Updated on April 21, 2013

If you are a passionate about everything related to strawberries, you are in the right place.

In this article I will explain how to grow strawberries in an efficient manner. In my opinion all of the gardens should have a place where you can grow this delicious, beautiful and nutritious red berry.

Strawberries are very easy to grow and the big advantage of this small fruit is that can grow anywhere in all the temperate regions of the world. You should know that growing strawberries doesn’t require any professional equipment. Strawberries can grow even in a pot or a small container and you can put it either on a deck, porch, patio, or balcony.

The biggest benefit of growing strawberries is the fact that this fruit has a perennial nature which means that you can reap the rewards of your labor for a couple of years after initially planting the strawberries.

It doesn’t matter if you start with seeds or plant, what it matters is the production of the fruits which comes from successfully growing strawberry plants. To have a successful production you have to take in consideration several factors such as: variety of the strawberries, selecting the planting site, preparing your chosen planting site, planting the strawberry plant, creating a favorable environment, harvesting the berries and preserving the strawberry plants during the dormant months.

Before you start growing strawberries you must determine which variety of strawberry plant you chose to grow. If you need help in choosing a certain type of strawberry you can call your local Cooperative Extension. After you decided on your strawberry plant you have to get it.

There are many suppliers, catalogs and nurseries from which you can buy healthy and certified plants.

Choosing the site where you want to plant your strawberries is one of the most important steps in learning how to grow this fruit. In the first place you should know that strawberries love sunlight and need full sun to produce the largest yields. In the second place you should know that strawberries can grow in most soil conditions, but they prefer sandy loam that is deep and must contain an important amount of organic matter.

About planting the strawberries you should know that as soon as the soil is dry and able to be worked, it is the right time to plant your strawberries (April or May). Also it is important for the plant to have at least an inch of water through rainfall or direct supplemental.

It is very good to add fertilizer because it helps the plants to reach their full potential. You can choose a balanced (10-10-10) fertilizer to be added right before planting. You should add about two pounds of fertilizer per 100 square feet.

Now, all I can say is good luck with your planting process and have the most delicious strawberries.
