My 10 Favorite Uses For Dawn Dish Soap

Updated on October 16, 2014

Oh Dawn, how I love thee! Dawn is pretty amazing, at least in my opinion. You may only know Dawn as a dishwashing detergent, but did you know that there are so many other uses for it besides washing dishes? Even before I knew about all these other uses for it, I have always preferred to use Dawn to any other dish soap. I have always loved how they help save animals. Whenever there is a big oil spill, Dawn is the soap that is used to bathe animals that have been covered in oil from the spill. It effectively removes the grease from the animals and it is safe so it doesn't harm them. Isn't that awesome?

Dawn is really a miracle in a bottle in my opinion. It is a strong yet gentle soap that is tough on grease and grime. It does not contain any phosphates and is also biodegradable. I always use Dawn in my cleaning routine, and for other things as well. Since I love his product so much, I thought I would share with you my 10 favorite uses for Dawn dish soap.

1. Laundry Pre-Treater

Dawn is a lifesaver for my clothes. Whether I get food or makeup on my clothes, Dawn comes to the rescue. If you have oil, grease, makeup, or pretty much any stain on your clothing, pretreat it with Dawn. All you have you have to do is apply Dawn directly on the stain and rub the soap gently into the stain with you fingers, then wash as usual. Dawn has always worked for me to remove every stain I have encountered, it even works to help reduce the appearance of stains that are set-in.

2. Flea Killer

Instead of using expensive flea shampoo for your pets, use Dawn to bathe your pets. You can bathe both cats and dogs with Dawn. Dawn is 100% safe for your pets and it kills fleas on contact. It also leaves their fur very soft. I feel much safer using Dawn to bathe my pets than flea shampoo because flea shampoo smells so strong and I feel that it is just too harsh to use on my pets. Dawn works just as well as flea shampoo and I don't have to worry about any chemicals affecting my pets. It is also less expensive. From now on I will always use this to bathe my pets.

3. No More Ants!

Dawn is really great at getting rid of pests. Dawn works wonderfully for repelling ants. In a spray bottle place a couple drops of Dawn and the fill the rest of the spray bottle with water. Shake to mix well. Spray any surface where you see ants with this mixture, then wipe dry. The slight residue of Dawn repels the ants. If you see a trail of ants, you can also spray this directly on them as well. I don't know what it is but for some reason ants just really hate Dawn. Instead of using harsh bug sprays or chemicals, this is a safe and effective way to get rid of ants. This is safe for the entire household, including pets.

4. Get Rid Of Oily Skin

If you have oily skin like me, Dawn may be your new best friend. I never had oily skin until recently. I started to get really frustrated because no matter what type of facial cleanser I used, my face would still be oily and would break out a lot. When I first heard about using Dawn on my face I thought it was a crazy idea. I didn't think it would work. I thought it would dry my skin out and leave my skin feeling tight. Boy, was I wrong! When I finally tried Dawn on my face, I was so happy with the results. My face felt incredibly soft, and was not oily. Ever since then, Dawn is the only soap I use on my face. Since I started using Dawn on my face I don't break out as much, my skin isn't oily anymore, and my skin just looks better.

To help your oily skin, just use Dawn as you would any liquid facial cleanser. About a dime size dollop of soap combined with warm water will do. Then just rinse the soap off. Dawn will remove any excess oil from your face, and it will leave your skin feeling soft.

5. Pre-Manicure Soak

I love to paint my nails, and before I give myself a manicure I always do this. Before you apply your nail polish soak your fingertips in a solution of Dawn and water. Simply add a couple drops of Dawn to a large bowl and then fill the bowl up with water. Soak your fingertips for about 5 minutes. Doing this will make your cuticles soft and it will make it easier to push them back. This also removes any dirt and oil from your fingernails, which makes it easier for the nail polish to stick to your nails.

6. Remove Grease and Hair Product Build-Up

If you use a lot of hair products, use Dawn instead of your regular shampoo to remove hair product build-up. Just add a squeeze of Dawn to your hands and work it through your hair just as you do with your regular shampoo. Be sure to rinse well. This will remove any excess oil from your scalp and hair, and it will strip away any greasy product build-up from your hair without damaging it. Dawn is a much cheaper alternative to expensive salon brands that do the exact same thing. It really works just as well and it is way, way cheaper. However, I recommend not to do this more than once a month because it will strip the natural oils from your hair.

7. Makeup Brush Cleaner

In a small glass bowl combine a couple drops of Dawn and fill the bowl with water. Gently swirl your makeup brush in the soapy water. Massage the brush bristles with your fingertips, and then continue to swirl the brush until it appears that no more makeup is coming off the bristles. Then gently rinse the brush under cold water and make sure all the soap suds are gone. Squeeze out any excess water and reshape your brush bristles and lay the brush flat to dry on a towel.

8. Laundry Soap

If you ever run out of laundry soap, and you really need to wash something, grab that Dawn! I first tried this when I ran out of laundry soap and I needed to wash some clothes in a pinch. I figured, well it works great for dishes so it must be okay to use on clothes. It worked wonderfully and I couldn't even notice a difference. Fast forward a couple years later and I read online about using Dawn to wash your clothes. I still use this from time to time, even if I have laundry soap on hand. I have used this on my boyfriend's work clothes which get pretty dirty, and on my cat's blanket after a hairball incident. It cleaned them perfectly and left them smelling nice and fresh.

It is pretty simple to do this. Just place the dirty clothing into the washing machine as you normally would. Then add between 1-2 tablespoons of dish soap into the washer. I usually only use 1 tablespoon but if the load is very large or heavily soiled I use 2 or 3 tablespoons. Then choose your preferred settings on your washer and wash as you normally would. The end result will be clean and fresh clothes.

Some of you may be wondering if this bubbles up a lot in the washer and for me this has never happened and I have done this quite a few times. I do have a top-loading washing machine so I don't know how this would work in front loading washers or HE washers.

9. Awesome Multi-Purpose Cleaner

Dawn can be used to clean multiple surfaces in your home. It can be used on floors, countertops, windows, and much more. I love to use Dawn as my main multi-purpose cleaner because it is very inexpensive and it works just as effectively as any other household cleaning product. There are no toxic or harsh chemicals in Dawn so you don't have to worry about using it around your pets or children.

These are some of the many ways I like to use Dawn as a multi-purpose cleaner in my home.

  • Amazing Floor Cleaner- You can clean your floors just as effectively with Dawn as you would with any other floor cleaning product. Just add a few of drops of Dawn to a bucket of hot water and mop your floors. This cleaner works great on hardwood, laminate, tile, and even cement floors. There is no need to rinse your floors after using this. Simply mop and you are good to go.
  • Multi-Purpose Cleaner- To make an easy multi-purpose cleaner add a few drops of Dawn to a spray bottle and fill the spray bottle up with water, shake to mix well. This cleaner works well for pretty much everything. I have used it on windows, mirrors, kitchen/bathroom countertops, toilets, and faucet fixtures. All you need to do is just spray your surface of choice and wipe the dirt away.
  • Shower and Tub Cleaner- Dawn is favorite cleaning product for my shower. It works great at removing soap scum and it leaves my shower sparkly and clean. I simply just squeeze a few drops of Dawn onto my shower floor, walls, and doors. I let it sit for about five minutes and then I just scrub away with a sponge. When I am done scrubbing I rinse the shower well until all the soap suds are gone. Dawn works amazingly well at getting rid of all the gunk and soap scum from your shower and leaves it nice and clean.

10. Homemade Ice Pack

You can make your own homemade ice pack with Dawn. Fill a sandwich size Ziploc bag with Dawn, zip the bag up, and freeze it. Ta-da! Your now have your own homemade ice pack. The soap stays cold for a very long time compared to regular ice packs, and it can be reused as well.

I have only used the original blue Dawn dish soap for any of these uses. I'm not sure how any other dish soap would work in place of blue Dawn.

I hope you enjoyed reading about the many ways to use Dawn. Who knew there were so many different ways to use this dish soap.
