Planning a kitchen...Bridgewood cabinets reviews

Updated on October 13, 2014

Bridgewood cabinets vs Advantage cabinets

The business of factory custom (high end) cabinets has gotten a little confusing. All the best kitchen cabinets brands like Woodmode and Bridgewood have created a new 'sister' cabinet product to compete in the hugely popular semi-custom market.

Woodmode calls their step-down 'Brookhaven' cabinets....

Bridgewood calls their step-down product "Advantage". But, with Advantage cabinets it is only a step-down in price, not in quality !!

So, we're only going to talk about Bridgewood and their companion Advantage series cabinets here. I can speak frankly, I have personally sold both for many years, and still do, this article is based primarily on that experience.

Be aware that many dealers simply use the Bridgewood name in reference to either product and that eighty percent of all kitchens built at Bridgewood are from their Advantage cabinets catalogue.

Factory Fall Promo

As of October 15th, Bridgewood begins their fall promotion involving cherry cabinets and no up-charge for custom widths...This is a very lucrative promo when cabinets at this price point can be built to the 1/8" vs 3" increments. Check out my profile page, you will find my contact info there. I can better inform you on the details.

Bridgewood's full custom cabinets

Bridgewood cabinets are made right smack in the middle of America... Chanute KS.

Bridgewood produces their full custom line like all the others do...from scratch, made to very exact specifications that allow for a one-of-a-kind kitchen. There are so many possibilities and options using a full custom cabinet, it can be overwhelming and consumer unfriendly...That's where a true kitchen pro comes in.

One essential detail that makes custom cabinets be custom is the finish option.

I'll use painted cabinets for an example. Instead of 3-5 standard paint choices for color, imagine the entire Sherwin Williams color spectrum... Thousands of colors. If you have a piece of stained furniture you want to match..well, let them borrow a drawer front...it will happen.

Also, as far as designing with full custom, if you need a special piece build for a hutch or island, get them a good drawing, they will build it. Need an odd base cabinet 19 1/4" wide with 5 drawers and an 8" high toe space? No problem. So that's what makes custom a step above semi-custom...and why true Kitchen Design pros love it.

Now, with the Advantage cabinets (the step-down line), you can't quite do all that, but you do get the best all wood cabinet with your choice of 15 door styles at a terrific price point. In fact I would consider the Advantage line of cabinets to be perhaps the best dollar value in the semi-custom cabinet market.

The Advantage cabinets advantage

To offer their Advantage semi-custom cabinets, Bridgewood decided to do things a little different than others. Keep the quality way up, and make all 15 styles the same price. In other words...Keep it simple.

  • Advantage features only the best, all wood cabinet box, no particle board
  • Advantage cabinets offers 15 door styles all at one price point...simple.
  • All 15 doors available in 5 wood species: maple, oak, hickory, knotty hickory, cherry & rustic cherry
  • Each wood species available in 20+ stain, glazed and painted finishes.
  • Each door style available in full overlay or standard overlay (n/c)
  • Every kitchen available framed or frameless cabinets (n/c)
  • Soft close and full-extension dovetailed drawers are standard (n/c)
  • VERY IMPORTANT...it is also possible within the Advantage product to order a cabinet in any width other than 3" increments (to a 1/4" increment). This is a huge difference when compared to other semi-custom cabinets and completely eliminates the need for any fillers. (See factory promotions below)

What all this means is that just one price will cover almost everything offered. No worries about missing some upgrade. The only add-ons will be cherry +10%. Glazing +10%. That's about it. So one cabinet quote (within 10%) will cover almost anything within the Advantage cabinets catalogue. 15 cabinet door styles x 5 wood species x 20 finishes = a lot of choices for one price !!

As a kitchen designer, it is wonderful to do a design your kitchen and create one price..."Here's your price ma'am, pick anything you like". As a consumer, it allows for a much easier means of decision making and price shopping.

Rustic hickory cabinets, Charming !!

The kitchen above and right is with Advantage knotty hickory cabinets. This is a fabulous choice of wood species for a rustic, country style kitchen. Unfortunately, this owner elected to keep their existing refrig and range, it could have been much better. Oh well.

Hickory is the hardest, most dense wood used for cabinet making. Hickory is popular because of the erratic woodgrain. One single piece of hickory wood can show 2-3 different colors of wood.

It is also available without the knots, but I prefer the knotty look with hickory...It's just very natural.

Use Bridgewood cabinets for other rooms

Bridgewood Cabinets (and Advantage) both produce the base cabinets, wood tops and bookcases to create a variety of other room applications. Shown at right is a corner entertainment center.

All cabinets and other components made @ Bridgewood can be ordered to the 1/4" increment. That makes for a 'no filler' installation of any room, assuming a qualified designer.

Great factory promotions

Factory promotions

Bridgewood is known to run terrific factory promotions on their Advantage cabinet line. Sometimes these promotions involve free wood species upgrade (like cherry for oak pricing), sometimes it's no charge for 'in-between' cabinet widths.

Be certain your Bridgewood designer is taking advantage of this exceptional opportunity and passing those savings on to you the consumer. As a lifetime kitchen designer, I can assure you a much better fit and finished kitchen using custom widths...No excuse for fillers and missed center lines.

Update Sept 15: Bridgewood will be running a lucrative buyers incentive beginning in October 2014. I am quite certain that this will mean an even better value using cherry cabinets. If you are a cherry cabinet lover it may be worth the wait. Contact me directly (profile page) to keep you informed on the details of this sale.

Bridgewood cabinets, a few minor issues

When Bridgewood cabinets gets busy, the lead times go way up for both Bridgewood and Advantage cabinets. For example, what was a 5 week delivery could quickly change to 8 weeks during the busiest seasons. Your dealer will inform you on the current lead times. Bridgewood is very accurate about their lead times, so you can plan accordingly.

Pull-out waste cabinets are a must in every kitchen. All cabinet makers outsource the hardware mechanism to build their pull-out waste cabinets. I wish Bridgewood had a more heavy duty option for the slide system on that often used cabinet. Inquire with your dealer on a heavy duty aftermarket slide system for the trash cabinet. If it's not $150 or more, it's probably no better than the factory installed slides.

Lastly, like many other brands, the wall cabinets will arrive with the adjustable shelves pre-installed with small plastic shipping clamps to avoid loss or damage. That is not a user friendly means of moving shelves and should be changed out before cabinets are installed, or at least before being used by owner. Just be sure to have your dealer agree to supply the simple adjustable shelf pins.

Overall, I am thrilled with the quality and value of both Bridgewood and Advantage kitchens, and I have dozens of very happy builders and clients to back that up. You will be also.

'Easton' cabinet doors, Advantage best price

Important note on Advantage Easton door style...The doors above are called Easton.

This is a common high end door style which usually dictates a premium price within other cabinet brands. But, because all 15 doors offered using Advantage cabinets are the same low price, you will find this door style to a particularly good value, especially for all wood cherry kitchens!.
