HowTo Summer Proof Your Home

Updated on April 1, 2011

Lighten and Brighten for Summer

Spring is fastly approaching, but summer will be here before you know it. Now is the time to begin the task of connecting to the rythms of nature and shift to a lighter home decor and atmosphere for the summer months.

The first thing I suggest you doing is to simplify the furnishings in your rooms; primarily the living, dining and master bedrooms. Get rid of excess clutter that has accumulated from Fall and Winter.

Store couch throws, extra pillows, fireplace tools, quilts and afghans until next winter.

Change your colors on items like vases, picture frames from hues like red, yellow, and orange to cooling ones like the blues, lavenders, green, and even white. What is really pretty is using pastel vases and putting freesia, ferns, or a fragrant rose in them. Another nice tip and nice touch is putting soft-hued towels and wash cloths in the bathroom.

Textures are also important when the season changes. The best suggestion is to go natural using breathable fabrics. Some ideas are all cotton throw rugs, a sofa draped in linen, and beds that are fitted with organic percale sheets,

Another important aspect of preparing for summer is to decreasing the summers heat and glare by shading windows in cool and natural materials. Using artificial lighting in a smart way by where it is placed can also be considered.

Last but not least, to stay eco-friendly, use nontoxic cleaning products made with citrus, baking soda, and oxygen bleach. Also to freshen-up sofas, linens, carpets, pillows, etc.; fill a spray bottle with water and add a few drops of rose, jasmine, or lavender essential oils for misting.

Thanks Cathy. Clutter does seem to bog one down. And that goes for mental clutter as well.

Summer will be here (thank goodness) before we know it - so today I started getting rid of the clutter, the extra books, clearing the closets and so on. I don't want anything that feels like winter.

      Thanks for this reminder!
