Dog Friendly Sofas
I am a dog lover and I am the type of dog owner that lets her pets use the furniture too...many people believe dogs should not be able to jump on the couch and sleep on the cushions, but I disagree, and if you are like me, you need to make sure your sofa is durable from the claws and teeth.
I have a Border Collie named Rosie (see image below), and some of you may know that Border Collies are very energetic and hyperactive, so when my family wanted to purchase a new sofa this year, we needed to research which sofas would be right for us and what sofas would be able to maintain our busy household.
Finding the right sofa to match the interior is hard enough, but when you add pets into the equation it makes it much harder to decide what sofa to buy. I have looked into fabric and leather sofas and have come to a decision of what material would be better suited with a household with a dog.
Are Fabric Sofas Suitable For Dogs?
Many fabric sofas come with scotch guarding which is used to help minimising stains, but it doesn't protect against claws and teeth which can easily penetrate fabric and ruin the material. Fabric sofas are also hard to clean depending on what fabric your sofa is upholstered in (see my decorating your home with fabric hub page for more information) and although your pet does indeed have claws and teeth, your pets can also get very dirty, very quickly and you don't want to be hiring a dry cleaner every time you forget to wipe your dog down after a long walk.
Fabrics are not the most suitable choice for pets as fabric can lose its colour and pattern when receiving a lot of traffic, and we all know how much dogs move around.
Are Vinyl Sofas Suitable For Dogs?
We decided that a fabric sofa wouldn't be the best option for us, so we carried on looking for different materials and designs, we came across vinyl sofas, which coincidentally is a lot like vinyl flooring in a bathroom or kitchen, very easy to wipe clean but didn't have that comfortable feeling. Although this material would be ideal for a dog, you also need to think about your own comfort, after all it is your sofa.
Are Faux Leather Sofas Suitbale For Dogs?
We found the same results for faux leather as we did for vinyl, it is durable and easy to clean but does not have the comfort as real leather nor does it have the same texture.
Are Leather Sofas Suitable For Dogs?
In the end we decided that we needed a hard wearing material which could endure my family and my dog, but also we needed a family size, comfortable sofa which also looked nice. When researching what material would be best for our needs, we found that leather ticked all the correct boxes, we found that leather is in fact the most hard wearing material used for upholstering sofas.
Leather sofas are very popular and can used in most homes, whatever the décor, once we found that leather would be most durable, we then had to find which style and leather would be good for us.
When researching leather sofas, we found that there were around 7 different qualities of leather and they all had different finishes, meaning we had to decide which leather to invest in.
Picking The Right Leather
The next step is to find the right leather for you, again it is important to find a tough, hard wearing leather which can endure anything. When searching for a sofa we found that a leather with a lot of scarring and inherit markings would be great for us. The texture of leathers which have these type of markings have an old look about them, but in matter of fact the sofa is brand new.
Personally we wanted a soft leather for comfort but also wanted the vintage, worn look to the leather so even if our pet did mark the sofa ever so slightly, it wouldn't be noticeable - perfect for us.
We opted for a vintage leather look corner suite and decorated it with lots of cushions in different shades of browns and creams. Guests love the sofa and there is no trace of Rosie on the sofa, her fur is easy to hover off the couch, dirt is easy to lift and due to the vintage, worn leather, no markings are visible to the eye.
Finding the right sofa for the whole family is hard work, but once you have researched and found what suitable for you, your living room will all come together.
