Best Garden Hose Turned Nightmare

What Do You Want for Mothers Day?

On our anniversary we went to the San Francisco Flower show. My husband is a good sport. He isn't a gardening fan, but he is a gadget guy. There were all sorts of gadgets and demonstrations, so it wasn't pure torture. The garden hose guy especially held our attention. He had a large barrel full of water showing off one of the,"As Seen On TV" scrunchy type hose. It was extremely light-weight. The water pressure seemed good, and it didn't leak.

We considered purchasing the hose at the flower show, but didn't. We didn't want to carry it around the whole show. What a mistake. I needed a hose, but that hose kept coming to mind.

When asked "What do you want for Mother's Day", there wasn't a moments hesitation; "One of those scrunchy hoses!" My family thinks gardening is torture. They try to get me things for gardening, but they don't enjoy shopping at nursery's, so my expectations are not high.

Mother's Day I was eating breakfast in bed, The family handed an Amazon box, was a ,"Sorry it isn't wrapped". I thought that box had a pair of headphones. I was totally surprised. The box was so light weight I couldn't believe there was a hose in it.

What Is So Special About This Hose

The Rumford Gardner Expanding hose is light weight weight, compact and takes up very little space. Baby H.J. can drag it all over the yard. He and I have had a wonderful summer watering the garden with this hose. When it's time to put it away we laugh as the hose snakes all over the place shrinking into a tiny pile of hose under the spigot.

I love this hose. It is light weight, curls up small and is out of sight at the spigot. This tiny hose reaches to 75 feet. It was my personal favorite.

H.J. has a good memory. One day, as he was watering, he turned the hose on me. I shrieked! The next time we watered, H.J. looked at me as he watered, gave me a little grin, then pointed the hose my direction. I just laughed. We have had great water fun all summer. The parts of the garden that are hard to water are flourishing.

While watering the garden one evening, thinking, " I have had so much fun with H.J and this hose, this a wonderful hose", Bam! It exploded. Twelve inches of the hose let lose and water gushed out in a sheet. I was heartbroken. My wonderful dream hose turned into a nightmare.

The Dream Turns Into A Nightmare

The dream hose went out with the garbage yesterday. After 21/2 months, in July, it sprung a leak. Not a bad leak, but it was a leak. I kept using the hose daily. At exactly three months the hose catastrophically failed. About a foot of it came undone. I went to Amazon to see if there was any recourse. The hose at the garden show had at least a year guarantee. No such luck with Amazon.

Thankfully at $19.00 it didn't break the bank. When I looked at the comments on Amazon all the hoses failed either at 2 weeks or 3 months. Mine failed at exactly 3 month, and my son's failed at 2 weeks.

This would be a fantastic hose if it lasted more than a few months.

Peggy, Thanks so much for visiting. I did buy another one. I was heartbroken when the first one broke. The little more expensive ones seem to last longer:)

I have seen these ads for the retractable lightweight garden hoses and have been tempted to purchase them. After reading this I think I will stick with our tried and true regular versions. Thanks for writing this!

Patricia, I bought another. It seems to be holding up. I love the hose. It is so easy to manipulate.

O I am sorry. but I am also thankful. thankful that you shared this. I have continued to spy these each time I venture out into almost any story and long for one.

But now, no, I will put my 20 dollars into another hose for sure.

Voted up and shared (so others may know)

I just had one burst. Both the nylon covering and the inner hose have about a 4" split. Looked at the receipt and it was 3 months and 2 days ago. Luckily it was purchased locally and the store said bring it back for exchange or refund.

I spotted your hub on your gardening hose experience because we purchased a spiral retractable hose, which felt like just the right thing for us. 20 meters. No more knotted, twisted and tangled hose problems that made our watering a nightmare. It was quite an expense, around $80.- Well after Robin had installed it onto the wall according to the instructions, once the hose was out there was no way it would retract, no matter how we tried. I phoned the shop the next morning to complain and their reply was. "No, a 20 meter hose does not work, it's to long!" We got our money back but what a disappointment, not to mention the false advertising, video and all!

I'm surprised you didn't have any recourse with Amazon. They are usually very good at taking care of customer's problems. When I see those ads on TV for this hose, I had always been wondering how sturdy it could be. Now I know.

justmesuzanne, I was thinking about buying a new one. I hate heavy old hoses. Their quality has got to get better.

I got three of these at the beginning of last summer. They were fun at first, but they can't stand up to daily heavy use. They are worthless now, and I have gone back to my old leaky regular hoses. Good info! Voted up and useful! :)

I own four of these hoses in the professional grade. I learned that I must always read the reviews before I purchase something. Both of my hose wheels are in the sun. I spent allot of money to have them solidly attached to my stone home. I waited for months for these hoses and then I read the reviews and instructions and I cannot put them in the direct sun!

Like all tools, I need to be trained but I didn't think I needed a learning curve for a hose.

Having stated all the negatives I must say I would buy them again. I love and my shoulders LOVE the lightweight. In comparison to the heavy duty hoses and the expensive sprinkler systems, for this gardener, these hoses are great value but like any tool you must know how to use it.

Right after these hoses came out FrontGate stopped showcasing their lightweight hoses. Next season I plan on phoning them early and adding their lightweight hoses to my collection so that I may be able to use the two sunny hose wheels mounted on the stone walls of my home.

      Very helpful information.

I recently saw a hose like that, and glad I didn't buy it now that I know about it failing. I'm glad nobody got hurt. I would call the manufacturer directly and see if they can provide some sort of reimbursement or replacement.

We bought our first one and it had a leak right away took it back got another one. This one is working great so far. We have had it at least a month. We really like it because it is so easy to pull on our deck and water the flowers there. Thanks for explaining the problems you had. Voted up.

tilntitan, Delighted you stopped, I still have to replace the thing. What I am using at that spigot is a ,not quite long enough, hose held together with clamps. If I can find another one with a warrantee I will buy it and let you know.

There goes that bubble! I've been watching and wanting that hose for a while but the thought of losing it before I even get it just means, no dice. Guess I have to stick with my big, heavy, twenty year old hose.

Thanks for the information and making it into a charming read!

Voted up, useful, and interesting +++

On TV, that hose looks like such a GREAT invention. Too bad it was made to be obsolete in just a few months.

      BTW, H.J. is a cutie.

Whoa. Glad that I read this. I was planning on getting two at the end of the week. Maybe I will just stick with regular water hoses. Right now, investing in water hoses is a bit of a frivolity anyway, so I don't want to spend the money and then only have a month or two to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing your experience.
