The Garden Hose Reel: Making Lawn and Garden Work Easier

Updated on September 27, 2011

Do You Need a Garden Hose Reel?

If you have landscape plants or a garden, then you know that providing adequate water is one of the most important things for those plants to thrive. However, leaving garden hoses lying around can be unsightly and create a tripping hazard. Having to wind up a garden hose before mowing can take time and in winter when you need to store the hose, it can be difficult to keep it compact.

A good garden hose reel can make all of this easier. They can help protect your hoses from sun damage, allow you to keep them outdoors where you need them without having them strung all over your yard, deck, or patio, and in many instances, make storage easier as well.

On this page you can get just a few tips for choosing the right garden hose reel and see some of the ones that current customers seem to love.

Buying Tips

If you are shopping for a garden hose reel there are a few things to think about before you make your choice.

  • Construction
Plastic garden hose reels offer weather and rust resistance as well as affordability. However, many of them won't stand up to heavy use for more than a season. Metal and cast aluminum is often the more durable choice. While metal reels will cost more, in general, they may save money in the long term as they won't need replaced nearly as often.

Brass fixtures are ideal for rust resistance and durability, while O-rings are necessary for reducing leakage. If the device is floor mounted or a cart, then it's weight and stability will be important to consider. You don't want the reel to tip as you are trying to wind or unwind the hose.
  • Capacity
You will want to know where you will mount the garden hose reel and how far you will need your hose to reach. Reels will have a set capacity as far as how much hose they can hold.

  • Ease of Use
The rewind mechanism matters a great deal because rewinding is often the most labor intensive part of the task. Certainly automatic rewind can be a great feature. A hose guide can also make rewinding more simple.

If you have more than one area where you need a hose but only want to purchase one, a portable reel will be important. A cart with wheels is often the best choice in these instances, although there are some lightweight ones that can be carried from one point to another without too much effort.

  • Design
The most common types of garden hose reels are deck or floor models, carts, and wall mounted models. Wall mounted models offer the advantage of no tipping or falling over but they offer no flexibility in moving them from one place to another and do requre some labor to install.

Floor models don't require installation and can be portable if they aren't too heavy or have an extremely long hose attached. If their base of support isn't good or they are too lightweight, they do present a risk of tipping over.

Carts offer portability. However, they tend to be rather large and require more space for storage. Again a wide base of support and heavy duty construction can help eliminate any risk of tipping.

Of course there are also devices that mount in the ground which can be quite sturdy when mounted in concrete/cement.
