If you are thinking of remodeling your kitchen then discount kitchen cabinets may be just the place for you to save a little money. You can buy the cabinets online and then either install them yourself or have your own contractor install them.

Statistically you are going to spend close to half of your remodeling budget on your kitchen cabinets. There are many ways to save money on the purchase of them if you do your research and think outside of the proverbial cabinet box!

Understand the Definitions

In order to get discount cabinets without getting suckered into cheap cabinets you need to understand something about the terms used as well as the construction process.

Stock Kitchen Cabinets-these cabinets are designed to be affordable for nearly everyone. They are made in specific shapes and are in limited styles. You could say that with stock cabinets you make your kitchen fit the cabinets rather than the cabinets fit the kitchen. These are hard to use if you have an oddly shaped or sized kitchen. Sometimes you can save even more by getting these unfinished and staining or painting yourself. They are not very versatile. Most often these will be a wood veneer over particle board.

Semi Custom Kitchen Cabinets are built to order. You will probably have a wider variety of styles and finishes to choose from. The manufacturer can usually adjust the cabinet sizes. They are made with better quality materials and are made to order with the measurements from your kitchen. These are what most people put in their kitchens. These may be wood veneer or they may be hardwood, depending on the manufacturer.

Custom Kitchen Cabinets are just that. They are designed specifically for your kitchen and come in the widest range of possibilities. The materials used are of the highest quality. They are very expensive and can use up well over half of your budget, depending on what you want. These will most often be made form a good quality wood.

Ordering Discount Kitchen Cabinets Online

Budget Kitchen Cabinets has a large selection of all wood cabinets at discount prices. There are eleven door styles to match any d├ęcor and several stains for each. They will ship anywhere in the United States.

Kitchen Cabinet Mart also ships anywhere in the United States. They claim to be 45-60% less expensive than the semi custom companies like Kraftmade. They will also give you a free estimate on what the final price for your dream kitchen will be.

Cabinet Liquidators offers both ready to assemble and assembled discount cabinets. They have a more limited selection and they do use veneer over particle board. As an example, their lowest priced, basic cabinet is quoted as approximately 104.00 a linear foot.

Don't forget about ebay! Not only can you find discounted cabinets but often you can find cabinets that someone bought and doesn't like. You can often get these for your own kitchen for a fraction of the price of what they cost new!

Unfinished Cabinets

Unfinished cabinets are just cabinets that have not been stained or painted. They may be assembled or not, and arrive at your home ready for you to create magic with stain, paint, and brush. You can faux finish them, paint them, stain them or about anything else you can come up with as far as a finish.

As always oak and pine will be the least expensive woods. You don't need a great wood like maple or mahogany if you are just going to paint them. If you want them to be stained, though, and you can afford it buy the more expensive wood. Some sites that have unfinished, all wood cabinets are:

Find Discount Cabinets Locally

Often home improvement stores will carry discount cabinets. Home Depot has assembled and unfinished cabinets in the stores and there are many others. Lowe's is another store that is in most of the United States that carries discounted cabinets.

Check Craig's List often. Like ebay you can often find cabinets that are in great condition that someone no longer wants. If you have patience you may be rewarded with custom cabinets are a stock cabinet price!

Architectural Salvage stores are a great source of all kinds of remodeling necessities. Check the phone book for one in your area.

Habitat for Humanity operates outlet stores. Not only can you find a great deal, the profits go to a great cause! They have all kinds of building materials, including kitchen cabinets. You can check the Habitat for Humanity list to see if there is one near you.

Installing Kitchen Cabinets

A Little More Work for A Lot Less Money

Getting discount cabinets will be more work. You will have to research and make comparisons between companies, look locally, and be patient. By doing these things, though, you can save thousands of dollars on your kitchen remodeling job and use the savings for something else

Sometimes replacing knobs can help, if budgets are tight. There are plenty of fancy knobs in all sizes, styles and colors. We used red ones before and they were a hit :)
