Hard Water Stained My Tub Surround - Almost a Miracle It's White Again!

Updated on November 20, 2017

Rust Remover

Nothing has worked in the past fifteen years. I have tried many different types of products. Bar Keepers Friend. Wink, Lime Away Rust Remover. Many of the products caused my lungs to feel very injured.

Well. The other day, I was reading about metals and how to remove the rust from them, when I happened to see a video about vinegar.

Yes. Vinegar. Vinegar actually was used to remove some rust from a metal sign that they were stressed that the rust was taking over. It occurred to me that I should give vinegar a try on my tub surround.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Plus Vinegar Did the Trick

I had one Magic Eraser left in the box, and a half gallon jug of white vinegar. I thought, well, why not give it another shot.

So, I filled a Red Solo Cup with vinegar, dipped my Magic Eraser into the vinegar an started swishing the Magic Eraser across the tub surround.

In the first few minutes, nothing seemed to be happening. I was standing in the tub with tennis shoes on, and, all of a sudden I noticed that there was little splashes of orange water running down the wall.

What??? I put some more vinegar on the Magic Eraser and started rubbing some more. White. A little more scrubbing, and more white.

I didn't believe my eyes for a second. But, no, here it was happening. The rust was being completely removed from the tub surround. I used a microfiber washcloth with vinegar, and there was no reaction. So, back to the Magic Eraser, and more white appeared.

I did use the microfiber washcloth to wipe the excess rust drips off the wall. So, I'd alternate. Wipe with vinegar and Magic Eraser, and then, wipe with microfiber cloth.

Now, I need to go to the store and purchase another bunch of pads and some more vinegar.

I'm going to try to get the tub clean now. Wish me luck!

I went to town and bought more vinegar and four more pads. I got most of the rust off my tub, now. I need a few more pads to complete the task. It may happen yet today, or it may wait for another day. LOTS of elbow grease, but how cool I can see the white of my tub and tub surround once again. Thanks for your comment, poetryman6969.
