Garage ceilings below living areas can be a huge source of energy loss. The general construction of areas above garages is not conducive to allowing for energy efficient heating of the space. However, by using cellulose insulation and dense packing it between the floor joists, a fantastic thermal and sound barrier can be established. Cellulose has an R-value of R-3.8 per inch. One of the benefits of using cellulose is that when the material is compacted at a rate of 2.8 lbs/cubic foot, it cannot settle. Cellulose insulation is also much better at preventing sound transfer through walls and ceilings making this a perfect product for garages. As seen in the picture, the most popular method of installation is to apply a fabric to support the cellulose insulation. The fabric is stapled across the ceiling while being stretched to make the fabric as tight as possible and avoid drywall installations complications. This method can be used in new or existing homes to drastically increase energy efficiency. Cellulose is also 100% recycled material.
