Baby Room Decorating Ideas

Boy or Girl?

The baby’s room is one room in the house you want to look sweet, adorable, and lovely.

You want it to be a nice place to relax and read a book to baby or a cozy place to spread out blocks and play. You can have the nursery of your dreams with a little creative planning.

If you know whether you’re having a girl or a boy, you can narrow down your choices a bit. It may serve you well to find out ahead of time if you are the type of person who does not like surprises and likes every detail planned out.

But even if you are that type, your doctor may not be able to see what you’re having due to the baby’s position in your womb. In that case, go with a lively and fanciful design that can work for either a girl or a boy.

Bring a Children’s Book to Life

There are so many darling children’s books available. You won’t have to struggle to find a cute one to design a room around. If you love that little monkey Curious George, why not design a yellow room in a cheerful hue with the little guy as the focal point?

You can purchase Curious George merchandise or enlarge passages from the books and incorporate them into art or text on the walls. Use Curious George as an applique on curtains or pillows. You can always change them out easily if you want to redo the room.

So many other excellent books make great room décor choices: Madeline, Miss Spider, Charlotte’s Web, and Clifford are just a few.

Fun Colors

Go Bold and Bright

Young infants can see only black, white, and red at first. These are great colors to start off with in your nursery as they’ll be able to focus in on their surroundings quicker.

Paint one wall white, one red, and do accents in geometric patterns of black. Or paint knobs of dressers and edges of mirrors in an accent color. You could even set up a personalized step stool to match.

You can also find bedding in these colors as they are popular for infants.

Soothe the Senses

Especially if you don’t know the sex of your baby, go with a cool, calm color like sea foam green. This color is just enough of a pastel without being too cutesy.

You can purchase a set of furniture in this color and then add accents like navy blue for a boy and purple for a girl. Sea foam, or any of the lighter greens, is perfect for doing a beach themed room or one with fun underwater creatures like happy fish and whales.

Add pillows, baby blankets and throw rugs with the theme, instead of painting large fish on the walls, so you can easily change them out if you desire.

Lullaby Land

Children love to be sung to. Make your baby’s room an ode to music.

Musical notes are black, so baby can easily see them. Design oversized notes for accents like lampshades, pillow covers, and throws.

Plan to have a library of lullabies on CD for baby to fall asleep to. You can paint the walls with a ripple effect that simulates sound waves for a fun departure from the ordinary.

Include hand written words to lyrics on the walls as well. Pick favorite songs like Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star or verses from nursery rhymes.

I like the idea about using a children's book as a theme. That is very creative.

I love these ideas! I think a calming nursery would be wonderful both for the parents and for the baby :)
