Best Affordable Vacuum Cleaners for 2013

You should decide what kinds of cleaning tools you want in a vacuum. I personally like a small nozzle for tight spaces; these are great to get in between couch cushions, or corners. The brush accessory is great for collecting dust off of draperies. Another feature that I must have is a carpet height adjustment. I will often vacuum my dining room and kitchen floors along with the living rooms, so having a bare floor option is important to me.

There are vacuums that offer a headlight, a full container indicator, retractable cords and self-propelling technology. You will pay more for more features, as with anything, so keep in mind what your? must haves? are when you are shopping.

Choosing a Cheap Quality Vacuum Cleaner

Sometimes it seems that there are as many vacuums on the market as there are homes on the planet. I know that when I shop for a new vacuum, my eyes tend to glaze over a little with all the choices available. If you understand the basics of a vacuum, you will be able to better know the differences between them, and what they can do.

The different kinds of vacuums available for purchase include:

Stick or broom vacuum cleaners. These are very lightweight but often do not provide a lot of sucking power.

Canister vacuums will give you the convenience of a stick vacuum but are stronger at sucking up dirt. These can often be more convenient for use on stairs.

Handheld vacuum cleaners are great to have on hand for small messes and occasional use.

Upright vacuums will give you the most in power but are also heavier and more cumbersome to carry around. When it comes to upright vacuums, you need to decide if you want bags versus a bag less unit. Bags will hold more dirt but often can release a lot of dust when changing. You save money by going with a bag less vacuum since there are no bags to purchase every month. The flipside of this is that you often do need to replace the filters that bag less vacuums use.

Best Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

I love this Hoover Linx Cordless Stick Vacuum Cleaner because it is so small and lightweight, yet does such a great job at picking up dirt. It is made with Hoover's WindTunnel technology. The vacuum is run on a LiNX lithium ion battery and will let you know when it's time to recharge; there are no cords to deal with, step over, or trip on.

The battery life is not as long as I would like but you can always opt to buy a second battery from Hoover for a longer life. This stick vacuum is a favorite of mine since it can clean so well in tight spaces like under beds and behind my couch. You have the option to vacuum your hard flooring, area rugs and carpeting with easy switch on the handle to transition between these surfaces. As if the vacuum wasn't convenient enough, to release the dirt, you simply push the button to open the dirt cup and it falls out into the garbage can.

This machine features an 11 inch wide nozzle, automatic height adjustment, bristles to help clean along edges and in corners and soft wheels that won't mark up your floor. Because it has a low profile base, and reclining handle, it fits easily under furniture. The only thing I noted that I didn't like is that it is hard to use on the stairs but I manage OK.

Best New Canister Vacuum Cleaner 2013

If you're on a tight budget, consider this BISSELL Zing Bag less Canister Vacuum. At only 10 pounds, this vacuum is very easy to carry around the house for all your vacuuming needs. It can clean any kind of flooring with ease and features an extension wand. With no bags, you simply open the canister and dump into the garbage.

The cord could be a little longer in my opinion, but the retractable feature is very nice. I love that this vacuum offers suction control so you can turn it down, or up, according to the item you are vacuuming. This vacuum does not come with many attachments however and it is a bit louder than other vacuums I've tried. All the filters are washable for more convenience. For the size of this vacuum, the sucking power it has is really good. This vacuum works very well on hardwood floors which are mainly what I use it for. If you need a vacuum like this for occasional jobs, it makes a great choice.

Best Cheap Vacuums Under $100

Best Upright Vacuum Cleaner

My favorite in this category is the Hoover WindTunnel T-Series Rewind Upright Vacuum. For a vacuum priced at what this one is, I'm shocked at the results I get from it. This bag less vacuum uses cyclonic technology which is something the manufacturer says will keep it from losing suction over time. I love the foot activated auto-cord rewind since bending over repeatedly is not good for my back. The cord clip on the vacuum also helps keep you from having to bend over and move the cord out of your way, or hold it in your hand while vacuuming.

It features an 8 foot hose that comes with 12" extension wand, a crevice tool, and upholstery/dusting brush. Being 16.5 pounds means that it isn't too heavy to cart around your house on cleaning day. To cut down on allergens, it comes with a permanent HEPA filter and a rinse clean filter as well. I like that it comes with a system check indicator to let you know when the filter needs to be cleaned. This is a godsend because I forget to clean my vacuum filters otherwise.

For a good vacuum that will not break the bank, this Shark Navigator Upright Bag less Vacuum makes a great choice; it is highly rated and very popular. Complete with accessories that include a wand to give you 12 feet of cleaning reach, a dusting brush, a crevice tool, a 24 inch crevice tool, and a turbo brush for pet hair, you are set for any kind of cleaning. This vacuum is a joy to push around since it rolls so smoothly.

I love that it comes with a 30 foot power cord so I can get much more done before having to unplug and replug the cord. This is a great option for those that live in homes with large spaces, or a lot of square footage. Weighing only 15 pounds, it is one of the lightest upright vacuums you can find. I have tiled floors with area rugs, as well as carpeted floors and this vacuum handles all of it quite well with the electronic brush roll shut off that stops the roll from moving for better bare floor vacuuming. Be advised that this vacuum does not include a HEPA filter.

Top Rated Vacuum Cleaner for Home 2013

Check out this Shark Navigator Lift-Away Vacuum that has the power of an upright, but the slim design of a stick vacuum. This machine boasts Featherweight technology to be a super light vacuum to use. It can be used easily on bare floors or carpet as you see fit. With the bag less canister, you need not worry about buying bags to replace every month or so.

The vacuum will work best if you can wash the filters about once every month. With swivel steering, it can be easy to navigate through your home. I love that it comes with pet tools and an above floor cleaning attachment. I was also pleasantly surprised at how quiet this vacuum runs as well. Be advised that there is no height adjustment with this vacuum but it has good enough suction power to get things off bare floors and will work just as well on most sizes of carpet.

If you have a smaller home, I would recommend this vacuum as well since the cord is a bit short for large spaces. One of the best features is that the canister can be removed to better vacuum stairs and awkward places. If you, or someone in your home, suffers from allergies, this vacuum will really help reduce the amount of dust and dander that gets kicked up from other vacuums.
