My Favorite Palm Trees - 10 Top Palms

Updated on February 22, 2016

I am a big lover of palm trees and here I am going to share some of my favorite palm trees with you.

Kentia Palm

Kentia palms are beautiful palms native to the Lord Howe island of Australia. Now, these plants have reached almost all parts of the world from this small island. A benefit of keeping the kentia palm as an indoor plant is their ability to work as air purifiers.

Parlor Palm

Also known as the Neanthe Bella palm, the parlor palm is a low-light palm. Native to Mexico and Guatemala, these plants can reach a maximum height of 8 feet with average height being about 4 feet.

Sago Palm

The Sago palm is not a palm, but a cycad. I am a big fan of these plants and wherever I see one in good shape and health I just can't resist staring at it for quite some time. Writing this description all those moments in resent past are coming back to me where I just stopped to have a good look at them. Definitely one of my favorite palm trees.

Ponytail Palm

Beautiful plants native to the semi-desert areas of Mexico. The ponytail palm doesn't require much care at all. Just plant it at a sunny location and forget it. They have thin and long leaves that give effect of a ponytail and thus the name ponytail palm. Like the sago palm, this plant is also not a palm.

Chinese Fan Palm

Great for sunny locations of your lawns. The lawn must have some space because they can have a big width. These palms have huge coarse fan-like leaves and thus they are one of the fan palms.

Triangle Palm

Native to the rainforests of Madagascar, the triangle palm is a medium sized palm that works as an excellent air purifier. They can reach to a maximum height of 30 feet and can get about 15 feet wide and need a lot of space.

Coconut Palm

One of the most commonly grown palm trees and also on the commercial level for its fruit. It makes the list of my favorite palms due to its fruit. They can grow really tall and can reach to a maximum height of about 80 to 100 feet and can attain a maximum width of 20 to 30 feet. These trees are best grown in sandy soil.

Date Palm

Like the coconut tree, I love this plant for its fruit. Bunches of dates hanging with tall trees with a plain graceful trunk and huge leaves is one of the most precious scenes in the world. You can grow new date palms from seeds and cuttings.

Pindo Palm

Pindo palms are known for the fruit they bear and this fruit is used in the production of jams and jellies. They can grow 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide.

Bamboo Palm

Also known as reed palms, the bamboo palms are one of my favorite plants. Unlike many other palms, they have delicate stems and soft delicate leaves. They don't grow very tall and are commonly kept as houseplants. Being native to rain forests, they like to be watered regularly and require protection from direct sunlight because they grow as shrubs under the shade of thick forest trees in their native range.

I also love palms but being new in Florida, didn't know my cabbage palm from my ruffled palm. Thanks for the info. Now I won't sound like such an ignoramus when visiting the garden center.
