A cozy fireplace with wall to ceiling stone combined with wood beams creates the centerpiece for this Midwestern home.

The cathedral ceilings combined with wood beams make a dramatic statement for this grand family room.

This room is further enhanced by the exquisite carpet and almost white chairs and couches. This family room beckons for friends and family to retreat for a long and comfortable conversation.

Notched and Slotted Beams with Mitered Joints

The notched and slotted beam with the mitered joints are an architectural gem.

Secured with ebony pegs, this Craftsman architecture is from The Lodge at Torry Pines, northern San Diego County, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

This resort offers the preservation of fine craftsmanship and also is the home to some of the rarest native pine trees in the United States. The quality of the wood along with the craftsmanship on these wood beams are simply spectacular.

Author's Great Room Ceiling - Redwood with Wooden Beams

Why do I love wooden ceilings? Because our Wisconsin home has redwood with large rustic beams (shown below in the next photo). The combination with the fireplace (crafted of Wisconsin flagstone but of course!) lends a feeling some might attribute to the Frank Lloyd Wright style called Praire Style. For me, it simply means the room is a gathering place for our family. The wood makes the room feel more attuned to nature.

While typically a wood beam is seen in the family room, the billiard room is also ideal. The contrast of a jukebox in the corner is an interesting juxtaposition against the triple play of wood in the room.

Triple Play of Wood in the Billiard Room

Often in the world of fashion and design the play of a theme of "three" lends a sense of refinement and/or confidence to a dress or an outfit. The world of fashion is very particular.  So too, in interior design.  The coffered ceiling and the wood beams compliment well the wood of the billiard table and the triple play is completed with the wood blinds over the double hung windows accented by wood mullions.

The triple play of decorating with wood in this billiard room is complete with:

Rustic Room with Rustic Floor and Rustic Beams Too

This room is centered around a bay created with a vaulted ceiling and wood beams. The windows have the added architectural interest of the mullions and notice how the wood on the windows is different from the floor and the ceiling beams. The woods compliment each other beautifully. The window woodwork very smooth and formal and the flooring and ceiling beams rough hewed and rustic.

The Glazed Wood Beams and Panels

Restoring life to old beams is often accomplished with a glazed stain. This room to the right benefited form the sanding and glazing, showcasing once again the fine grain and beauty of the natural woodwork on the ceiling beams and grooved wood panels.

The Light Wood Beams

The light wood beams showcase yet another color variation. All of the stains detail the wood grain. The height of the ceiling, the over sized french doors detail the room could handle the dark woodwork but yet look how inviting the light wood stain is even in this immense room. The oversized windows/doors let the light in and the wood readily welcomes the brightness.

Installing suspended Faux Wood Beams

The rustic wood beams are not reserved solely for rustic rooms, family room or billiard rooms. Look how this modern kitchen is transformed to a new level of comfort with the rough wood ceiling beams. A great compliment to the natural color tile underfoot.

Suspended Wood Beam Installation

Suspended wood beam installation demands new skills. Check out the helpful video to the right for great tips on this special wood beam installation.

Painted White Wood Beams

Another charming option for wood beams is white paint. Painted wood is often hated by many naturalists, however, it does have it time and place. Remember this is your space - choose your personal delight. Do consider the resale value - this is not the current decorating trend. My rule is always to have the home ready to sell IF needed. No major changes that cannot be completed in one day. This means keeping up with maintenance making sure decorating is kept "marketable". This does not rule out painted wood or one small wall in your favorite color - just something to consider in your decision-making process.

Beams Are Back - Jill Denton

Jill Denton shared with us this room. The two walls of stone, the recessed wood wall with recessed lighting and the wood beams above give the room an inviting design. Jill detailed in 2008 that "beams are back!". I grew up with beams from our family home in the 70's. I still believe you love and always return to what you grew up with. For me, we had beams in the family room. Did they ever really go of style? Does a classic architectural element ever fade into the days of yesterday and old glory. Or are classics always a part of our very fabric?

To quote Jill Denton again:

"The beam is there to stay, it’s not going anywhere. Everyone knows it’s there so don’t fight it … make it the best it can be … love it!"

Commodore Condominium Wood Beams

"In 1928, the Biltmore Development Company hired Louisville's prestigious architectural firm, Joseph & Joseph, to design The Commodore Apartment Building on the corner of Bonnycastle and Cowling Avenues. Still active today, Joseph & Joseph also designed many other significant buildings throughout Louisville, including Willow Terrace (1924) and The Dartmouth (1928). Located in the historic Bonnycastle Neighborhood at the edge of Cherokee Park which was designed by the father of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmstead.

The interior lobby mirrors the aesthetic of the exterior, with adornments that include textured stuccoed walls, coffered ceilings, an elaborate fireplace surround, decorative wrought-iron, and exposed wooden beams painted with classical motifs.

Commodore was designed and constructed to be the premiere apartment building in Louisville. Surviving the economic downturn of The Great Depression and WWII, it continued as luxury apartments until 1978, when it was bought for $650,000 and restored for another $125,000 by actor, entrepreneur and Louisville native Roger Davis..

Now known as The Commodore Condominium, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The Commodore’s residents are currently involved with numerous aesthetic restorations and mechanical updates necessary to maintain its integrity and beauty for subsequent generations."

Beam Wraps

"Beam wraps provide a decorative solution for covering structural components such as steel, concrete or factory made micro-lam beams. Wraps can provide a more natural, rustic looking alternative to sheet rocking or painting over these supports.

Beam wraps provide a decorative solution for covering structural components such as steel, concrete or factory made micro-lam beams. Wraps can provide a more natural, rustic beam look which is a great alternative to sheet rocking or painting over these supports.

Beam wraps are wood planks fastened around these support components to simulate the look of a real beam. The finish can vary from a simple “boxed beam” to a more realistic look by using the old faces or “skins” from four sides of an antique rough sawn or hand hewn wood beam. If installed correctly, these “old face” planks produce a nearly seamless fit and an authentic look and are hard to distinguish from a solid beam.

Hey GmaGoldie, really enjoed your site about wood beams,my company used to do a lot of wood beam configurations as we concentrated on high end homes,I especially liked the coffered with 5 piece crown and the vaulted ceiling with tongue and groove ceilings.

      Dave Framer,

I normally have favorites (although I advise my clients no favorite muscles and no favorite children) but I don't here - love and appreciate all of these. I can see your love of the coffered with the 5 piece crown - if money and time and size of the room were not an issue - I would have to agree with you!

Thank you so much for stopping by.

One of the problem using these wood beam in outdoor is they tends to grow fungus and produce the funny smell. I am not sure the wood beam is treated with pesticide or not, if it is not, then it makes a good place to attract terminates.

      Gary,

I just purchased a home that has beams (inside and out) from 1962 and are in perfect condition.

Outdoors the stain and maintenance is critical - you are right. Water can be very harmful.

Ceiling beams add so much to a room, we put them all over our house. We purchased faux wood beams from a company in California (they have a place in Texas too) who had several different faux beam textures. They all looked so real! They were a piece of cake to install, we highly recommend them to everyone who will listen http://www.owtraditions.com

We are adding a wood vaulted ceiling to our kitchen. The beams I hope will match the great room. Great information about your beams - the more knowledge and experiences shared helps all of us.

Those beans are exquisite. I love the rustic wood with the white colonial look - that is what we have in our family room and that is the main reason why we purchased this house.

What is it about California? You guys get it right with that refined rustic elegance.

Beautiful - thank you for sharing.
