How to Enjoy Cleaning Your Room

I don't think I know a single person who enjoys cleaning. There may be a few in the world, but I suspect they are few and far between. So, if you don't enjoy cleaning, how do you motivate yourself to clean your room? What can you do to make it more fun and not such a chore?

How to Get Motivated

Getting motivated to start cleaning is half the battle, and we often think it will be worse than it is. Motivation is half the battle!

The best way to get motivated is to make the process fun. That may seem difficult, but it's actually quite easy to do! Here are some tips:

  • Get a buddy! Find someone to help you stay motivated. This can be someone who actually helps you clean your room, or it can be someone that you tell about your plan. If you choose the second option, have them check in on you occasionally to make sure you meet your goal. This will hold you accountable.
  • Turn on some music that you love and play it loud while you are cleaning. It doesn't matter what kind of music, just as long as you enjoy it. Dancing while cleaning is optional!
  • Reward yourself when it's done. If you know you are working toward a reward, you are more likely to stay motivated.

Best Cleaning Products

Cleaning your room can be very stressful, but it doesn't have to be! Using the right cleaning products can make it so much easier and faster. Here are some products that will cut down on the elbow grease.

Spot Shot - I've sung the praises of this product before - it's the best I've ever seen for getting stains out of carpet and upholstery. Follow the directions and most stains come out in one application with little or no scrubbing!

Swiffer Dusters - EVERY room has dust...no matter how clean you try to keep it! The Swiffer Duster system makes it easy to go from dusting surfaces to picture frames to lamps, all with one tool. The duster traps dust, lint, and hair. Start at the door and move around the room and you'll be dust-free in no time!

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - These little miracles will remove scuff marks from floors, walls, and even furniture! It really works just like an eraser!

Febreze Fabric Refresher - When you are finished cleaning, give the entire room (carpets too!) a spray of Febreze. Your room will not only look clean, but it will smell clean and fresh too!

Cleaning Tips

As you clean your room, remember to pace yourself. If it's been a long time since you've cleaned, it may be overwhelming. Split up the task into smaller chunks so that it doesn't seem like such a big job. You can even create a schedule and give yourself a mini-reward after each part is done.

Finally, the best way to enjoy cleaning your room is to make it a small job each time. Schedule a nightly clean-up time of about five minutes (or the length of one song!) to straighten up and clean one thing in your room. Doing this every night will mean you won't need to spend a long time cleaning next time!

Cleaning can be fun!

Marcy - I'm with you on not enjoying cleaning (although I do enjoy the pride of a room AFTER it's cleaned)!. Using your friend in another state is a great idea! I'm sure you can motivate each other long distance. You could even trade before and after pics!

Well, I'm on a break from teaching, so I decided I need this hub! My best buddy for joining me is in another state, but I like your accountability trick - we can trade messages and it will keep me going. Cleaning isn't my favorite thing (show me someone who enjoys it, and I'll show you someone who needs therapy!). But I do agree you can make it fun if you approach it creatively!

Useful tips that I will try to filter into my children's heads through osmosis. Maybe smaller chunks are a good idea.

Passing your tips on to my daughter, aka the Swamp Dweller - anything that will help her tidy her room is welcome!

I agree with you; I'm not sure I know anyone who loves cleaning, and if I did, I would consider them suspect! Great hub, with very good tips!

Thanks, Nettlemere! I truly do believe that you can enjoy cleaning if you try to make it fun. I think the before and after pictures would be great - you'll really feel like you've accomplished something!

I like your optimistic title Amy! I wonder if I should take before and after pictures every time I clean, just to see if I've actually made a difference (or to prove I have if visitors think I haven't made an effort!)

Good hub. Thank you for not using the Barney clean up song. We sang that every time we had to clean up my daughter's room. I still know it by heart.
