Best Reel Mower

Updated on June 24, 2010

The top rated reel mower, Scotts 2000-20 20-Inch Classic Push Reel Lawn Mower provides a terrific cut, is low maintenance and has the best value for a reel mower

Reel mowers are one of the most economical as well as ecological ways to mow your lawn. They're eco friendly in that they don't use gasoline and don't produce pollution (lawn mowers and gasoline spills account for a significant amount of pollution every summer). Also because they don't use gas you don't have to pay the ever-increasing dollars per gallon, saving you tons of money over the summer (by one account it was over $168). And because there are fewer moving parts, maintaining a reel mower is simple; all you have to do is use a reel mower sharpening kit to keep the blades sharp and they run like a dream (and the kit only costs about $15 and is super easy to use).

But you already know all that. You're looking to buy the best reel mower out there knowing that finding the right reel mower means easier mowing and less hassle. It also means less overall cost of ownership because some of the quality reel mowers out there will last for many years to come. Below are my picks for the best reel mowers and which application they're best suited for. The more you research about reel mowers, the more you'll find that each one has some pros and cons and that some of the things that make a reel mower bad will not be a big deal if you're in a different situation. So without further ado: the best reel mowers.

Scotts Reel Mower

The Scotts company in synonymous with lawn care as they've been producing quality lawncare products for over 140 years.  Their reel lawn mowers are no different.  By far the most popular model is the Scotss 2000-20 20" reel mower.  It offers a 20" cutting width that is better than just about every reel mower on the market.  The blades are easily adjusted from 1 to 3 inches to keep the lawn at just the right height.  This lawn green reel lawnmower is lightweight but very durable which makes maneuvering around obstacles a breeze.  As far as cutting goes: when the conditions are right absolutely nothing cuts better; the mower is easy to push the grass just falls off the blade.  However, you have to do a couple of things to make this happen.  The first thing you have to do is keep the blades sharp.  As I mentioned above, using a reel mower sharpening kit will keep the blades extra fine and using the kit couldn't be easier.  The other thing you'll want to make sure to do is to mow regularly.  The way the reel mower is designed, the blade shield will bend tall grass and weeds over and some of them won't get cut.

The Scotts 2000-20 20" reel mower is by far the best value as far as reel mowers go.  You get a wider cutting area, easy maintenance, and trouble free mowing (provided you keep everything maintained).  The one downside is that push mower tends to be a little more expensive than other reel mowers.  But this is truly an instance where you get what you paid for.

American Lawn Mower Company 14-Inch Deluxe Hand Reel Mower

The American Lawn Mower Company has two of the best reel mowers and it shows by the number of models you’ll see being sold.  This is most likely because their 14-inch deluxe hand reel mower is the cheapest reel mower you'll find anywhere.  This mower is another lightweight reel mower that's easy to move around.  The 14-inch width means you'll be making more passes but this size tends to work perfectly for small lawns like those of a townhouse or condominium.  One issue that has popped up across the internet is that on some units the aluminum frame has bent.

This is a good cheap reel mower that will easily mow a small yard.  So if you're on a budget and need a lawnmower you'll be happy to use the American Lawn mower Company 14-inch Deluxe Reel Mower.

American Lawn Mower Company 16-Inch Full Feature Reel Lawn Mower With T-Style Handle

This reel mower is the previous mower's bigger brother.  The 16-inch full feature mower improves upon the 14-inch mower by providing a cast iron frame.  This adds a lot of weight to the machine but not necessarily in a bad way.  The extra weight provides a more even cut and prevents the mower from bouncing around.  This mower is made in America (which is important to some people) and has a much better construction than the 14in mower which allows it to cut thicker grass.  One thing to watch out for is that there is a plastic retaining clip that holds the roller assembly together.  If you have to move or remove the clips they have the tendency to break.  While this isn't a big deal because you shouldn't need to touch them, it is something to look out for.

A high-quality, well constructed mower that is a good choice for small to medium lawns.  This mower is a close second to the Scotts reel mower.
