Cuisinart Grind & Brew Auto 10 Cup Coffee Maker

Updated on January 26, 2010

Cuisinart steps up to the plate and delivers with their multi-functional Grind and Brew 10 cup. The coffee maker houses a small blade grinder, giving you the freshest coffee you can get from one machine. Providing strength settings, 24-hour programmability, hot plate temperature control, and a self-cleaning option, this drip coffee maker was obviously designed to give the user absolute control over the machine as well as the final product. The Cuisinart Grind and Brew 10-cup is available in either black or white.

Cuisinart Grind & Brew Auto 10 Cup Coffee Maker Controls

The Grind and Brew 10 cup gives you maximum flavor control. It's becoming increasingly common for drip coffee makers to have a 1-4 cup setting that adjusts water flow through coffee to fully extract flavor for smaller pots. Cuisinart has included this feature, but takes it a step further by including the Coffee Bar Flavor System. The knob that controls this feature is located underneath the machine's lid. This is the same lid that leads to the grinder and reservoir. Adjusting this knob relative to the number of cups you are brewing changes the amount of water that actually passes through the coffee, allowing you to control the coffee's strength.

What's more, the hot plate's warming temperature is also adjustable. The buttons that control the 1-4 cup selection and hot plate temperature are located at the base of the machine along with the on/off switch and LED display. The on/off switch is also used as a programming button to set the auto shut off time. If no time is selected, the machine will shut off after 4 hours. On this same control panel you will find the self-clean button and the "Grinder Off" button, which should be pressed if you'd like to use a pre-ground coffee rather than grinding whole beans. An indicator light next to the self-clean button alerts you when the machine needs to be decalcified. The manual says to only press this button after the reservoir has been filled with a 1/3 vinegar, 2/3 water mixture. Pressing this button at any other time will cancel all other settings and begin the cleaning cycle.

Cuisinart Grind & Brew Auto 10 Cup Coffee Maker Performance

If you like control, this machine is for you. If you don't want to have to fiddle with your coffee maker, look elsewhere. Having programmability options and flavor strength and extraction controls is great, but can be a headache if you just want to brew a plain old pot of coffee. First off, the auto shut off is pre-programmed to engage after 4 hours. That is quite a while to leave the heat source running, and it will make a lot of people feel like they need to set it. In addition, the Coffee Bar Flavor System needs to be adjusted every time you make a varying sized pot, whereas with most machines, you just need to indicate if it is 4 cups or under. That being said, the control really does make a difference in the flavor, which is already 10 times better simply because of the fresh ground beans.
