What A Nice Garden Says About You!

There are many reasons people choose to decorate their garden. Nothing is better than that feeling of pride you have when you own something that is tranquil and beautiful. However, not everyone is a decorator and may have a hard time finding just the right thing to put in your garden to give it that special feel.

A well tended garden says a lot about you. Everyone wants an attractive home and a garden is an element in a yard that can bring out that pride of ownership that people respect. Below there are ten categories of garden decorations and samples to help with making a garden a place that can be enjoyed.

Fountains & Bird Baths!

Another garden decoration that will not only make your garden look nice, but it will also attract nature are fountains and birdbaths. They come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. There are fountains and birdbaths to fit every garden style. From very simple to big and showy, there is a style that will fit your need.

  • Birdbaths come with a small dish that you must keep filled with water if you want the birds to keep coming back. There are styles where the dish sets directly on the ground or you can have one that has a base that the dish sets on. You can find Birdbaths anywhere from $10.00 for small simple ones up to hundreds of dollars for fancier ones.
  • Fountains have two types of water movement. The first is where the water is pumped up from the bottom and flows naturally from container to container where the water eventually reaches the bottom again and is pumped back to the top. The second type is where the water is pumped from a main dish and sprays directly upward and free falls back to the base to be pumped back to the top.

You will find that fountains will need regular cleaning and also need electricity to run. You will also need to maintain a certain level of water to keep from burning out the pump so you will need to check it frequently. Fountains are more expensive than birdbaths. They can be found for under $100 dollars for very small and can cost up to thousands of dollars for larger more elegant styles.

Outdoor Lighting!

Outdoor lighting is a great way to decorate your garden. There are a number of options available to you. Lighting comes in corded styles and you can also get them affordably in solar options.

The decision is whether you will go with a single fixture or multiple lights. There are pathway lights that run anywhere from $4.00 to $20.00 a lamp depending on your budget. They can be purchased singly or as a kit.

There are also hanging globes or lanterns. This style is corded and can be hung freely between two poles that you place in your garden or on a nearby fence or deck. They come in assorted colors and shapes. These hanging lights can be purchased for $10.00 to $40.00 a box and are about 8 to 10 feet long. They can be easily connected to cover the area you want.

Gazing Balls!

Gazing balls are garden decorations that also come in all sizes, colors, and shapes. They can either be freestanding or you may purchase a stand to set them on.

Some gazing balls can even be put in the water if you have a free standing pond or if you want to place them in a fountain or birdbath. Be sure to check if the ball you purchase can be set in the water. Gazing balls for water use are treated differently than gazing balls that are intended for dry use.

These pretty balls sometimes come on their own picks with allows you to place them directly in the ground or can be added to potted plants to make them more appealing. Gazing balls can be found for as little as a few dollars for the very small ones to about $50.00 for the larger sizes. The stands are an extra cost and they vary in price as well.

Bird feeders are great to add to your backyard to attract more birds. This decoration does, however, take a little thought and research before making a purchase. You will need to find out what type of birds are common in your area before purchasing seed to place in it.

Arches & Trellises!

Arches and trellises are a wonderful way to decorate the entrance of a garden. They can be used with an opening or a little gate.

Often they have plants, small trees or growing vines that are trained to grow along the frame and are very pretty when the plant is blooming.

Depending on what you purchase the plants will stay all year or become dormant in the wintertime and come back in the spring.

Another alternative is to build your own. There are plans available online at different sites and on Amazon that are quite good. Some are free and some you have to buy. You can build an arch or trellis out of metal or wood. They both are good choices depending on what you want to accomplish. Metal will last longer.

Gazebos are wonderful and add to the beauty of your garden. They can be very simple or they can be made into outdoor living areas to enjoy when the weather is nice. A gazebo can be very simple or it can be very fancy depending on your own personal style. They can be decorated simply with plants and give shade in a sunny garden to read or rest.

Gazebos come in many different materials. The most popular are metal framed or wood. You can have a full roof with canvas or open wooded slats. Gazebos can be purchased just about anywhere. You can get a small 10’ x 10’ with a canvas top for about $150.00 or have one build where you will invest a substantial amount of money.

Finally, you may want to put seating areas in your garden. You can purchase outdoor benches made of wood, metal, or stone for as little as $40.00. You can combine these with a gazebo or trellis for a nice place to relax.

Or, you can place them on a walk way near your favorite flowers or plants for a peaceful place to sit.

Swings are another relaxing decoration for your garden. They can come with or without a canopy. They can be placed at the back of your garden for a great view or right in the middle so you can enjoy the entire garden at once.

Simple swings cost about $100.00 but can get as expensive as $200 or $300 or more.
