Liquid Nails - How - When - Where - What + Concrete

Updated on October 16, 2010

LIQUID NAILS

The Selleys Company has many varieties of a product called Liquid Nails. Some of them are as follows.

1: HIGHSTRENGTH CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE

2: FAST HIGHSTRENGTH CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE

3: LANDSCAPE ADHESIVE

4: MIRROR-METAL-GLASS ADHESIVE

5: ULTIMATE STRENGTH PLATINUM ADHESIVE

6: BIG JOBS ALL FIX ADHESIVE

You have to attach a nozzle to them ( after slicing the top of the cartridge by a couple of millimetres) and you need to use a caulking gun to propel the product out of the tube.

As with most glues you have to make sure all surfaces are clean of oil, grease and dust before you apply the product.

All of the Selleys products are non drip, non sag and non stringing. This makes them extremely user friendly.

I have included some basic information on the abilities of each of these adhesives.

HighStrength Construction Adhesive

This one comes in a green 320g tube.

As per it's name it is an extremely strong durable construction adhesive suitable for all weather and on wet and dry timber.

This formulation is flexible when dry ( in most situations) so that the bond strength is maintained when there is movement. It obtains it's maximum strength after seven days of curing, but a usable strong bond is achieved after twenty-four hours.

It can be used in all weather and on wet or dry timber. An advantage of HighStrength is that it is a product that flows well in winter temperatures.

After applying the glue clamp items together. Don't remove the temporary clamps etc for at least 24 hours. You can adjust the position for up to 20 minutes.

Although not suitable for mirrors or styrene foam it can be used on most building substrates including:

  • Timber - Plasterboard - MDF - Particleboard - Masonry - Concrete - Tiles & Ceramics - Metals - Plastics - Rubber - Glass

Clean up is with mineral turps when wet, and when dry, scraping and sanding will tidy it up. It is also paint-able when dry.

This product is classified as hazardous and should be used in a well ventilated area. It is highly flammable and prolonged skin contact should be avoided.

Fast Highstrength Construction Adhesive

Available in a 420g yellow tube.

It is very easy to use. It is fast to 'grab' and has a low odour. Clean up is with water. It has the flexibility to withstand shrinkage and thermal movement. It is great for bridging and filling gaps too.

Because it is fast acting it minimises the length of time needed to support joins while it is curing. A good bond strength is achieved after 24 hours, but it will continue to cure for 2 - 3 days. Surfaces need to be bought together within the first 10 minutes.

This product will adhere to all the products as listed for HighStrength Liquid Nails as well as styrene foam.

  • Timber - Plasterboard - MDF - Particleboard - Masonry - Concrete - Tiles & Ceramics - Metals - Plastics - Rubber - Glass - Styrene foam

Clean up is with warm soapy water and it is paint-able when dry.

It is not waterproof but can be used in enclosed areas and is ideal for indoor jobs because of it's low odour.

Landscape Adhesive

This product is available in a terracotta and green 415g tube.

It creates a strong and lasting bond that is flexible and shock resistant. It is brilliant for strengthening and stabilising dry stone and masonry walls as well as being durable in all weather extremes.

This product is ideal for bonding pavers to concrete, bonding capstone to walls and repairing rockeries. It is great to use as a seal between pine logs to reduce soil loss, and to stabilise loose stone steps.

This product skins and begins to cure within 5 minutes so a bond needs to be made almost immediately before skinning begins. (Approximately 5 minutes). Full cure is normally achieved within 72 hours.

It is not suitable for permanent water immersion or for soft and crumbly materials. It can be used for the following:

  • Stone - concrete - Capstones - Terracotta - Timber

Clean up: Do not wipe away the excess 'squeeze out'. Wait until it dries and then trim it with a sharp knife. This product cannot be painted over when dry.

Avoid all skin contact. This product must be used in a well ventilated area and avoid breathing the vapours, because it releases methyl ethyl ketoxime while it is curing, which is extremely dangerous.

Mirror-Metal-Glass

It comes in a dark and pale green 310g tube.

This product provides a superior adhesion for fixing mirrors to walls. It is extremely high strength and will not discolour the mirror. While it is heat and steam resistant a strong vertical hold is still obtained. It is good for gap filling on uneven surfaces as well.

It creates a consistent strong bond on mirror, metal and glass materials.

The surface must be cleaned with turps prior to applying the adhesive and must be allowed to dry. Once the adhesive has been applied your item needs to be positioned within 5 minutes.

This adhesive requires air to cure so it is advisable to leave a 5cm gap from the edges of the item. Don't fill the gap on the edges for at least a week. This allows the air to circulate for curing. Long strips of adhesive, about 8cm apart , should be applied to back of the item for extra bonding.

You need to support the bond until the adhesive has cured. This takes approximately 72 hours.

It is not suitable for vinyl backed items or to glue items to a surface which has loose flaking paint.

Mirror-Metal-Glass Liquid Nails is ideal to glue, for example:

  • Mirrors to walls
  • Metal letterboxes to exterior walls
  • House numbers to exterior walls
  • Bathroom fixtures to tiles
  • Tool holders to metal shed walls

Clean up: When wet this product can be cleaned up with mineral turps. All 'squeeze out' can be removed with a knife when it has dried. This product can't be painted over.

It is advisable to allow adequate ventilation when using this product.

Ultimate Strength Platinum

This product is available in a 390g silver tube.

This is a polyurethane construction adhesive. It has excellent water, weather and heat resistance. It is ideal for interior and external applications and is useful for bonding multiple surfaces. Unmatched strength and durability is obtainable even on non porous surfaces.

Repositioning can occur for up to 20 minutes, and it obtains it maximum strength after 7 days of curing.

Of course it is not suitable for permanent water immersion and should not be used as the sole fixing agent for structural bonding.

Ultimate Strength Platinum is suitable for:

  • Timber - Plasterboard - MDF - Particleboard - Masonry - Concrete - Tiles - Metal - Plastics - Rubbers - Non-porous materials

Clean up: Acetone or mineral turps can be used and it is paint-able when dry.

This product is extremely hazardous and should only be used in a well ventilated area. Safety glasses and impervious gloves and clothing should be worn when using this product.

Big Jobs All Fix

This one is available in a 390g gold tube.

Big Jobs All Fix is a convenient, all rounder with advanced adhesive technology. It sticks just about anything to anything. Plus it is fast, strong and safe. You can reposition the items for 5 to 10 minutes and it cures in 24 hours, with further curing occurring for a couple of days.

It is handy to repair broken letterboxes, loose wall tiles, carpet tiles, skirting boards etc.

At least one surface must be porous and it is not suitable for wet or damp areas. The wet, damp or cold will increase drying time and you cannot apply it at temperatures below 10°C. If the adhesive forms a skin, no bond will form.

This product is not suitable to adhere mirrors, but it is ideal for:

  • Skirting boards - Architraves - Plasterboard - Carpets - Wood - Particleboard -Metal - Glass - Ceramic - Bricks - Concrete - Cork - Rigid plastics - Polystryrene foam

Clean up: The medium required for clean up is water, so this product is user friendly and it can be painted over when dry.

It is also very safe because of it's low fume factor.

Thank you. I actually enjoyed doing this one. My son once tried to glue his boots with it and when he put his foot in his sock stuck (forever) to the boot.

Liquid nails is great stuff! I once glued a board to a concrete floor, then several years later tried to remove it - it tore up the surface of the concrete when I finally got it off.

A well written and informative hub. Although I use liquid nails all the time, I had no idea there were so many varieties for so many things. Thanks!
