Cool Ways To Use An Ice Cube Tray

Cool Ideas ~

Recently I have read a few inventive ways to use an ordinary ice cube tray for uses other than plain ice, so it got my creative juices flowing.

Having bought different ice cube trays over the past few years my current favorite is heart shaped and made of flexible silicone which overall I find the easiest to use and clean.

Well the creative juices have been in over-drive coupled with some nifty ideas I found on the internet.

There are many reasons as to why re-purposing an ice cube tray has really sparked my interest and I love nothing more than when I get an idea forming that ends up spiraling into something bigger. Not only are there hundreds of cool ways to use an ice cube tray but there are now just as many fun shapes in molds suitable for children all the way up to Titanic fans, Halloween shapes, Christmas trees and even ones in the shape of a brain!

Always a fan of recycling or re-using, be it in gardening containers or ingredients for homemade skin care products, here are fun, useful and practical ways of utilizing the humble ice cube tray in very cool ways.

Liquid Refreshment Ideas ~

Iced Coffee or Tea:

Great for those long hot days if these are your favorite tipple. Make coffee, tea or herbal teas to your own requirements and pour into the tray sections. Have some leftover percolated coffee? Rather than throw away freeze it for using in a coffee flavor desert or a homemade coffee sugar scrub. Green tea is great for using in a cooling face or body spray.

Fresh Fruit & Juices:

One that is commonly done and a great way of preserving freshly squeezed fruits or using up nearly finished juice. Do you have too many lemons, limes or oranges growing? Squeeze the fresh juice and freeze for later in the year. Freeze blends of different juices or single ones that may be used for smoothies, sauces, deserts or for cool drinks whenever you want. Sodas such as sprite or 7-up are good to freeze to add to juice for a bit of a fizzy kick.

Pureed Fruit:

Nearly frozen pureed fruit make great cooling and refreshing sorbets. Gorgeous way to add seasonal fruits such as summer berries to sparkling water. Puree strawberries, raspberries or blackberries put through a sieve and pour the juice into the cubes of the tray. When frozen, pop into a glass of soda water or sparkling water for a refreshing burst of flavour as the ice melts.

Leftover Wine:

Should you find you are ever left with an unfinished bottle of red or white wine, this is a brilliant idea for when you need that red wine for a stew or shot of white wine for deglazing a pan or to add into a sauce. I have often been left with this problem in red wine as I don’t drink it so this will come in very handy.

Cocktails:

Make up mini versions of your favorite alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails such as mojitos, or pina coladas.

Jello Shots:

One idea that has proven very popular is jello shots, particularly amongst women, made in an ice cube tray. The possibilities are endless but one recipe I came across was blueberry martini jello shot which included vodka, powdered gelatine, blueberries and syrup.

Ice Pops or Popsicles:

Homemade mini ice pops or popsicles are fun and easy to create in your tray. With such a variety of trays available now, the sky is the limit for being creative with shapes and flavors for all occasions. Ideal for children, parties, and summer barbecues, even little bite size pieces of fruit could be added for extra interest and taste.

Nutritious Ideas ~

Baby Food:

Made up too much or want to have small quantities to freeze? Utilizing an ice cube tray is ideal for homemade pureed foods such as applesauce and vegetables. Just defrost before you need it and you will only be defrosting the amount you need so it is cost effective and this will keep for at least a month, requiring little or no packaging. Bananas, avocados, blueberries and apples work well.

Greek Yogurt:

A big fan of natural Greek style yogurt, this is an interesting way of keeping some for those smoothie and ice cream recipes or even that cooling face mask recipe. Add a slice of banana, strawberry or whatever takes your fancy!

Frozen Yogurt:

Easy and quick just freeze your favourite yogurts so you will have your very own healthier option to ice cream whenever you want.

Chocolate Vanilla Milk:

This is a dreamy one for any chocolate lovers who love a cool glass of milk with a twist. It is actually a recipe I came across here that includes dark chocolate, vanilla pod, cocoa powder, sugar and milk. The recipe is gorgeous and definitely worth checking out. A glass of milk with cubes of chocolate treats swirling around, I’m hooked!

Buttermilk:

Ever wondered what to do with the buttermilk left over from that recipe? No problem, freeze it up until you need it as it will last up to 3 months. Don’t forget to measure how much each cube has for future use.

Mini Sweet Treat Ideas ~

Mini Deserts:

All types of mini deserts are doable from rice krispie squares to mini cheesecakes.

Cookie Dough:

Make up your cookie dough and instead of baking all in one batch, pour some into an ice cube tray and whenever you feel like some cookies, remove from freezer, defrost and pop in the oven as normal. Time saving, a great idea for advance party planning or for those days you feel like a sweet treat.

Homemade Chocolates:

All types of homemade candy options including plain chocolate or add a marshmallow “hat” for fun, mini marshmallows added can make a nice variation. Think of your favourites and then think smaller, less calories too.

Peanut Butter Bites:

This idea really will appeal to those with a sweet tooth. Making your own sweets or candy is such an innovative idea and perfect to make to bag up and give as gifts or to sell. Check out this terrific organic recipe for homemade peanut butter cups.

Chocolate & Strawberry Nibbles:

For a romantic night or for dinner party nibbles why not make these easy lush bites. Melt chocolate add a strawberry and push gently into the chocolate and hey presto. You can be creative with shapes of ice tray, mine being heart shaped looks funky done in this. Don’t forget to defrost slightly in advance in the fridge.

Pesto

Tip

Have a supply of Ziploc bags that you can store your ingredients in and write the product, measurement and date it. This frees up the tray and is space saving for your freezer.

Cool Savory Ideas ~

Mold for Sushi:

For that professional touch to your homemade sushi, use the ice cube tray as a mould for perfect shapes every time.

Tomato Sauce:

Freeze up excess sauce or use up all those home grown tomatoes you don’t know what to do with. You will have readymade sauce or tomato base whenever you need.

Pesto:

Homemade pesto or leftover pesto may be stored in the trays and frozen making life easier next time you are cooking Italian and don’t have the ingredients on hand to start from scratch.

Fresh Garlic:

More often than not I end up buying a sock of 3 – 4 garlic bulbs as they are better value but may not get to use all of them. Minced garlic is ideal to freeze until needed saving you time and money. Pop it into the Ziploc bag when frozen and it will last up to a year.

Herbs in Olive Oil:

This idea I love and will work best with herbs rosemary, thyme, sage or oregano fresh from your garden or freshly purchased from your market. Perfect for stews, soups, sauces, potato dishes I have often found myself with small amounts left over from a recipe and this way of preserving them is so useful. Pack the herbs into the section of tray and pour over olive oil. This way will avoid any chance of freezer burn herbs may experience when frozen. When frozen you may transfer them into a Ziploc bag with a note of what it is and a date, freeing up the ice cube tray for something else.

Egg Whites:

Whenever you have some leftover egg whites you can use 1 compartment per egg white so your measure is done whenever you are ready to use in a recipe. Egg white may be used in skin care recipes including face masks or in DIY hair treatments.

Homemade Stock Cubes:

Excellent way of holding onto those juicy flavors from your chicken or beef and whenever you need one you have a perfect amount. These should freeze for up to 2 months.

Canapé Ideas:

Mini versions of sausage rolls, pizza, quiche and whatever inventive ideas you can come up with are great ideas. Herb butters to use are another useful way which I find great for the homemade garlic bread and for adding to mashed potato in my shepherds pie.

I began reading with this question in my head: How is she going to explain the use of ice cube trays and skin care???? I was totally confused, so imagine my surprise to find out this had nothing to do with skin care or hair rinse or personal hygiene. It turned out it was a plethora of ideas that I might actually take advantage of. Well knock me down and call me surprised!!!!!

Love it, Suzie! This one is a keeper....not that all of you hubs aren't keepers, but this one I can actually use. :)

Have a great weekend my friend and tell the Mickster I said howdy.

There are so many great ideas in this Hub! I just hope I can remember them all when I need them. : ) I have frozen broth cubes and pesto, but I've never thought to cover fresh herbs in olive oil and freeze them, and I don't know how many times I've tossed leftover red wine or egg whites. Now I will be freezing them for future use! This is a great complement to your Hubs on DYI face masks and cleansers. Since they spoil quickly, freezing them in ice cubes will mean the perfect amount of fresh product for a couple of days. The mini sweet treats are intriguing...you know I will soon investigate that clever and delicious idea! : ) I have voted this up, up, up, shared and pinned. I hope you're having a relaxing and enjoyable weekend, Suzanne!

I was just reading your comment to Bill (Billybuc), and you said you're in your first heatwave of 22 degrees C. According to a site that converts Celsius to Fehrenheit, it's the same as 71.6 degrees F. You don't actually call that hot, do you? How hot does it get over there? 70s is near perfect, I think!

      Hi kathryn,

LOL I was being smart in the sense we do not get huge temps like so many places, anything in the 30's C would be virtually a non starter!! Our weather can be more like winter with rain in summer and not necessarily hot. To feel the warm sun has been great the past week here. Where we move to is another ball game, temps are in 30's plus to 40C and winter mild.

Hi, Suzie. Wow - what a collection of ideas! The immediate thought I have is in relation to the number of foodstuffs I throw away as I have had to buy too much and how I can definitely save money doing this. Herbs and yoghurt in particular spring to mind. Also, although I have been freezing lemon and lime segments for years, it never occurred to me simply to freeze the juice in this way. Given also that we are actually getting a summer in Scotland this year for the first time since I moved back four years ago, the ideas are timely. Thanks :)

Wow, what a great idea! I'm going to try the coffee the next time I make iced coffee, the wine, for a fun fruity drink and the pureed fruit for my kids! Thanks for the ideas, Suzie!

      Hi Careermommy,

It is amazing the things that can be saved, made in advance or just plain unusual ideas for the cube tray. Great to see a number caught your eye and you are going to use them. Perfect for kids portions, the wine and coffee, have fun and enjoy experimenting! Appreciate your comment!

Really really cool! Where can I find those gem shaped trays? First time I've seen them. Really amazing ideas Suzie. Up and useful, awesome.

      Hi FullOfLoveSites,

Good to see another cool friend! Try ebay for the gem trays or amazon may have them too. So good to know you found these ideas useful there are so many if we think about it. Every time we have something not quite finished, hold back on throwing out and think "could I freeze this for later or another use?" Cheers for the thumbs up!!

Very useful and creative tips. We did the jello shot last weekend during a Jack & Jill Party and it's the first to sold out quickly. Cool stuff! Voting up, pinning and sharing.

      Cheers!

Awesome! I have been using some of these ideas but I did not think of the many, many, many uses of an ice cube tray. I have been freezing wine, juices and herbs with oil but that´s all. Now, I have an idea. Eureka!!! I´ll freeze the young coconut water in this tray. Wow! I got it, lol. I usually have to drink lots of this coconut water when I have somebody to climb my coconut tree. Now I don´t have to drink them all in a day;-)

Thanks for sharing this interesting, informative, useful and very well written hub. Voted up and pinned;-)

      Hi Thelma,

So glad you enjoyed this and found it popped an idea into your head! It is funny how things work! Today I was cutting back plants that have grown throw the railings of my apartment in Dublin. I realised one was a type of Lavender ( tiny blue flowers) so instead of dumping in the communal bin for compost I kept it and now have a mass of fresh lavender I will use in different ways, including freezing in olive oil in my cube tray!! Cheers for your votes and pin my friend, always fantastic to receive!!

      Hi Vishakha,

Cheers for popping by! Mini deserts are so cute and the mind boggles at the different ones you could do! Hope you give the minis a go!

The wine idea! I love it! I never thought to do that as I'm more fond of drinking to the last sip in the bottle! LOL Seriously, that is fantastic. Now I'm planning my next meal that calls for wine. And the mini sweets. So creative!

      Hi CraftytotheCore,

Ice cube trays are so useful for a stack of things but the wine is one that many homes would find useful. I know we prefer white wine so unless a bottle of red is used fully or I needed it for dishes then and there, I tended to chuck it out. The mini deserts would not last in my house that's for sure!! LOL

Cheers for the interest and comment, appreciate it greatly!
