English Ivy: An Exceptional Groundcover

Updated on July 19, 2012

English Ivy, or Hedera Helix, is an extremely versatile groundcover native to Europe and western Asia. It requires little soil preparation, grows well in shade or sun, and is practically maintenance free. It can grow in nearly any environment, rooting as it spreads along the soil. The roots of ivy are able to grasp and grow from in the tiniest of spaces, making it ideal for planting under trees, along rock ledges, or on steep slopes.

There are a large variety of cultivars, hardy from zone 5 to zone 10.
