Decorating your Home with Silk Dupioni

Updated on February 17, 2011

Are you trying to decide what types of textiles are perfect for decorating your home? Making this decision isn’t easy. There are many different fabrics and materials to choose from. They each offer a different affect for the design of your home. You need to think about the way that they feel to the touch as well as the way that they look in your space. That’s why it’s important to explore as many different textile options as possible before making any final decisions about various home items to go in your personal space. One of the types of materials that often gets overlooked but should be included in your material options is silk dupioni.

What is Silk Dupioni?

Silk dupioni is a specific type of silk fabric that makes a great choice for many areas of your home. This silk is especially light and soft even in comparison to other types of silk. How does silk dupioni differ from the standard silk that you are used to in home design? It is woven in a different manner. The lightness of the material isn’t the only thing that makes it differ from other types of silk.

Another major difference is the fact that the way the material is woven causes it to change color slightly depending on the light in the room at any given time. Two different colors of silk are woven together to create this color changing effect. This can be a really terrific effect that enhances the design of your home. Of course, it does mean that you need to look carefully at any silk dupioni décor items to make sure that they will always look right in your space, complementing the rest of your home design despite the color changing effects of the material.

Pros and Cons of Silk Dupioni

As with any material, there are pros and cons to using silk dupioni in the home. Some of the things that you should be aware of include:

o   This material is typically designed in vibrant colors. Although this isn’t always the case, it’s something to keep in mind depending on the existing color scheme of your home design.

o   Silk dupioni is a very crisp material that drapes nicely. This makes it a great item for areas of the home where draping is needed including long table covers, curtains and bed skirts. It is basically a wrinkle-free material.

o   Silk dupioni is usually designed to have a formal appearance due in large part to the crispness of the material’s look. You may need to soften this appearance with other home design elements if you don’t want your home to appear too formal. On the other hand, it can be a great material to use when you do want to add some formal elegance to a space.

o   This is a difficult material to clean. Make sure to keep this in mind if you have a home with children and pets.

Options for Adding Silk Dupioni to your Home

Where might you add silk dupioni to the home? Your choices are really endless depending on your own preferences and creativity.  Some of the most common home décor items that people choose to use silk dupioni for include:

o   Curtains. The lightness of silk dupioni makes it a nice choice for curtains particularly in the warmest months of the year. The way that the light filters through the window, changing throughout the day as the sun goes up and down, can create a really interesting effect on the appearance of the material. Usually this is a soft effect that adds a nice warmth to the home despite the lightweight of the material. However, it’s important to bring samples of silk dupioni curtains home and to look at them during different times of the day before committing to using this material in such a large and well-lit part of a room.

o   Bedding. An easier place to consider incorporating silk dupioni into the home is as bedding especially in the master bedroom. The softness of this material makes it a top choice for home décor items that you touch frequently and what do you touch more often than your own bed sheets? You may use silk dupioni for any part of the bedding. As a bed skirt this material can add a nice visual effect to the room particularly with its color-changing features. As a material for throw pillows it can be used to add different colors and patterns to the bedroom space. And as bed sheets it can be a terrific soft material great for warm weather comfort.

o   Table covers. Many people opt to use silk dupioni to improve the way that their tables look, adding some color and soft texture to their tabletops. The crisp draping of this fabric makes it a nice choice as a long cover for tables that are high off of the ground because this option shows off the effect most dramatically. However even small table covers, including old-fashioned doilies, can be made from silk dupioni fabric.

o   Furniture accents. Silk dupioni is typically not used as upholstery because the fabric is too light and too prone to stains and damage. However, it can be used to accent furniture items either within the construct of the item itself or as an added fabric throw tossed over the item. Silk dupioni added to the back of a couch, for example, brings a nice elegant and colorful touch to the design of the piece.

Is silk dupioni not the right choice of fabric for your home? Here’s a look at ten different textiles commonly used in home design. Maybe one of the others will suit you better.

I just love the look and the sound of silk dupioni but the cleaning is what stopped me from using it. It's such an elegant fabric that you want it to look like new all the time.
