DIY Hiding an Ugly Vent

Updated on May 14, 2015

The Ugly Vent

We have been in our first house for two and a half months now. Slowly, rooms are coming together. I can honestly say, there is not a single moving box inside of our house. (Garage is another story!) Because the house is such a small space with limited places to hang things, we need to get creative with our wall décor.

We have been blessed with this beautiful fireplace...mantel and all!! We can finally hang our christmas stockings on a real mantel! Unfortunately, there is this vent on the front of the fireplace that is a bit of an eyesore. We didn't know what we were going to do with this thing. Even though it is painted white, you can still see it from every angle of the room.

Glue and Magnets

In a brilliant moment of creativity, The wife looked at a piece of "wall art" that we had and thought it would look nice over the fireplace while covering that vent. It is a piece of painted wood with a quote that was used throughout our wedding. It says, "Once in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives you a fairy tale." Cheesey? Maybe, but we have come to love this piece of wood. In another stroke of brilliance, Cheryl thought that we could get some heavy duty magnets, attach them to the back of the piece of wood, then stick it to the vent. Since we are going to be using the fireplace, we needed something that could be removed from that vent easily when a fire is burning. Magnets were the best option.

We went out to our Home Depot and bought a two pack of heavy duty magnets. Then, we gorilla glued them to the back of the piece, hung it up and it came crashing down....because two magnets wasn't enough. Back to Home Depot we went to buy another two pack of magnets...gorilla glued them to the back of the piece, hung it up....and VOILA!

Voila!

Now we have a beautiful fireplace with a hidden ugly vent. Next we will need to work on hiding the wires from our TV.
