Dang, How a Youtube Video Keeps my Wife Awake at Night
Don't let the Mrs. Watch This Until you Have a Solution
So much for security
So, we've established that any criminal with an internet connection (AKA any criminal) can figure out how to make or purchase a bump key. And, we've established that having said key will let them walk right into your house. Talk about making you paranoid! Add that to the interviews of past criminals that describe walking right into someone's house in the middle of the night and robbing them while they're sleeping, and you've got a set of pretty disturbing scenarios to play through your head when you should be drifting off to sleep.
That's about how it played out in our house when my wife first saw this video. Now, a good night's sleep is just a dream until we figure out a solution.
Enter the possible solutions
Searching for this stuff really takes time, but I found a couple of good resources while I was looking that may help you out. The best is the 24/7 Home Security site. There is a great page on DIY security tips that had some good ideas, a couple of which I'll link to here for your convenience:
- - at least this wakes us up if somebody opens the front door with a bump key Door stop alarm
- - this wraps around the dead bolt and keeps it from opening from picking or lock bumping. You can even make one if you have a sowing machine and some velcro. Secondary dead bolt lock

Both of these solutions can also be taken with you when you travel. So, they are well worth the investment in my mind. Because you never know who has a key to a hotel room, and those bar and chain locks can be defeated too.
