Organize Your Linen Closet

Updated on January 29, 2011

Organize your linen closet

There’s no need to wait for spring.  When it comes to cleaning and organizing your house, there’s no time like the present.  The January 2011 Good Housekeeping claims the average American spends 55 minutes a day looking for items s/he can’t find!  Claim some of that lost time by organizing your linen closet.

1.       Remove everything.
It’s much easier to work with a clean slate than to try to work around piles of stuff.

2.      Sort and organize.
Put like things with like, so all sheets in one area and towels in another.  This is a good time to get rid of things you don’t need, so if you have a set of sheets for a twin-sized bed, but no twin bed, it’s time for them to go!

3.      Create bags of sheet sets.
Take one pillow case from the set.  Neatly fold the two sheets (good luck with the fitted one!) and any other pillowcases and put them in the reserved pillowcase.  This keeps the whole set together and allows them to be neatly stacked.

4.   Roll Towels.
You can stick with the traditional folding of towels if you want, but rolling them helps them fit better in the closet, and it looks nicer, too!  Washcloths and smaller towels can be rolled, stacked, or stored in baskets.

5.   Gather containers for other items.
Some people have closets designated for just towels and sheets.  Others of us need to fit other items in there as well.  If you’re one of the latter, things will be much easier to find if you create separate bins for like groups.  For example, I have containers for hair products and separate containers for cold pills.
