Decorating Around Dark Green Carpeting

If you have a room in your home that has a dark shade of carpeting, such as dark green, it can sometimes make it challenging to decorate. Even though dark green is not a particularly difficult color to coordinate with, the fact that it is a dark non-neutral shade makes it more challenging than colors such as tan and other neutral shades. Additionally, the use of dark furniture on dark carpeting can create a look that is too oppressive, which can also visually reduce the size of a room. When decorating a room with dark carpeting, it is generally necessary to add lighter shades to the room to counterbalance the darkness of the carpeting.

Good Wall Paint Colors for Dark Green Carpeting

Start by choosing a light neutral shade for your walls. Off-white, cream and pale shades of yellow and beige can work well with dark green. Window treatments should also be kept light, although you can add a touch of color by adding touches of the dark green, such as white mini-blinds combined with window curtain toppers in a cream with dark green pinstripes. This can complement both the light wall colors as well as the dark green carpeting. Using a chair rail in the room, painting the top half of the room off-white and the bottom half a slightly darker shade can also be a good way of blending darker carpeting into the rest of the room's decor.

Choosing Good Furniture Colors

Furniture colors are best kept light in a room with dark green carpeting. Furniture with dark wood or painted finishes tend to blend in visually with the dark carpeting, making the room appear to be smaller than it really is, especially if this is combined with darker wall colors. Instead, choose light woods, light painted finishes, or furniture with a metallic finish or details, all of which will look nice with dark green carpeting.

When choosing upholstered furniture, stick with lighter neutral colors, or fabrics that are light overall but include touches of green in the pattern, such as a small floral pattern or pinstripe. Furniture colors that complement dark green carpeting include ecru, cream, off-white, pale yellow, amber, or a pale color of green that coordinates well with the overall color of the carpeting. Avoid any shades of green even if they are light that clash with the carpet's green color.

Accessories that Work Well with Dark Green Carpeting

Once you have your room painted in a light shade, and have added light colored furniture, you can use accessories to tie the dark green color in with the other light shades. Add a floral arrangement that includes dark greenery and light colored flowers, or brass or white candleholders with dark green candles. Pillows can also be used effectively in accent colors to help blend darker carpet colors into a room, such as adding a combination of cream, dark green, and cream and green patterned pillows. Large metal artwork, such as a palm tree wall art, that contains the same shades of green and blue can also be successful. By introducing small touches of dark green through the use of accessories, you can effectively lighten a room while still complementing the overall color of the carpeting.
