Thanks Phil for your comment and your votes up. Building a small wall(height) around the trees and fill it with a soil mixture of peat moss, a little sand with lots of soil and mix this all together. Then put some flowering annual plants that love shade for color. But I would dig a hole, add fertilized water (miracle gro in water), and then the plant cover with soil. Once you have finished planting check the next day to see if your plant needs more water. Just remember, plants under trees will need more water.

I've got two mature red maple trees on my front lawn and not even the grass underneath is growing very well due to the lack of light it gets and likely that the trees are sucking up all of the water. Also, the earth is clay. Do you know if there is anything that can grow in these conditions? Great hub which has a large variety of part shade which I suspect is what many gardeners need, you get a vote-up and useful from me.
