Tennessee-based freelance writer with a passion for true crime, a thirst for knowledge, and an obsession with lists.

In 2015, my husband and I purchased 20+ acres of farm land; a place we've hoped, worked, and saved for during all the years of our marriage. Now that we have the real estate, we're ready for phase two of our dream: a log home.

With only two children remaining at home and an empty nest just right around the corner, we've decided we don't wish to build an extravagant home with a lot of upkeep or one that pushes the limits of a retirement budget.. After hours of discussions, we've agreed to 1500-1700 square feet, three bedrooms, at least two baths, a loft, and a wrap around porch.

Searching log cabin house plans with these specifications can be difficult, tedious, time-consuming, and downright frustrating at times. Hopefully my endeavors will not go to waste and will make your search for the same much less frustrating and more enjoyable.

1. The Clearwater

The very popular 1,586 square foot Clearwater plan by Coventry Log Homes in Woodsville, New Hampshire.offers all the right amenities. A covered front porch provides additional outdoor living space while a sliding glass door off the dining/living area invites in the sun. The master suite is on the first floor with a walk-in closet as you enter the master bath plus two spacious bedrooms upstairs with a shared balcony loft.

This is the plan chosen by my husband and I. We added a $40,000 full basement to our plans, increasing our estimated cost to build to $230,000 for southeastern, rural middle Tennessee.

The Little Creek plan from Battle Creek Log Homes in Battle Creek, Tennessee is 1,650 square feet with a first floor master bedroom with a private porch. Two additional bedrooms and a 10 x 12 balcony loft completes the plans's second story.

My husband and I also gave serious consideration to this plan and requested a "rough" quote from our contractor. We were given a "rough" quote of $200,000 for purchasing the kit and turnkey completion. Again, this was for rural southeastern middle Tennessee.

The description for 1,601 square foot floor plan #456-3 at Houseplans.com is so beautifully described, it would be an injustice not to include it here:

This delightful cottage features rustic year round appeal. It features a unique blend of rustic informality with a dramatic interior. A charming covered front porch merges into wrap around porches that surround the spectacular great room on 3 sides.
