Why use an acid reflux wedge?

If you are dealing with heartburn you may have heard that you should try a bed wedge to get more comfortable sleep at night. Most doctors recommend a sleeping upright to their patients with acid reflux. The easiest and most comfortable way to do this is to use a mattress wedge for acid reflux.

What do wedge pillows do?

They are designed to keep your torso elevated so that stomach acid doesn't move into the esophagus, and burn the esophageal lining (which is the cause of the discomfort), while you sleep.

Now, you may be thinking, I can just pile up a bunch of regular pillows to do that! But here's why regular pillows don't work. Regular pillows lose their shape and firmness over time. Sleep wedge pillows for acid reflux are designed to maintain their shape and allow you proper sleep alignment.

The best thing about this treatment is that there are no negative side effects, only positive ones!

How to choose a good acid reflux wedge

  • Large wedges work best. Short wedges and pillows put more pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter which can make heartburn worse.
  • 6 to 8 inches. Doctors recommend an incline of 6 to 8 inches or 30 to 45 degrees. Look for a pillow that has at least 6 inches of height.
  • Length. The Mayo Clinic suggests that you elevate from the waist up. A longer bed wedge will work best for this.
