Home Decor: Funny and Functional

Updated on September 19, 2013

In bygone times, the average homeowner often chooses function over fun in the items selected for a room. Bookshelves were used for books only. Staircases were merely the means by which one moved from one level of a home to the next; bathrooms had a specific purpose, and floor coverings were there to protect the floor beneath and perhaps the feet of those who carefully walked on it. However, the design elements we use in our homes are no longer required to functional only.

Today we use the walls, floors, staircases and a myriad of other elements of design as canvases on which to express our beliefs, personality and humor. As a result, funny home décor is becoming more and more common. No more are our shelves made only of planks of wood and stained in traditional colors, today shelves can be basic or add to the fun, yet funny home décor, such the ones shown here. Who would have thought cutting tables in half, painting them purple and mounting them to each other would be the answer to shelving!

Or perhaps, you are looking for a unique way to show off your love for all things Western, but you don’t want the traditional cowhide and leather. Then consider the delightful yet funny home décor items to liven up your space

Do you like to surprise your guests by taking the mundane and making marvelous? Then what about an aquarium in the bathroom? Yep, definitely a situation of function meeting fun!

Oh, and staircases. No more are straightforward stairways with basic carpet runners the norm. Take a trip on the rainbow as you circle this colorful architecture that brings whimsy into the home.

And one must ask the question, “Where should we plug in our multitude of electronic items or be sure we have enough lighting?” Why with fun home décor elements such as these outlet covers and lights!

Home decorating trends may come and go, but humor is timeless. Yes, the jokes might change, but those people who love to tweak the conventional approach to life will always find ways to do so. As a result, funny home décor is something that is sure to last –especially for those daring home decorators who aren’t afraid to break the mold and express themselves.

Fortunately, there are many vendors at craft fairs, art studios and around the Web to keep us inspired with their own twist on functional and funny home décor. One such vendor is Davlin Woods, of Minnesota. From the unique to the everyday, you are sure to find That Piece that lets you convey who you are and what you think.
