Five Best Kitchen Microwave Ovens

Updated on November 9, 2010

Microwave ovens are bachelor's (and busy Mom's) best friend. When it comes to fast preparation of meals - nothing betas a microwave.

Nowadays, they are a standard item in most kitchens, and although most people do not actually cook much with them they are so convenient for heating up leftovers and defrosting frozen meals, it really makes sense to own one.

You can cook with them, but by far the best use for them is reheating. A few things do cook better - baked potatoes for example and steamed veggies come out really well - and fast. It takes an hour to cook a potato in a conventional oven compared to a few minutes in a microwave.

This is a selection of the best value for money micro wave ovens on the market.

Panasonic NN-H765WF Full-Size 1-3/5-Cubic-Foot 1250-Watt Microwave Oven, White

This  is a 1250 watt full sized microwave oven that measures 1 3/5 cubic meters. It has a 15 inch diameter turntable plate for even heating and ten power level which includes the Inverter Defrost Feature. The "inverter turbo defrost," lets you defrost frozen meat right out from your fridge for even  defrosting.

It has a cooking instruction guide that scrolls down through step by step cooking instruction in either English, Spanish or French. Panasonic have a great reputation and were one of the original microwave manufacturers. I owned one of the first combo microwave/convection ovens they made. The quality was good then and it is good now.

Big enough for a typical family, and a snip at the price. Great buy.

This is really a great oven. First, with its very contemporary stainless steel design, you know it will go with almost any kitchen decor. Secondly, the features compare well with most more expensive microwave ovens.

It has option for automatic cooking, heating and defrosting. This would really make your cooking and baking much easier. Furthermore, it has a turntable which almost helps it to cook as evenly as some convection ovens . It is only 1 1/5 cubic feet so will  not take up most of your counter top. The only drawback is that it is a fingerprint magnet compared to the white enamel ovens.

Still - a good buy that should last many years.

If you want an inexpensive family size oven that has a lot of functions, this is it. This has 4 defrost options, 6 automatic cook options for up to 6 servings, and 6 reheat options. It is a 1 2/5 cubic foot capacity with a 14 inch diameter turntable - so best described as "mid-size."

Excellent build quality, and interior light and 1100 watts of power make it a great buy at less than $75. Sharp also have a good reputation. This is not as solid as the Panasonic, but I think it is the best available at this price point.

And - of course - the automatic popcorn setting takes care of any microwave popcorn without a thought.

This is designed to fit smaller kitchen and to serve a smaller family. This features 10 power levels, with 8 one touch settings, they are easy to clean too. Great for bachelors and singles who do not cook very often and in small quantities. Will toast, bake and broil also.

Fantastic performance for the price - less than $60. The build quality is high also - much better than you might expect from the price. It is small enough for most kitchens - in fact - it would be hard to find a usable microwave smaller than this one - less than 12 inches front to back.

Once again - the best value for money in this type of oven.

Sanyo Microwave Ovens

This is small but powerful. It has a 9 5/8 inch glass turntable and an electronic keypad, 8 direct access menu keys and a multi stage cooking function. This might be small but it has a memory key function for saving settings you have for favorite recipes.

The only drawback is that it is small - probably too small for family use. But if you are single and living alone, this microwave oven is for you. This is really made for smaller kitchen and countertops of those living alone.

Sanyo is another well known brand, their build quality is impeccable and another good buy at the price.
