Choosing a Smoothie Blender - What to Look For
Smoothies - A Healthy Treat
For many people focused on their health, smoothies have become a part of their everyday diet. Thanks to their taste, nutritional benefits and ease of preparation, smoothies are a great, healthy alternative to a meal whenever time is an issue.
Since smoothies from boutique smoothie shops can cost $5-$10, many people find it easier and much more cost effective to blend their own smoothies at home. While you can find thousands of different smoothie recipes spread across the internet, the type of blender that you use is what will make the difference between a home concoction and a restaurant-quality smoothie.
Not all blenders are created equal – there are many different characteristics which will determine the quality of your drinks.
Quality is Important
First of all, you want a strong, sturdy smoothie blender. Look at the commercial-grade ones they’re using at the smoothie shop. They look solid and powerful, and when it comes to smoothies, this normally means a higher quality blend.
Another benefit of having a sturdy blender is that they are less likely to be tipped over, making both a mess and potentially breaking the pitcher or the unit base.
Most home smoothie blenders operate with a power supply of 500 watts. This is on the low end of the spectrum, and for a quality machine you should aim to get a more powerful unit.
For top-notch smoothies, stick with at least 700 watts, although 1000+ watts would be best. Some high-end smoothie blenders will even top 1500 watts of power – the Blendtec Total Blender Classic boasts an impressive 1,560 watts.
The more power that a smoothie blender has, the more precise the blend will be. It will help eliminate chunks of ice or fruit that many less-powerful blenders leave un-mixed.
Plastic or Glass?
Another common question many people ask is about the pitcher. Is it better to buy a smoothie blender with a glass pitcher or a plastic one?
While they both have their advantages – plastic being less likely to break if it is accidentally dropped – glass is normally considered the best way to go. Glass pitchers are more scratch-resistant and will last longer than plastic pitchers that lose quality through daily use.
Another benefit of purchasing a smoothie blender with a glass pitcher is that it is less likely to stain and will be easier to clean. Many fruits and berries that you will use to make your smoothies can cause staining on the insides of a plastic pitcher if there are scratches or if it is not thoroughly washed immediately.
Glass on the other hand, cleans quite easily and is resistant to the staining of the fruits’ juices.
Choosing a Smooth Blender that Will Last
Sometimes through the normal hustle and bustle of daily life, pieces of your blender can get lost or broken (such as the cap or pitcher). By purchasing a high-quality brand name smoothie blender, you are generally able to easily purchase replacement parts from the manufacturer.
This makes sure that you get the longest life out of your blender, as opposed to cheaper units which would require you to throw them away completely if you lose or break a part.
A quality smoothie blender is a great investment for your family. Smoothies can be great on the way to work or school, perfect after the gym and even a healthy, late-night snack before bed.
