Cow manure As Fertilizer

Updated on November 16, 2011

What is cow manure used for

There is usually a use for everything on the planet and believe it or not - that even goes for good old cow poo !

What is cow manure used for you might well ask ? Yuck - who would even want to go anywhere near cow poo ?

As I spent a few years living out in the country I saw my fair share of cow pats( or known as cow pie in other countries ) & was happy to avoid them where possible .

However many people appreciate that cow manure as fertilizer is an excellent source of nutrients for plant life, giving you healthy plants as well as helping keep the ground moist as well.

Chicken poo or even goat /horse or elephant poo can be used as well however elephant poo could be harder to come across .

Again you could be surprised to find out that another use for cow manure is used as fuel in Idia when the cow manure is dried out!

The Department of Chemical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, USA and the
Center for International Energy and Environmental Policy, The University of Texas at Austin, University Station, C2200 Austin, TX 78712, USA have done research on Cow power: the energy and emissions benefits of converting manure to biogas, this is part of it.

"This report consists of a top-level aggregate analysis of the total potential for converting livestock manure into a domestic renewable fuel source (biogas) that could be used to help states meet renewable portfolio standard requirements and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the US, livestock agriculture produces over one billion tons of manure annually on a renewable basis. Most of this manure is disposed of in lagoons or stored outdoors to decompose "

Cow dung for houses

In other countries cow manure is used to line walls of houses due to the fact that it has insect repellant properties against some insects - sadly not flies tho .

Researchers are looking at a new way of disposing of some of the millions of tons of cow manure produced in the US each year: they are reccommending to use it to build with to replace sawdust when making fibreboard - they would sterilise it first !

Cow dung is also being used as fuel for cooking( Gober ) in some countries ..

Anyone who has eaten chapaties (flat bread) cooked on a gober fire can testify how this fuel enhances their taste.

Make money

If you have animals you can bag your animal poo and sell it to make some quick cash or charge less for people to scoop the poop themselves !

Some turn it into a business !
