Knowing the Key Factors of Interior Design

Updated on July 30, 2017

Interior designing is not as simple as what people think of, it is composed of different factors that can make or break the designing phase. We can consider interior designing as a collaboration of science and principles as it has rules that need to be followed in order to create a captivating and innovative result.

In this article, we will uncover the factors and provide a detailed explanation on how it can affect the result of your interior design.

Lining and Pattern

The line serves as a visual guide as it can form different shapes that create a sense of unity inside a room. By utilizing the essence of lining and strokes we can establish harmony and contrast of all the elements inside the room. Strokes and patterns on the other hand gives of a sense of continuity and transition of designs. Patterns can either be a repetitive lining on walls, furniture, accessories etc.

Straight and curve are two types of lines, but in order for us to elaborate, we need to categorize straight into two parts which are horizontal and vertical since they have different effects in interior design.

  • Horizontal lines

Furniture like tables, beds, and couches can be incorporated with the horizontal line as they all suggest a harmonious relationship with the earth. It offers a sense of tranquility and secure feeling.

  • Vertical lines

Vertical lines are great to convey the feeling of strength and stability as it can lift the eye, and mind upward giving off the heightened feeling.

  • Dynamic and Curve lines

Dynamic and curve lines are perfect when adding drama, style, and personal touch to the interior. Stairs, cabinets, art work, and rugs are the most common structures that adorn this type of line.

Shapes and Sizes

Lines give birth to shapes as it is the outline of any design whether it's two dimentional or a three dimentional object. Elements like texture, pattern, and colors can establish a harmonious relationship amongst any objects or design if used properly. Improving our knowledge in using shapes and sizes will enable us to work wonders in some spaces while making it more functional.

Room Space

Being an interior designer, it is a general knowledge to be aware of the length, width, and height of a room. The space is the foundation where we start building plans or layouts on where an object or furniture should be placed. Balance and collaboration of design should be the first thing in mind when filling up spaces with objects.

Lighting

Lighting is one of the most important factor in interior designing for it can be used as an enhancer. Without proper lighting, the texture, color, and pattern of the design will not be recognizable or visible. Lighting can either be natural or man made, either way, both are very useful in their own ways. For example; lot of natural light coming inside can make a room connected to outdoors thus making it look spacious. Man made light on the other hand can be used to highlight a space or an object for enhanced visuals. Both natural or artificial light are very useful in creating the right ambiance inside a room.

Color choices

It's very obvious that color choices is one of the key factors in creating a successful interior design, without it, anything will look bland and lifeless. Each color has a meaning and psychological benefits, so ensure to take advantage this knowledge to create the right ambiance in a room.
