Sunlight:

Location should be carefully chosen.

Vegetables and most flowers do best with at least 6-8 hours of sun.

Size

It is best to grow only those plants we can care for easily.Keep space for cultivating and weeding.Fast growing vegetables and flowers can be planted more than once per season.

Timing

This varies from year to year.Generally the timing should be after the last average frost date for your area.Soil can be damp but not wet.

Plan Ahead

Flowers and vegetables can be started from transplants to get best results. The seeds can be bought early and planted indoors.

Preparing the Canvas

1.Till Soil:

Using a spade, tiller or fork, the soil should be turned over to 6-12 inches deep.Clumps should be broken and the soil made smooth.

2.Improving Soil:

Peat moss, organic material, compost or sand can be added. This will help break up heavy and clay soils and improve light and sandy soils.

3.Laying out the Plan:

Planting locations can be marked with stakes and rows with strings streched between stakes.

Flower Types

Annuals:

These grow from seed and flower in the first year and then die.

Biennials:

In the first year, they form a small plant.

In the second year, they bloom, then die.

Perennials:

In the first year, they establish themselves from seed. They do not usually flower until the second, then bloom for many years.

Selecting Flowers

Layout:

In layout the height is considered.Taller varieties are planted in the background and dwarf varieties in the foreground.

Blooming Season:

For continuous blooming all round the season, such varieties of flowers should be selectedwhich have early,mid-season and late flowering schedules.

Colors:

Single colored varieties should be chosen for home and surroundings.Color mixtures are an economical way to take advantage of the many colors available.
