Plan Your Work
Before starting, planning is required.Prepare a sketch of your garden and its location. The following things are important to remember while planning our garden:
Location should be carefully chosen.
Vegetables and most flowers do best with at least 6-8 hours of sun.
Run rows North and South,if possible. On slopes, run rows across slopes.
It is best to grow only those plants we can care for easily.Keep space for cultivating and weeding.Fast growing vegetables and flowers can be planted more than once per season.
This varies from year to year.Generally the timing should be after the last average frost date for your area.Soil can be damp but not wet.
Flowers and vegetables can be started from transplants to get best results. The seeds can be bought early and planted indoors.
Preparing the Canvas
Using a spade, tiller or fork, the soil should be turned over to 6-12 inches deep.Clumps should be broken and the soil made smooth.
Peat moss, organic material, compost or sand can be added. This will help break up heavy and clay soils and improve light and sandy soils.
3.Laying out the Plan:
Planting locations can be marked with stakes and rows with strings streched between stakes.
These grow from seed and flower in the first year and then die.
In the first year, they form a small plant.
In the second year, they bloom, then die.
In the first year, they establish themselves from seed. They do not usually flower until the second, then bloom for many years.
In layout the height is considered.Taller varieties are planted in the background and dwarf varieties in the foreground.
For continuous blooming all round the season, such varieties of flowers should be selectedwhich have early,mid-season and late flowering schedules.
Single colored varieties should be chosen for home and surroundings.Color mixtures are an economical way to take advantage of the many colors available.
For a flower palette, colors, textures, sizes and shapes of flower garden are considered.
Here are some suggestions for it:
These flowers can be started indoors and set in garden as transplants for earliest blooming.
These plants can be planted in late Spring,as soon as ground can be worked.
Flowers for semi-shade areas:
Low growing and edging flowers:
Tall and background flowers
Selection of Vegetables
Make your own transplants.Following vegetables require a long growing season. They are best started indoors 6 weeks before planting outdoors.
Plant more than once per season:
Plant in late Spring/early Summer:
When air and soil are thoroughly warm plant these:
Plant in mid summer:
For late season harvest, winter storage plant these:
Plants should be watered well, especially during dry spells. The ground should be thoroughly soaked with water at the time of watering. Most garden plants need 1" of water per week for best results.
Keep soil loose to allow water penetration and remove weeds.
Controlling insects and diseases:
If you see signs of damage, take the samples to your local garden center. They can recommend natural or chemical controls to protect plants.
