All About Duvet Covers
The duvet cover is well know in the U.K. and other parts of the world. But many of us in the United States still do not know what it is. Just go to twitter and search for "what is a duvet cover". You will see a page full of people from the U.S.asking this same exact question. And that is why I decided to create this lens. To help you understand what this popular bed linen is and how you can benefit from it. I will also be sharing tips and answering the most popular questions. Enjoy and thanks for looking.
What Is A Duvet Cover?
We all know that a pillow cover is a cover for a pillow. So a duvet cover must be a cover for a duvet, right? That is correct!
First things first, the word duvet means 'down' in French. You would pronounce it like this: "due-vay".
And what do you know! A duvet is a soft flat bag filled with silk, wool, cotton or artificial fibers and used for isolation. Sounds familiar? Yes, just like a down comforter! So basically, a duvet cover is a cover for a comforter? BINGO!
I always like to say that a duvet is a down comforters French cousin.
The Duvet Covers Job
The duvet covers main job is to protect the comforter. Hey, just like a super hero! All it needs is a red cape. Hee...hee.
The cover is placed over the comforter and sealed with either zippers, buttons or plastic snaps (see image). The closure is usually located at the foot of the duvet cover. This helps keep the comforter from falling out.
Comforters can be very difficult to wash because they are usually too big or bulky to move around in the washer machine. Resulting in a not so clean comforter and/or having to go the the cleaners. But if it is protected by a duvet cover, you wouldn't have to wash it so often. You will only need to wash the duvet cover, which can be washed properly in a washer machine. *Just make sure to read the manufacturers cleaning instructions before washing.
What Size Duvet Cover Should I Get?
Duvet covers come in many sizes, including Twin-XL and California King. Many purchase a duvet cover according to the size of the bed. That is a big mistake because you can end up with a duvet cover that is either too big or too small for your liking. Let's face it, not all sizes have the same measurements. Believe it or not, you can get two completely different bedding sets that are labeled the same size.
It is always best to know the exact measurements of the insert (a.k.a comforter) and the duvet cover. An easy way to do so is placing your comforter on a flat surface and with a measuring tape, measure all four angles. Write down the measurements on a piece of paper and take it with you the next time you go shopping for duvet covers. Compare the measurements of the comforter to the measurements of the duvet cover you are interested in. Whether it be the online or manufacturer packaging description. The comforter should be no more than 2 inches smaller than the duvet cover.
You do not want to get a duvet cover that is too small for your comforter because then it will look too bulky and the bed would look unmade. Although I know a couple of people who like this look. "To each its own", that is what I always say.
What Is The Thread Count
The thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. The thread count is very important because the higher the thread count, the softer and durable the bedding will be. An ideal number is anything higher than 180. It is true that bed sets with a high thread count will cost a lot more than those made of a low thread count but lets look at it this way: You buy a cheap bedding set with a low thread count and it is more likely to get abused and torn within a few washes but, purchase one with a count of over 180, and you will get a high quality item that will last you a life time. It does not take a genius to figure out which one will save you a lot more in the long run. If you can't decide on which type of fabric you should get then I highly recommend a cotton comforter cover set with a thread count of over 180.
The Easiest Way to Put on a Duvet Cover
I was searching through tons of videos trying to find the perfect one that will make it easy for anyone to understand how to properly put on a duvet cover. Many videos showed people putting on the duvet cover the wrong, that is until I came across this video on You Tube. Even though the sound and picture of the video is not that great, I find it to be the best one out of the bunch! How to put on a duvet cover FAST video
The Incorrect Way to Put on a Duvet Cover
This is a funny video I found on You Tube. Many first time duvet cover owners make the same mistake as he has, they attempt to push the comforter inside the duvet cover. Using this method will cause you to lose a lot of time and you will probably end up with a big headache in return. It's still a fun video to watch: How to Look Ridiculous Putting on a Duvet Cover Video
Cotton Duvet Covers
There are many types of comforter covers. There is Silk, Satin and Cotton. But I can honesty say that cotton is the best choice. Cotton is one of the most healthiest materials for bedding. They are washable unlike other materials that need extra care when cleaned. They guarantee a good nights sleep because they are breathable and do absorb moisture which is great, especially for the summer when it is extremely hard to sleep because of the humidity. When purchasing a duvet cover, I always prefer to go with Cotton.
