Home Remodeling Improvement Ideas - Drapery for French Doors and Windows

Updated on January 19, 2012

Draperies for large windows can be daunting.  Not just in price but also in function.  Take for example the french doors which happen to be one of my favorite interior and exterior design elements and yet window coverings that are functional may sometimes conflict with both your design preferences and functional needs for that doorway.

Here are a few solutions to that problem.  Browse through over a dozen options including a solution for wood shutter for the french door.

Be sure to stay to the end and see my favorite room with a wall windows and a single french door.  Share with us your opinion on what works and doesn't work for draping a large window especially the troublesome yet always elegant french door.

The room to the right is reminiscent to me of my Grandmother's home. When dry cleaning her draperies, she would complain about the cost, the very astute reply by the young man rehanging the newly cleaned draperies was - well most people do not drape their entire wall. This photo reminds me of her draperies where they extended from wall to wall - no room for paintings but a soft wall of fabric - making a dramatic statement in not one room but every room of my Grandmother's home!

The room above was quite a surprise to me.  I would not have thought the french door would present itself so well without any drapery covering what so ever.  Add to the fact that the sidelight window is partially covered.  And yet, the room works exceptionally well in every detail.

This goes to show us that french doors, large windows can break all the rules and still showcase an elegant well designed room.

Shutters for French Doors

Considering shutters but concerned about function - worry no longer.  Your solution is clearly presented to the right.  You see, the shutter company has thought of everything.  Yes, you can have shutters on your french doors and yes, the door will still completely function.  The wood has been carefully crafted to smoothly transition from louver to lever - making the door fully functional and the shutter fully operational too!

Famous Quotes on Windows

Thank you for sharing my drapery ideas and favorite rooms with large windows and french doors.  Here are some famous quotes on window that I have always loved:

"Friends are like windows through which you see out into the world and back into yourself... If you don't have friends you see much less than you otherwise might.”

Merle Shain quotes

“People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.”

Elisabeth Kubler-Ross quotes (Swiss-American psychiatrist and author )

“The windows of my soul are made of one-way glass, don't bother looking into my eyes if there's something you want to know, just ask”

Ani Difranco quotes (American Singer, Song Writer and Guitarist. b.1970)

“A house without books is like a room without windows. No man has a right to bring up his children without surrounding them with books, if he has the means to buy them.”

Horace Mann quotes (US educator, the first great American advocate of public education, 1796-1859)

      dusy7969,

      One of the homes my husband and I toured had multiple sets of french doors on the interior which spurred my curiosity.

      Dave Framer,

      You and your family make a great team and that is what it is all about! I bet the double french doors are even worse. I couldn't figure out why the french doors in that home we saw were so different - they had two sets of doors linked together - making the rooms even brighter than a single french door. I learn something new every day. What a nightmare that doorway header must me!

      Being a framer I hated installing French Doors, but personally when I remodeled my home I love them and added as many as I could, as well as many large bay windows.Like you stated window treatments were a bit of a problem , thanks to my mother and aunt being curtain designers and makers they pulled everything together and gave me and my remodeled home something to be proud of.

      @ImChemist,

      My husband and I have been house shopping and one of the homes was filled with french doors which caused me to search on the internet. I love large windows, adore french doors so it was a fun Hub to put together. So glad you enjoyed it too!

      @DeBorrah K. Ogans,

      You are right - the french doors are classic. The credit for the photos goes to the interior designers who knew how to manage a room. Their craft always thrills and inspires me - I have no imagination in this area but enjoy the variety of the craft.

      The pictures are beautiful and appear to be one of a kind. Drapes are still in and give an feeling of elegance that is beyond belief. Your collection is not seen very often and they are beautiful.
