Cheap and Attractive Rain Barrels

Updated on August 30, 2010

Many people enjoy the look of rain barrels, such as the Algreen Cascata Water Collection System , which doubles as a planter to give the rain barrel extra appeal.

Attractive rain barrels are the perfect addition to any garden as they provide an elegant statement about water conservation. Using rain barrels is a great way to gather and conserve water during times of heavy rain and preserve that water for use on drier days. Using rain barrels in arid climates where droughts are frequent can be a perfect solution to maintaining a healthy lawn and garden. The biggest problem with most water barrels is that they are commonly made from bright blue polypropylene drums that don’t consider any sort of aesthetics or design purposes. Recently there have been numerous rain barrels that are both attractive and easy to use and that are now available over the internet. Checking out a few rain barrel stores on the internet will give you some ideas of what is available. The following tips will help you in deciding what type of attractive rain barrel you should purchase as well as providing a few tips on getting the lowest price.

The first thing you’ll want to check out is the location of your rain barrel.  To get the most from a water barrel you’ll want to locate it next to a roof or some other means of collecting vast amounts of water.  Locating the rain barrel near a downspout is the easiest way to collect all this water as the surface area of the roof will collect a lot of the rain and the gutter system already concentrates the water for you.  Some rain barrel kits will come with a downspout adapter; however, you’ll want to double check that when ordering.  Getting an rain barrel adapter for the downspout is the easiest way to set up a rain barrel and will make that task so much easier.  If your rainbarrel doesn’t come with an adapter I would recommend purchasing one at the same time as you order the rain barrel so you can save on shipping.  Stores like Amazon have a large selection of rain barrels as well as downspout adapters so you can get one that matches your current set up.  I can tell you how long I had to search to find a brown rain barrel adapter.

The next thing you should consider is how much water that you think you’ll need.  Most people will use attractive rainbarrels for watering their flower gardens or perhaps vegetable gardens and, depending on the size of the garden, you may need to order more than one.  While there are a lot of factors that will affect how much water you need, a good rule of thumb is that a 50 gallon rain barrel will work for a 10’ x 20’ garden assuming it rains twice a week and there’s enough rain to keep the barrel mostly full.

Having picked out a location and size now you’ll know what looks best in that area.  Because most locations for rain barrels are next to a house, getting a modern, contemporary rain barrel would fit in better for most houses.  The exception of course is if you’re house is wood sided or otherwise earth toned as there are many earth tone water barrels that provide a more natural look.  These are great because they’ll blend in more with the vegetation and look more attractive and aesthetically pleasing.

One more consideration when buying an attractive rain barrel is the features that the ran barrel provides.  Many modern rain barrels have some accessories such as spigots and drains towards the bottom that make using them as easy as hooking up a garden hose.  There are other features such as linking options and mosquito screens that will make using your water barrel that much easier.  While they don’t add much to the aesthetic appeal, these features make using cheap water barrels that much easier.

Buying Cheap Rain Barrels

There a numerous places online that you can buy a cheap attractive rain barrel.  There are many online retailers that have great prices on their advertised deals.  The one thing that you have to be careful of when purchasing a rain barrel online is to check out the shipping as that’s usually a deal breaker.  The best place I’ve found to buy cheap attractive rain barrels is on Amazon.com.  They offer a great selection and have pretty good prices and free shipping to top it all off.  With a little bit of research you’ll be able to easily find attractive rain barrels.
