Hawaiian lei flowers plumeria flowers also known as frangipani plant flowers are exotic Hawaiian tropical lei flowers that look very pretty and they come in a variety of beautiful colors.

Plumeria flowers are one of the most fragrant tropical Hawaiian lei flowers commonly found in Hawaiian islands and they are popularly used in Hawaiian leis which is a kind of necklace or garland made of exotic tropical flowers like plumeria flowers.

The one variety of plumeria flowers I have commonly seen are the white plumeria flowers with yellow color towards the center. Plumeria flowers are produced in a tree which usually flowers year round but most regularly during spring and fall seasons and produces large number of flowers. In fact the plumeria trees I have seen were usually full of flowers, with so many almost fresh flowers fallen down from the tree and spreading the fragrance all around.

Plumeria trees are also called frangipani or temple trees. They are native to South America, Mexico or Pacific Islands and are commonly grown in tropical regions all around the world.

Growing Plumeria - Frangipani Flower Plants

Plumeria trees grow very commonly in tropical and subtropical regions and they are especially popular in many South Asian and Southeast Asian countries and also in Hawaii. In countries with extreme cold or hot temperatures, the frangipani plants need to be grown in large pots so that they can be taken indoors during times of winter or during high temperatures in the summer.

Growing plumeria or frangipani plants in tropical regions is easy if you water them regularly till they are well rooted in soil. The plants need good exposure to sun and regular watering for maximum growth. However too much exposure to sun without enough water may cause the plants to dry off. It is also not advisable to plant them in soggy areas with too much water content since this can lead to the decay of the roots. For better results, always plant them in well drained soil.

Normally plumeria or frangipani trees grow large and may reach up to 30 feet if you plant them outside. However, if you want to grow them indoors you can choose shorter varieties of the plants and prune them occasionally to maintain the size. The plumeria plant stems grow thick and you can use the stem cuttings to propagate the plant.

Plumeria seeds are also available in the market, though it is not a very common practice to grow them from seeds. If you can find the plumeria seeds, you can germinate the seeds easily in a pot mix or directly in soil. However it is said that the plants grown from the seeds may differ from the parent plants in many characteristics including growth and flowering. Blooms may start appearing from the first year to the third year of planting depending on the variety. Spring is the best time to plant plumerias.

More About Plumeria Frangipani Flowers

There are many varieties of plumeria flowers, but the most common plumeria plants produce white, yellow, pink or red plumeria flowers. These plumeria or frangipani flowers are highly fragrant and usually doesn't fade easily. They make best cut flowers and you can place them in vases to decorate your home for their natural freshness, beauty and fragrance. The fragrance of plumerias is the highest during the nighttime.

Despite the high fragrance of plumeria flowers, they do not produce any nectar and so no honey is produced by the honey bees even though they visit the flowers due to their high fragrance.

Plumeria flowers have great cultural importance in many countries. They are used to decorate homes, and they are used to make garlands to be used by brides and for worship in many cultures.

Importance Of Plumeria Frangipani Flowers in Hawaiian Culture

Plumeria or frangipani flowers have great importance in the Hawaiian culture. These beautiful flowers were introduced to Hawaiian people during late 1800's from South America and Hawaiians started cultivating plumeria widely. The flowers were initially linked to the presence of ghosts and hence the trees were mostly planted in cemeteries. However, over years the plumeria flowers gained more popularity. People started to associate the flowers with new beginnings and started using them very commonly.

Leis or garlands made out of flowers are used in Hawaii to welcome visitors and also during celebrations, and plumeria flowers have now become an integral part of leis. They are also used for decorations and to make flower bouquets. Plumeria flowers are used very widely in Hawaii and can be considered as a symbol of the Hawaiian culture.

Plumeria flower fragrance is very addictive and it is very popularly used in perfumes, soaps and oils. You can probably find plumeria frangipani scent also in air fresheners, candles etc. It is the unique and natural fragrance of this flower that makes it so special. You can plant these in your own garden for the natural fragrance and freshness they provide to the surroundings and enjoy yourself!

Nice hub VioletteRose. I have seen frangipani (what a great name!) in S.E Asia and they are indeed a lovely plant. Once I tried growing one indoors here in England, but without success. I'll try again one day! Alun

We received our plumeria leis when we arrived in Hawaii. I found it interesting that they were originally planted in cemeteries there because they were originally associated with ghosts. Nice that the beliefs transitioned to the idea of new beginnings. Enjoyed your post. Will be pinning it to my plants board and will also give it a tweet and share.

Thanks for commenting Au fait! Plumeria flowers are very widely used to make Hawaiian leis, however they also use other flowers like orchids, tube roses, hibiscus etc.
