How to Use/Refill Your Bath and Body Works Wallflower

Updated on January 2, 2013

Wallflowers

These little guys can be tricky if you have never changed one before because you have to turn them opposite of anything else! Instead of "Lefty-Loosey, Righty-Tighty" it's "Lefty-Tighter, Righty-Looser".

Why I'm An Expert

I was a part-time sales associate at Bath and Body Works. I was employed from September 2011 to November 2012. I have seen the trainings and I have spoken to customers about the products. Not only that, but I am also a customer and use Wallflowers in my home.

Tips and Tricks

Bath and Body Works in General

  1. Order online or wait for the semi-annual when Wallflowers are on sale for 50% or more off. If you can't wait, or want scents that are not on sale, the general price is $6.50 each or 6/$24 4/$20. This is nice because you can mix and match between Starters, refills, and even ScentPortables.
  2. Always take the survey on your receipt. The company actually listens- much of the changes made by the company come from these surveys! If you leave a voice mail, we get to listen to it, which really boosts morale in the store. Also, it gives you a $10 off your next $30 purchase coupon that never expires.
  3. Check if the day you're shopping is a coupon day. If they are giving out coupons, purchase something small like a PocketBac or a trial sized lotion. You can use that coupon the same day. Coupons are usually $10 off a $30 purchase or a free item with purchase. If you shop online ask for a free shipping coupon.

Wallflowers Specifically

  1. Don't be afraid to drop it- Those bulbs are made of thick glass. I drop them all the time and I haven't broken one yet!
  2. Is it working?- A trick I use is to plug it in under a mirror. If it's working, you'll see streaks of steam rising up your mirror. (This gets annoying to clean, though).
  3. Double Wallflowers- I tried mixing fragrances. Please don't make my mistake.
  4. Candles- They put candles of the same scent out as testers but the candles don't always smell the same as the Wallflower.

The scents are SO strong. I have a large home with very high ceilings and have to put the wallflower plugs in another room in the farthest plug. Otherwise my eyes will water and my nose will plug up. Is there any way to dilute the scent? Can I add more of the liquid that the scent is mixed in to the bulb? Really, I can't imagine having one of these in a small room. Please, I have about 20 that I've tried and all are too strong.

Sarah, sorry for the VERY late reply. As far as I know there is not a way to turn down the fragrance. The first couple of days it's pretty powerful, but it should taper off soon.

Morgan, I've never had this experience. I would go to the store and ask for a replacement.

Hello! You've answered a question about when the wick changes is color, that is normal. What about when the liquid changes color, though (bright blue to dark grayish green)?

Hello, can I turn down the strength of the fragrance? Looks like I can spin the back of it.... Not sure if I'm doing it right tho.

      Thanks!

You can clean them with like a wet wipe and wait a while to make sure it's dry. If the plug stops working take it back to the store. Also, they have an internal fuse protector thingy so if it isn't plugged into the wall all the way for some time, it will short out and you'll need a new one. This is for your protection but can be a bit annoying.

Do you need to clean these/ can you clean them. I find the plug stops working after a few months.

If you don't use a lot of it you might be able to take it back to the BBW store and either exchange it or get a gift card. Unfortunately over the last couple of years BBW's quality has been declining. Have you tried the double Wallflowers?

I have tried so many wallplugs, even hot wax,but never have I been satisfied with any of them until I went to my sisters house and the smell, fresh linen, smelled soooo good, she nothing else works but these, I went to bath and body and bought a few of the units and a few re-fills, surprisely they do not smell, very disappointed I have been on the website to see if I was doing something wrong, but I found out I wasn't,very disappointed.

Your video made my day because I had NO idea that Bath and Body Works basically does everything "backward" when it comes to twisting items on and off. I was getting so frustrated trying to twist a new Wallflowers plug into the holder! I was about ready to take everything back to the store. Thanks for the video!

It's just from the oil being saturated and is normal. You change them when they're empty. But if it starts smelling like it's burning you should take it out of the wall and let it cool down and/or exchange it at the store. :)

When is the proper time to change refills? Mine still has decent amount of oil but the wick is dark brown which seems weird.
