Are Riedel Wine Glasses Really Worth the Money???

Updated on February 9, 2013

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, or more accurately, tasted it myself, I would not have believed that a Riedel glass was, in fact, worth the extra money. But it is....

The Taste Test Comparison

My first real encounter with Riedel was on a Celebrity Cruise ship. They were offering a wine tasting class, for not a lot of money, that focused on tasting several different varietals in different shaped glasses. Four of the glasses were different varietal specific Riedel glasses, and the fifth glass, was the typical cheap looking short and narrow wine glass. This glass was referred to as the "joker glass." Sounded like fun, so I signed up.

Wine Glass Tasting Done Right

The class was such fun, and the results were amazing. The Riedel glasses are designed to allow a specific amount of exposure to air, and the shape of the rim directs the wine onto a specific part of your tongue, which changes the way you perceive the characteristics of the wine. Over and over again, each wine proved to taste and smell best in the varietal specific glass! Like I said, I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it, smelled it, and tasted it, myself: an expensive glass can improve a cheap wine, and a cheap glass can mute an expensive wine.

The Verdict

The next time I was cruising, a similar Riedel class was offered, that included a set of glasses to take home. I signed up, again, only this time I had the pleasure of taking the glasses home with me. And I would be remiss if I did not mention, the glasses are truly lovely to look at as well. The verdict -- The Riedel glasses are definitely worth the money. Put them on your Christmas or Birthday will enjoy them for years. Or get them for your special someone at Valentine's'll both enjoy the benefits....of the wine, of course!
