How Mattress Covers Help

The problem with some bed bug mattress and pillow covers is that they are designed for a quick sale. When you have an infestation you need to be able to machine wash and dry the mattress cover. Protective covers that are not designed with bed bug infestation in mind will fall apart or change shape in the dry cycle.

It is very frustrating to buy a product, and then find out you have to buy another. When it comes to bed bug infestation, two essential items you need are bed bug pillow and mattress covers. Pillows may not seem like that big of a deal, but mattresses are expensive. A good mattress cover can prevent the need to throw your bed away.

To save a bed bug infested mattress you can vacuum the mattress, and then use diatomaceous earth powder inside of the cover and seal the mattress inside. A high-quality mattress cover will prevent any survivors from surviving for long.

Using mattress and pillow covers are a huge help during beg bug infestations, and will help prevent you spending more money than you have to spend. You can't treat a bed bug infestation with a mattress cover alone, but it is one important part of a bed bug plan.

What to look for when buying bed bug proof mattress covers:

  • Non-vinyl
  • Machine dry
  • Bed bug proof zipper
  • PVC free
  • Six-sided protection
  • Warranty

Bed Bug Pillow Covers

Pillows are cheaper and easier to replace. Many people try to go this route. However, if your pillow is approved for the dryer, you can just dry it instead. This will kill the bugs if it is done on high heat for an hour.

Once it is out of the dryer, you want to do something to prevent it from getting reinfested. That is where a good pillowcase cover comes in. Again, the cover is only bed-bug proof if it covers the entire pillow and seals up, such as with a zipper.

The nice thing about SafeGuard pillowcase covers is the material they are made of. Like the mattresses, you don't hear the sound of plastic beneath your head. Some competitors make their pillow covers out of vinyl, and that is too noisy for sleep.

SureGuard Bed Bug Matress Cover Review

SureGuard makes pillow and mattress covers that provide six side encasement. I have seen some brands that just cover the top and sides. That makes no sense to me because it does you no good. The bed bugs will still infest your mattress and then crawl around to get you.

It's essential to invest in a cover that provides complete coverage, and that zips up for a tight seal. You may even wish to put a piece of duct tape over the zipper once it is closed, to prevent anyone from unzipping it. If you have children in your house then I would defiantly place a piece of duct tape over the zipper.

Pros

SureGuard products meet all of these requirements. I wish someone had told me this before I bought my first mattress cover, which melted in the dryer.

The reason this product is better than generic mattress covers is because it is vinyl free. There are other hidden benefits of having a mattress cover. Not only do they protect from bed bugs, they also protect from dust mites, allergens, and bacteria.

They actually make your mattress last much longer. The truth is that everyone should use a mattress cover to lengthen the life of their mattress. Another pro is that the mattress is waterproof, with a terrycloth top. This makes it nearly silent. No plastic noises beneath you while you sleep.

Cons

Bed bug removal is expensive, and so are mattress covers. SafeGuard is more expensive than some of its competitors. This can be a setback when you are already spending so much money. Some other cons are:

  • Does not keep cool like bamboo mattress covers
  • Zipper sometimes sticks (wash with the zipper closed)
  • Mattress covers are not a solution to keep from being bitten, they occupy more than mattresses.

Couch Encasement for Bed Bug Prevention

Some people give negative product reviews because they are still being bitten by bed bugs after the mattress cover is installed. It is a myth that bed bugs only live on mattresses. You still need to exterminate the bed bugs through other methods.

Encasements are not meant to solve bed bug problems, they are only meant to protect your furniture. Replacing multiple items might be too expensive. It isn't just the mattress you can save this way. There are couch encasements on, the market, as well.

Buying a new couch is more expensive than buying full couch encasement. You are in the best shape if you encase your couch before bed bugs get there. It is possible to save a couch after infestation, it just takes more work.

Make sure the size dimensions of the encasement match your couch. These things are very expensive, and some of them have a no return policy. If you don't have a tape measure, now is the time to get one.

Attention!

Don't forget to protect the babies and young children!

Crib Encasments

Bed bug crib encasements have hit the market. Safety is priority number one. The mattress cover must have a secure 360 design, with a childproof zipper. If a mattress cover is not secure, it could become a suffocation hazard for baby.

If you can find one that is hypoallergenic and waterproof, then that is an added benefit. But, it is a must to buy one that is free of PVC and phthalates. Be picky when buying anything that will be so close to your babies skin. It's OK to demand the best for your little one.

Important Reminders!

I can not impress how important getting covers are when it comes to bed bugs. These creatures are small and devious and can make you lose a lot of money by ruining your furniture and beds. It does not have to be that way, and you do not have to throw those items out.

Even if a professional comes in to treat your bed bug infestation, their warranty is often void unless you take the time to get a mattress, pillow and in some cases, couch covers. It depends on the professional, so it is best to ask before you give them any money.

Some professionals will provide them for you, where others will require you have them purchased by the day they come to exterminate. You don't want to find out that the bed bug exterminators warranty is no good because you did not know about covers.

In all cases, it is better to be safe than sorry. Every person who has, or is worried, about bed bugs should invest in bed bug mattress, pillow and furniture covers. They lengthen the life of your furniture anyway, so why not?
