Home Remodeling Improvement Idea - Alcoves
It used to be alcoves were reserved for the formal part of our homes, the dining room. No more! Alcoves can be used successfully in many different areas and ways.
An alcove is a recess in a wall or a garden. In the European castles, I recently learned, beds were placed strategically in an alcove principally for warmth (although I think they look completely charming). Many bathrooms have an alcove tub here in America. The new posh design trend is a free-standing tub but of course, that a free-standing tub is one of life's little luxuries because of the space that must be allocated.
Journey with me as we explore many favorites for the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and even a couple of ideas for the bedroom.
From kitchen niches to recessed openings for the bedroom or living room, the architecture of every home is enhanced by simply changing the depth of the wall. From the simple plaster recess to the formal recess complete with complicated moldings complete with lighting, the home décor can be dramatically changed.
An alcove is a recess portion of the wall. It could be part of the bathroom tile in the shower area, part of the backsplash of the kitchen stove, or simply down a corridor or hallway in a room. For a bedroom, consider the drama of recessing the area around the bed and adding down lighting. From modern to ultra classic, there is an alcove sure to please anyone.

Recessed Light in An Alcove
To complete the artisan look of an alcove, to me, there is nothing better than a recessed LED ceiling spotlight. The joy of this is simple, it takes up no floor space, can lighten up a dark corner, a hall, or transition space for a little bit of effort and money. The alcove with the ceiling spotlight packs a great deal of character and charm into a small space.

Favorite Room for Adding an Alcove?
Adding an alcove to your home remodeling project does involve a little more time but the benefits will stay with your home for years to come.
An alcove is a decorative item similar to the kitchen canister set - it helps organize, store and display and yet it offers a texture and color that adds interest and drama to most any room.
Of all the alcoves, my personal favorite is the one for the kitchen that adds depth above the kitchen sink along with much needed space and even mimics the open cabinet to the left that houses the cook books.
Whatever your choice, an alcove is a great detail that can complement any décor.
