Cactus Burglar Alarm

Updated on July 3, 2011

Cactus Burglar Alarm

I went on a trip to Florida to visit a friend who I've known for over 40 years. When I pulled up to her driveway I saw huge cactus plants that reached up to her windowsills. I thought it was a bit odd, until she told me why they were there.

My friend told me that her neighborhood was changing, and she was happy that her husband had planted cactus under the windows years earlier, just in case the neighborhood changed. The purpose of having the cactus planted under all her first floor windows, was to keep her family safe at night so they would not have to worry about burglars coming in through those windows.

When we bought our house, I kept the "Cactus Burglar Alarm," in mind. A year ago, a friend of mine gave me the cactus that you see in the picture below. Not only do I now have a "Cactus Burglar Alarm," but I have a FREE "Cactus Burglar Alarm."

I don't really want to hear a human alarm go off in the middle of the night, however, I too now sleep better, just knowing that my "Cactus Burglar Alarm," is always set and ready to go.

If you live in an apartment you can also have a "Cactus Burglar Alarm"... just put some small cactus plants on the inside of your window, on the window sill. Or you can do what we did when we lived in an apartment. We had one huge Cactus growing in a beautiful pot that we put on a stand that fit just under the windowsill. You'll feel much safer... when you are... "Home Alone."

Until we meet again... Francesca27

Great idea and there's such a wide variety of cactus plants. We have several barberry bushes planted in an area next to the house that would make a good "hiding place." They're covered with small leaves and thorns and turn a beautiful red in the Fall.

Good idea. I have used miniature rose bushes in the past, to create a summer cottage look to my home/teenage hangout deterrent.

I like the idea, but your photo is too funny! Let's hope the "neighborhood doesn't change" for at least ten years. Otherwise those cacti will merely annoy barefoot theves. Sabra grows fast in Florida, but above the Mason-Dixon lne, not so much.

What a great idea and plus it's not too costly.
