Small Balcony Decorating Ideas

Updated on November 24, 2019

If you have a small apartment patio or balcony, you need to make the most of that additional space. A patio is an extension of your home and you want to create a space that is functional, beautiful and comfortable.

Your patio is also a place where pets can go out and get fresh air, as well as safely get emotional stimulation by watching the view. My cats go out on my balcony every morning to relax and receive energy from the sun.

I use my patio for a place of reflection, meditation and a place where I can entertain friends. There is so much you can do with a patio, even if it isn't that large. Use your imagination to make your apartment patio or balcony the envy of all your friends.

Seating for your Apartment Patio

There are some beautiful patio sets out there, with all types of colors, designs and materials. I live on the second floor and would prefer not to drag wrought iron furniture up two flights, not to mention sitting on it on a hot day.

Teak wood furniture, is perfect for patio use. It is created to endure outside use, all year around. Park benches have been made of this type of wood, as It is durable, beautiful and well suited to handle the elements. Teak wood is also used for decking as well as inside furniture.

Pick patio furniture that you like and that goes with the size and makes of your space. Don't over power the patio with tons of clutter. Fold up chairs can be brought out for extra seating.

It is OK if there is not enough room for a regular patio table, be creative and find a smaller substitute for people to put glasses or plates.

Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug can really help to complete your patio design. They are not too expensive and can handle rain and other bad weather, without developing mold and mildew on them.

You can find outdoor rugs for your patio at most hardware stores like, J C Penny's, WalMart,Target's and Lowes.

There should be not problem in using a small indoor carpet, as an accent to your patio.  You can find area rugs in more colors and you can pick a nice one up at Marshall's for under $20. Make sure to bring it indoors when it is raining, especially if you do not have a covering to your patio deck.

Plants and Flowers

Plants and flowers always add to the beauty of a patio. I love hanging ferns, give a feeling of a Southern plantation on a Summer's day.  Ferns are very attractive as they poetically wave in the gently breezes of the day.

Home Depot should have the hooks you will need to hang ferns or flowering plants. Feel free to replant into attractive pots. This will add brilliance and color to the area. You can also use a plant stand to place two or three plants a corner.

A large palm plant will also give your patio the sense of height and is so beautiful.
Herb Garden

Adding an herb garden will also add color and add a wonderful smell as well as give you a constant source of fresh herbs to cook with. You can use an attractive rectangular pot and plant three of more herb plants to each pot.

Grills and Such

Grills and fire pits are not allowed on apartment patios.  The reasons are obvious for this.  It is a fire hazard.  One spark and catch the building on fire and you will be homeless and responsible for the damage.   Be content to cook inside and bring the food outside for people to eat and enjoy.

Use your style, personality and budget to create an apartment patio that you can be proud of.  You don't have to spend a ton of money, if you are creative.  You can always find wonderful bargains if you search Craigslist classifieds under "patio furniture."  You may find one or two pieces that you like or you may be fortunate to find a whole patio set that suits you!  Good luck!

genna, I have looked around for outdoor rugs. For some reason, they are not too colorful. My patio is covered, so I use a regular rug and bring it in on damp days.
