Home Decorating Doesn't Have to be Expensive

Updated on October 26, 2011

Cheap Decorations for Your House

Even with a limited budget, it's possible to give your home a decorating makeover that will change the whole atmosphere in a positive and exciting way. It may take some extra creativity to decorate cheaply, but when you put your mind to it, great ideas aren't hard to come by. There are actually quite a few ways to redecorate your home inexpensively, so let's explore a few of them to help get you motivated.

Hangings on the Wall

One of the key factors of a room's look are the objects or decorative items hanging on the walls. Some people are art lovers and like to have original paintings hanging everywhere, while others prefer tapestries or other wall hangings. Your imagination is the only limiting factor when it comes to what you put on your walls.

You may not be able to afford to put up famous paintings in your home, but you could find nicely done reproductions that could add quite a bit of color and style to any room. Other possibilities for decorating the walls include wall mirrors, colorful tapestries and posters related to your favorite hobby. Check online (or local) auctions, yard sales and department stores for ideas for wall decorations.

Decorative Folding Screen

Aside from dividing a room into two parts, a decorative folding screen can be an attractive object in itself. It can often be advantageous to separate a room into two parts, as you can then have a new area for your computer, to write or study in or any purpose you want.

You don't have to keep the folding screen in the same position all the time; perhaps when you're having a gathering, you may want to open the room up to its full size. Whether you want a folding screen in a modern, Oriental, French or Persian style (to name a few), you can find one that's not too expensive.

Window Treatments

How your windows are decorated has a significant impact on the appearance of any room. Windows are related to the lighting, temperature and amount of privacy you experience, not to mention the appearance of your curtains, French door blinds, or other decorative coverings. Not only should you have window coverings that flatter the room, but you should always make sure they're in the most advantageous position. Blinds and curtains should be opened to allow enough light to get in, while at the same time preventing annoying glare.

There's no need to spend a lot of money on items like curtains or drapes, as you can find very attractive ones at low prices. Look for sales on curtains both online and in your area, or you could even get really creative and make your own.

Switch and Rearrange

Lastly, huge expense and difficult projects is not what it takes to make your home beautiful. Changing your furniture around and throwing things away can make a vast improvement.

Don't restrict yourself by just rearranging the furniture sets in the same room. Think outside the box, or room in this case. Moving the old dining chairs to the living areas may give them new life and spark off a talking point. Shifting the settee from the living room into the bedroom could totally change the mood.

See how you can reuse the things before throwing them away and you'll save money. Best still, hold a junk sale and you might even raise some funds to put into your home improvement project.

Creativity Saves Money

Put on your thinking cap to churn out creative home decorating ideas. You don't have to spend tons to give your house a whole new look. Small changes here and there could just as easily generate a fresh ambiance. You simply need to stay mindful of different ways to improve your home decorating.
