Best ideas on making bunk beds for Girls sleepovers

Updated on April 5, 2012

How to make more room when you live in a small place

When you live in a small place, sometimes you just have to be more creative in order to accommodate your needs, especially when you have kids. As the kids grow, their needs of space will change from time to time. It is a challenge when you don't have a lot of space to begin with. However, I find it enjoyable when you do it with your kids together as a family project.

My two daughters asked for bunk beds so they could invite their friends for sleepovers. I never liked bunk bed because they always give me a feeling of over towering the whole room. Besides it didn't make sense to throw away their full size beds.

But with the given space so small (11' x 12'), I had no choice but to consider bunk beds - my version of bunk beds.

Since my kids were small. That's no need to buy a heavy duty bunk bed that could hold up to 150 lbs. So we went to IKEA and bought two tables and table legs with storage. Assembled them ourselves.

They tested them out with tents. They like the tents because they provide more privacy. But the tents also trap the warm air in which is not a good idea during summer time.

So they decided wait until winter before putting up the tents again. They decorated their bunk beds with paper flower and finally finished creating our version of bunk beds. Kid size on top and full size at the bottom.

Mission accomplished! When those two kid size beds are no long needed, I will turn them back to regular tables. :)

Can you please tell me the final measurements of the top portion? I would love to do this for my kids! Twin size mattresses are 75 inches long so two beds together would be 150 inches long which is 12.5 feet. But you said their room is only 11 X 12 so I'm wondering how this bed fit. Did you not use twin size mattresses at the top? Sorry to get so technical I just really am interested in doing this but don't want to get my hopes up if it won't fit.
