Lights. Camera. Andheri!

Updated on July 22, 2017

Move along the stretch from Oshiwara to Lokhandwala Complex to the road down Yashraj Studios in Andheri, and you find the streets packed with Bollywood hopefuls. Young faces and lithe bodies all hope to get noticed by casting directors and agents, as they practice their makeup techniques, chat up producers and directors, and enrol in acting classes. It’s a strange part of the city, where hope hangs high in the air, but which is far removed from what Andheri actually represents as a suburb.

Historically, Andheri was an important port of trade. Versova, located off the mainland, was the site of many a fishing village, and it still has many fishermen colonies along the coast. Meanwhile, tiring of overcrowded South Mumbai, rich businessmen in the city started migrating Northwards. Andheri showed great promise for housing and commerce, so some of the earliest housing colonies started developing here.

It is not exactly known when the suburb started attracting new money and film strugglers in equal measure. However, Andheri is known for both today, and many film and TV personalities live in the Oshiwara, Andheri West station area and Lokhandwala Complex. Andheri East is still considered more of a business hub than a residential area, though this perception is also fast changing. Spurred by the growth of offices in Saki Naka and Marol, as well as the industrial SEEPZ region, many people have been looking for good quality flats in Andheri East. As a result, prime residential projects are creating some of the choicest flats in Andheri East for the tech, media and IT crowd.

Since a lot of wealthy folks live and work in Andheri, the suburb has always faced a demand for quality luxury housing. It’s one thing to want to live in a shiny, happening suburb – and quite another to buy a house that ticks all the boxes for the highest design and construction standards. The big challenge for developers here is to develop a peaceful oasis in the middle of noisy Andheri. However, reputed names in real estate are rising to the challenge and creating the most spectacular flats in Andheri East as well as the Western part of the suburb.

Apart from film studios, glitzy shopping malls and offices, Andheri also has a large sports complex, the best libraries and cafes, and some of the most high profile restaurants. When you live in Andheri, you get access to high living and luxury that you cannot get in most other parts of the city.
