call back! If they do, I may sue for harassment! Protex Thermal/Energy Solutions operate out of the exact same address at 565 Shettleston Rd, Glasgow as did Aquashield. The promotional photographs on their website are the same ones as those used by Aquashield.....they ARE Aquashield - the last phonecall I had the female canvasser pretty much admitted that they are Auashield. They called me from telphone number 0141 554 0731. Another of their numbers - from a free advertisement for job opportunities as canvassers is 07821432036. Their facebook page is rather empty at the moment, but for info, here is the link Protex
Aquashield Franchising Limited changed it's name to Thermahome Ltd around the time the franchises themselves went into liquidation so it's another company to be very wary of.
April 2011 UPDATE
New Operating Names for Aquashield
As many Aquashield franchises are now being sold on or going into liquidation, it's only right that consumers are made aware of new ventures being undertaken by these greedy, unscrupulous people. These include to the best of my knowledge: FreeElectricity4U, PV Solar, Protex Thermal coatings/Solutions and Roofstyles. Please be very careful and do your homework if you are planning to get quotes from any of these firms!! If you have elderly relatives that may be susceptible to the tactics of the unethical sales teams, please warn them!!
In the middle of October 2009 when a representative of Aquashield knocked on my door I agreed to an appointment with a salesperson to give me a quote for repairing and recoating my roof. I had known for a while that the roof was in a terrible state with several missing tiles and with winter fast approaching I knew that I had to bite the bullet and pay someone to fix it. I was also hoping t sell my house before summer 2010 and so a 'new' roof seemed like a good selling point.
The salesman came (the Sales Manager Iain Davidson no less), gave me the speil and his quote, telling me about the benefits of the coating and how it would increase the value of my house by 8%. It seemed fairly reasonable when he added that he would give me an "advertising discount" if I would agree to have an Aquashield board placed in my garden for one month after the work was completed. I accepted the offer and signed the contract; though I declined hid offer to fraudulently complete a credit agreement whereby payment would be deferred for a year - I was unemployed due to ill health and he offered to complete the credit agreement paperwork with my former employer's details as though I was still working there. Nice to know that you have absolutely no morals Mr Davidson.
Around 10 days after signing the contract an Aquashield "Surveyor" Joseph Bradley arrived to measure up my house. That took less than 2 minutes as all he did was run an old style tape measure from one side of my house to the other. When I asked if he needed to go around the rear of the property he said "no" and that was it, he left. The following week workmen arrived to begin the work; pressure washing my roof to remove any dirt and moss, and replacing missing and damaged tiles. That seemed to go okay and I was told that they would return "on a dry day" to complete the work. The next day however I noticed that they hadn't cleaned all of my roof; I live in a mid-terraced property and at the front of my house, to one side they had missed a strip from the ridge tiles right down to the guttering, about 18-24 inches wide. I called the office and was told that the workmen would return to assess the problem. Eventually they arrived and straight away said that they couls see what the problem was. The house to my left is a council-owned property and when council workmen had painted the guttering on my neighbour's property, they had inadvertently overlapped 18-24 inches onto my property. When Aquashield washed my roof, they used the painted guttering as a guidline for where to stop. The workmed tried to tell me that it "would look stupid" if they coated that strip of roof because the guttering was a different colour to my own and that it would be better to leave it as was! I pointed out that the strip of roof was mine, it belonged to my property, it was my house below that piece of roof and I was paying to have it washed, treated and coated. They agreed to wash the missed section when they returned to complete the work.
Another week passed before they returned, but true to their word they washed and coated the section of roof they had missed first time around. I inspected the work and pointed out a couple of broken tiles they had failed to replace, refusing to pay until it was done. I was told that they had no more tiles in the van but after a phonecall to the office I was told tha they would return the next day with replacement tiles.
The next day I had two job interviews and although I wasn't overly happy paying the company without being there myself to inspect the work, with the pressure of the interviews I rather stupidly left a cheque for payment with my neighbour and asked her to pass it on to the workmen if they should arrive while I was out. When I arrived home, my neighbour greeted me and confirmed that the workmen had indeed been. I checked my roof and the broken tiles had been replaced.
The next day my sister came over to visit. Although it was raining very slightly, I took her outside to have a look at my 'new roof'. You can imagine how shocked I was to see that, just two days after the coating was applied, it had almost completely washed off of the section the workmen had failed to wash when they came initially. I telephoned the Aquashield office straight away and was told that someone would call me back. After waiting several hours, and being that it was a Friday afternoon close to 5 O'clock, I called back myself to ensure that I got to speak to someone and voice my complaint before the weekend. Finally I was told that the workmen would be sent to assess the problem. Over the next several days I took photographs of my roof - putting the photos onto my laptop revealed more areas where the coating had been missed, was patchy or was wahing off and it was getting worse each time that it rained.
Getting Repairs Done
It took several phonecalls to Aquashield, asking to speak to managers, waiting for callbacks, and around two weeks waiting before any workmen came back to rectify the problems with my roof. I had expressed my dissatisfaction with the original workmen and so they sent a different team. Since having taken photographs of my roof I noted several more broken tiles and was told that these would be replaced. I had also requested that my roof be re-washed to remove any loose paint coating prior to the new work being done but was told that this wasn't necessary. So the new workmen spent less than one hour re-spraying my roof and allowed me to inspect it before leaving - all looked good. The next day however it rained and once again, the paint began washing off. After several more phonecalls to Aquashield and recorded delivery letters to the Managing Director, I was told mid-December that they were waiting for "several dry days" before sending anyone back out. A week before Christmas, I noticed that the workmen were at a neighbour's house cleaning the roof. I wewnt to speak to them and again was told that they were waiting for several conscutive dry days before coming back to work on my roof. Later I spoke to the neighbour and warned her of the problems I had had. I also found out that she had been given the same advertising discount that I had been given - despite Aquashield's claim that only one house per neighbourhood can receive this - so it's simply a sales ploy designed to make potential customers believe they are getting a good deal.
Sometime during the second week of January 2010 Aquashield came and completed work on my neighbour's house - I wasn't home at the time otherwise I would have enquired as to why they could do that roof with the current weather conditions yet they couldn't complete my work. The weather has been up and down temperature wise but has been dry most days since January so when I called Aquashield on Monday 15th March 2010 I made sure that I pointed that out. I asked to speak to the Remedials Manager but was told that he was not in the office and he would call me back (still waiting for that 2 days later). I asked the girl I spoke to (Deyna) why my roof had not yet been fixed and was informed that it "was down for March) when I pointed out that we are already mid-way through March, I was told they were waiting for warmer weather (there had been snow on the ground when the company worked on my neighbour's roof - although I was cut off before I could point that out).

Signed Contract October 2009
still waiting for repairs March 2010
Be very cautious if you are considering hiring any of the Aquashield franchises to do work for you. Consider hiring a private roofing firm who will likely be considerably cheaper and only perform treatment to your roof under optimal conditions. Aquashield rely on branding, private contractors rely on reputaion so they care more about the quality of their work.
Since signing the contract with Aquashield, I discovered that they were on the television programme "Rogue Traders" and that the expert opinion was that you would be as well to paint your roof with reqular masonry paint as have Aquashield coat your roof, for all the good it does.
May 2010 ...... still waiting
Despite telling me that my 'job' was on the books for repairs to be done in March, nothing happened. The Remedials Manager did not return my phonecall as I was told would happen. I used an online form to contact The Judge from the Sunday Mail Newspaper, and almost 3 weeks ago got a letter back saying that he had contacted Aquashield - still nothing. The hand-painted sign "Aquashield bodged my roof" shown a little way up the page, is on A1 paper, that's pretty big; it actually takes up the whole of the rear windscreen of my car as I drive around, and it's a permanent fixture in my car until Aquashield return to fix my roof. They have one more week to comply with The Judge from the Sunday Mail, if they do not then I have to contact him again. I will also be getting a quote from a local builder for repairs which I will be including in a case in the small claims court.
Please feel free to leave your comments, be sure to mention how long you have been waiting for repairs and which Aquashield franchise did your work.
Four weeks after contacting the Sunday Mail, when I hadn't heard anything from Aquashield, I contacted "The Judge" again, and again he/they wrote to Aquashield, telling me this time to give them 3 weeks to get in touch. Well, three and a half weeks later, I got a letter from Aquashield Thermal Coatings Ltd telling me that they had been made aware of my complaint (as if this was something new to them and not something I'd been telling them for 8 months!). The letter stated that I would be contacted within 28 days to arrange a date to start the work. The letter was signed by someone with the same name as the girl whom I have spoken to on the telephone over a dozen times, coincidence? Later the same day, an Aquashield workman turned up at my house to redo my roof. Again, when they finished, I inspected the work and all looked okay, though I pointed out that it had looked okay the last twice it had been done. That was today so I shall be keeping a close eye on my roof over the next few days/weeks to see what happens the first time it rains. Wish me luck, I need it! As I said to the workman, hopefully it's third time lucky (but I still think their product is a load of rubbish).
So, the coating is still on my roof - Great!!! BUT, we had heavy snow December/January and a couple of tiles have come off my roof; broken tiles that have clean breaks, most likely snapped when the workmen walked along the roof but only dislodged by the weight of the snow or the high winds we had a few weeks ago. Again, this is one of the major reasons legitimate tradesmen say they don't like to treat my type of roof tile. So if you have ROSEMARY tiles then beware. I highly doubt that my "guarantee" will cover broken tiles and I have no way to prove how/why they broke. Sadly I noticed 3 neighbours in a nearby street are also having their roofs cleaned in preparation for coating though I didn't manage to see whether it was Aquashield or the new company going around that uses a very dodgy looking Disney's Donald Duck design on their vans.
So, I just had yet ANOTHER Aquashield canvasser at my door - some of the local franchises may have gone into liquidation but others are clearly still very much active in my area.

Aquashield had a facebook page here that was "liked" by some of their employees, funny, but many of them now have Protex listed as their employer.
Sign my ePetition to change how individuals can form companies
let's put a stop to companies like these!
I put together an ePetition on the new, Government run website calling for changes to be made to who/how limited liability companies are formed - hopefully it will gain enough signatures to be debated in the House of Commons. It's too easy and all too common for companies to liquidate in this way, only to reappear under a different name and with no liability.
